The glowing blue eyes remained fixed on me from the darkness ahead.
Every instinct told me to run.
My heart pounded so hard I could hear it echoing through the narrow tunnel beneath the palace. Behind me, the sounds of battle still raged above as Malakar and his Shadow Guard fought against the palace's ancient protectors.
Queen Elena's final words echoed in my mind.
Go... The fate of the kingdom depends on you.
I took a slow breath and forced myself to step forward.
The Moon Crown resting upon my head glowed softly, filling the tunnel with silver light. As its light spread, the darkness slowly retreated, revealing walls carved with ancient symbols unlike any I had seen before.
The growl came again.
Low.
Powerful.
Ancient.
It vibrated through the stone beneath my feet.
"Who's there?" I called, trying to sound bravier than I felt. Silence answered.
Then the shadows moved.
A massive wolf stepped into the light.
I froze. I saw him, he was so different from any wolf I had ever imagined. His silver-white fur shimmered like freshly fallen snow beneath the moon, while glowing blue markings covered his body from head to tail.
His eyes...
They were the same brilliant blue I had seen watching me from the darkness.
The wolf stopped only a few steps away.
Instead of attacking.. He lowered his head.
A deep voice echoed inside my mind.
"Welcome home, Queen Lyra."
I gasped.
"You... you're speaking?"
"Not with words."
His voice was calm and powerful.
"Our souls are connected through the Moon Crown."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"My name is Asterion," he continued. "I am the First Guardian of the Moon Kingdom."
"The First Guardian?"
He nodded.
"For centuries, I have protected the Heart of the Moon Kingdom while waiting for the rightful queen to return."
I swallowed.
"You've been here... all this time?"
"Time means little to those bound by ancient magic."
Before I could ask another question, the ground shook violently.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Asterion lifted his head.
"He's getting closer."
"Malakar?"
The great wolf nodded.
"The palace is weakening. Queen Elena cannot hold him back much longer."
Fear tightened around my heart.
"I have to help her."
His answer came without hesitation.
"If you return now, you will die."
I lowered my eyes.
"I can't just leave her."
Asterion walked closer until his enormous head was level with mine.
"Queen Elena already made her choice."
His voice softened.
"Now you must make yours."
I looked at the silver crown resting on my head.
"What am I supposed to do?"
The Guardian turned and began walking deeper into the tunnel.
"Follow me."
For a moment, I hesitated.
Then I followed.
The passage widened into a breathtaking underground corridor.
Thousands of glowing crystals covered the walls and ceiling, filling the cavern with gentle silver light.
Ancient murals stretched along both sides of the tunnel.
I slowed as I looked at them.
The first showed a magnificent kingdom beneath three full moons.
The second showed kings and queens wearing crowns identical to mine.
The third...
Made my heart stop.
A woman with long silver hair stood beside a smiling man dressed in royal armor.
Between them was a little girl.
She couldn't have been older than three.
The child wore a tiny silver crown.
I stepped closer.
"That's..."
Asterion stopped walking.
"Your parents."
My breath caught.
I reached toward the mural with trembling fingers.
"My mother..."
She looked exactly like the woman from my dreams.
Beautiful.
Kind.
Strong.
Beside her stood my father.
His arm rested protectively around them both.
"They looked so happy."
"They were."
"What happened?"
Asterion lowered his head.
"Betrayal."
The single word echoed through the tunnel like a curse.
I turned toward him.
"Tell me everything."
The Guardian's blue eyes filled with sorrow.
"Then prepare yourself, my Queen..."
"...because the truth will change everything."
Asterion's blue eyes remained fixed on the ancient mural.
"Your parents ruled during the final years of peace," he said quietly. "King Orion and Queen Selene were loved by every corner of the Moon Kingdom. They believed that strength existed to protect the weak, not to rule through fear."
I couldn't take my eyes off the painting.
"They look... happy."
"They were."
His voice carried a sadness that made my chest tighten.
"Until Malakar came."
The silver crystals around us dimmed.
Asterion continued walking, and I hurried after him.
"Malakar was once one of the kingdom's greatest generals. He was brave, brilliant, and fiercely loyal—or so everyone believed."
"What changed?"
"Ambition."
The word echoed through the cavern.
"He discovered an ancient source of forbidden power known as the Blood Flame. It promised immortality and unmatched strength, but its price was the soul of its bearer."
A chill ran through me.
"He accepted?"
The great wolf nodded.
"He believed no sacrifice was too great if it made him powerful enough to rule."
We reached the end of the corridor.
Before us stood an enormous chamber unlike anything I had ever seen.
At its center floated a magnificent crystal, suspended above a circular pool of shimmering silver water. The crystal pulsed gently, like the steady heartbeat of a living creature, sending waves of light across the chamber.
I couldn't look away.
"It's beautiful."
"This is the Heart of the Moon Kingdom," Asterion said. "Every blessing, every guardian, every shield protecting the Shadow Realm is sustained by its power."
As I stepped closer, the crystal glowed brighter.
Warmth spread through my body.
The silver markings on my wrists shimmered, and the Moon Crown felt lighter than ever before.
Then I heard it.
A heartbeat.
Slow.
Steady.
Ancient.
It wasn't the crystal's.
It was mine.
The rhythm matched perfectly.
Asterion smiled.
"It recognizes you."
I reached out cautiously.
The moment my fingertips touched the crystal, a brilliant flash of silver light engulfed the chamber.
Images flooded my mind.
I saw my mother standing before this very crystal, placing both hands against it as she smiled.
Behind her stood my father, holding a tiny child in his arms.
Me.
My mother kissed my forehead.
"One day," she whispered, "this kingdom will need you."
The vision changed.
Flames.
Screams.
The palace under attack.
Malakar cutting through the royal guards with his crimson sword.
My father fighting desperately to hold him back.
My mother clutching me tightly.
Tears streamed down her face as she placed the Moon Pendant around my tiny neck.
"Protect her," she begged someone I couldn't see.
A flash of silver light.
Then darkness.
The vision ended.
I stumbled backward, breathing heavily.
"They... they died protecting me."
"They gave everything so you could live," Asterion replied gently.
Tears rolled freely down my cheeks.
"I never even got to know them."
Before he could answer, the chamber shook violently.
A deafening explosion echoed through the tunnel behind us.
Cracks spread across the walls.
The silver water rippled wildly.
Asterion's ears flattened.
"He's here."
A cruel laugh echoed through the chamber.
"So this is where you've been hiding."
Dust filled the air as the massive entrance burst open.
Malakar stepped inside, his crimson cloak flowing behind him.
The Shadow Guard followed silently, forming a wall of black armor behind their master.
His golden eyes settled on the glowing crystal.
Then they shifted to me.
"There you are..."
He smiled.
"I've spent twenty-one years searching for the last Moon Princess."
He slowly lifted his blood-red sword.
"But now..."
Dark energy surged around the blade.
"...your story ends."
I stepped in front of the Heart of the Moon Kingdom.
My hands trembled.
But I didn't move aside.
"I won't let you touch it."
Malakar laughed.
"You still think this battle is about the kingdom?"
His smile faded.
"It never was."
He looked directly into my eyes.
"It has always been about you."
Before I could ask what he meant, he pointed his sword toward the Heart.
The crystal suddenly cracked.
A single line spread across its glowing surface.
Asterion let out a thunderous roar.
"No!"
The entire chamber shook as silver light and crimson darkness collided.
The Heart had begun to break.
Lyra's POV"Because the King is the prison.”The woman's voice echoed through the chamber.I couldn't move. She had Mother's face.Mother's eyes.Mother's voice. But she wasn't my mother.I knew that.I had to.“Who are you?” I whispered. The woman smiled.“That's the question you've been asking since the night you were born.”Kael stepped in front of me.“Stay away from her.”The woman looked at him.Something changed in her expression. Not fear.Recognition.“You.”Kael's jaw tightened.“You know me?”“I know what you carry.”Her eyes dropped to the black mark on his chest.“The blood of the first King.”Kael looked down at the mark.“I thought that bloodline was supposed to protect the Moon Kingdom.”“It was.”She took another step forward.“Until your ancestor chose the Moon Queen.”The First King. The story we'd already heard. But something about the woman's voice made it sound different.“He didn't just choose her,” she continued. “He chose to betray his own brother.”Kael frown
Lyra's POVThe hand around my ankle tightened.Cold.That was the first thing I felt. Not pain.Cold.It traveled through my skin and straight into my bones.I screamed and tried to pull away.“Lyra!”Kael grabbed my waist.Seraphine seized my hands.Together, they pulled. The hand didn't move.Instead, something beneath the floor pulled harder. My body slid across the stone.“Don't let go!” I cried.Kael wrapped both arms around me.“I won't!”The crack beneath us widened.Black mist poured from it.The dead warriors backed away.Even the First King stepped away from the opening. That frightened me more than anything else.“You know what's down there,” I said.He didn't answer.“Tell me!”His eyes remained fixed on the darkness.“You don't want to know.”The hand pulled again. My fingers slipped from Seraphine's.“Lyra!”I reached for her.Our fingertips touched. Then the floor beneath me collapsed.I fell.Kael caught my wrist. For one terrifying second, I hung over the darkness.Hi
Lyra's POVKael smiled. But I knew that smile. It wasn't his.I had seen Kael smile a hundred times. When he was teasing me.When he was trying to hide his worry. When he looked at me as if the rest of the world had disappeared. This smile held none of that.It was cold.Ancient.Hungry.I slowly stepped backward.“Kael?”His head tilted. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he laughed. The sound was low and unfamiliar.“You still call him that.”My heart stopped.“Who are you?”His black eyes remained fixed on mine.“You already know.”“No.”“Yes.”He took one step toward me.The dead army moved with him.Hundreds of swords lifted.Seraphine grabbed my wrist.“Lyra, don't.”I couldn't look away from Kael.“Give him back.”Kael's smile widened.“He isn't here.”My chest tightened.“That's a lie.”“Is it?”He touched the black mark on his chest.“He fought.”His voice changed. For one brief second, it sounded like Kael.“Lyra…”My breath caught. His eyes flickered silver.“Run.”
Lyra's POV"Bring me my daughters.”The words did not come from the creature’s mouth. They came from everywhere. From the stone beneath my feet. From the dead warriors kneeling before me.From the darkness beyond the ancient doorway.Even from inside my own chest.I couldn't breathe. My eyes remained fixed on the enormous shape beyond the gate.It had no true face.Only darkness. Two enormous wings stretched across the space behind it, disappearing into the blackness above. Hundreds of pale eyes opened along its body, blinking slowly as though they were waking after thousands of years. And yet, somehow, I knew it.Not its name. Not its history. But its presence. It felt terrifyingly familiar.“Lyra.”Seraphine's voice trembled beside me.I turned toward her.For the first time since I had met my twin, she looked afraid. Not angry. Not powerful.Afraid.“You feel it too,” I whispered. She nodded.“It knows us.”The First King laughed. The sound echoed through the dead army.“You finall
Lyra's POVNo one moved. Not the soldiers. Not the ancient woman. Not even Kael.Thousands of dead warriors stood behind the First King, their empty eyes fixed on me.Then, slowly, they lowered themselves to one knee.Every sword touched the ground. The sound traveled across the palace like thunder.I stared at them in disbelief.“Why are they kneeling to me?”The First King smiled.“Because they remember.”“Remember what?”“Who you were.”I shook my head.“I have never seen any of them.”“You haven't.”He stepped through the doorway.“But they have seen you.”The dead warriors raised their heads.A strange pressure filled the air. Then one of them spoke.“My Queen.”Another followed.“My Queen.”Then hundreds.Thousands.“My Queen.”Their voices merged into one enormous sound.I stepped backward.“I am not your queen.”The First King laughed.“You still believe that.”Kael moved beside me.His sword was raised, though his hand was shaking.“Stay away from her.”The First King looked
Lyra's POVI couldn't move.Kael stood before me.But the thing wearing his face wasn't Kael. Its silver hair was the same. Its body was the same.Even the tiny scar beneath his left eye was there. But his eyes…They were black.Completely black.“You're lying,” I whispered. The creature smiled.“I have no reason to.”I tightened my grip on the Blade of Dawn.“Give him back.”It tilted Kael's head.“He was never yours to begin with.”My heart cracked.“That isn't true.”“Isn't it?”It took one step toward me.“The man you love is only a vessel now.”“No.”“You can still save him.”My breath caught.“How?”The creature smiled.“Kill me.”I stared at it.“What?”“Kill this body.”My fingers tightened around the blade.“If you destroy me, Kael dies with me.”I lowered the weapon slightly.“You're bluffing.”“Am I?”It pressed one hand against its chest. The black mark beneath Kael's skin pulsed. His face suddenly twisted in pain.“Stop!”I rushed toward him.The creature grabbed my wrist
