Phoebe

Curled up in the corner of the library with a book on finance beside me on the desk, I look at the acceptance letter from the University of Ottawa that arrived in my email. I had been accepted into the Honours Bachelor of Commerce: Option in Business Technology Management Program with a full scholarship. Beta Lance pointed me in this direction a year ago when he realized my competence with computers and cybersecurity, stating the royal pack could use someone with my skill set.

I had been reluctant at first, not wanting to leave my post as the king’s hidden guard, but Lance reminded me that one day I would meet my mate, and if he wasn’t part of the royal pack, I had the option to follow my mate to his pack and start my life there as a mated woman. Because of this reminder, I reluctantly applied to different universities, hoping to join a course that specialized in training security specialists and IT.

“What are you looking at?” a deep baritone voice calls out, and I jump, slamming my laptop shut before facing the ebony-skinned beta who grins cheekily at me, his amber-colored eyes bright with amusement.

“No-nothing,” I stammer, hoping he has not seen the acceptance letter.

“Well, it looks to me like a reply from U of O,” he says in a singsong voice.

Cursing, I slide my laptop toward the burly beta and watch as he opens it to read the email. He lets out a low whistle, his eyes wide as he reads over the scholarship offered to me.

“Are you going to take it?” he asks, closing the device and sliding it back toward me.

“I don’t think so,” I admit with a sigh, looking down at the closed laptop.

“I am King Levi’s maid and hidden guard. I am needed here,” I continue, pursing my lips.

“You are an eighteen-year-old woman who needs a life,” Lance retorts, making me roll my eyes.

“Levi doesn’t need you here. He believes all those rumors just because you were in his room at the wrong time when he went into another rut. He thought you were trying to take the place of his true mate,” Lance scoffs.

“You and I both know I would gladly find his luna for him so that I can end these stupid rumors,” I counter, letting out an annoyed sigh. Those stupid rumors will be the death of me if the king doesn’t find his mate soon.

“Honestly, you should really start beating those wolves to a pulp for constantly spreading rumors about you,” Lance teases, nudging his shoulder against mine.

“You and I both know I can’t do that,” I point out, rolling my eyes before flipping my laptop open to check the stock market. Now that I am eighteen, I have access to the stocks left to me by my parents, and it is about time I sign into that account.

“The deal I made with the late king and queen was that I would pretend to be a weak omega so that I could watch King Levi from his side. If I suddenly attack every wolf who spreads rumors about me, the next rumor will be that I am a spy pretending to be weak in front of the king,” I add, smirking as I notice the numbers in my account. It seems my parents really set me up with a good nest egg in case something happens.

“The worst part about you saying this is Levi might use that new rumor as a way to kick you out of the royal pack,” Lance says with a deep rumble in his chest. I chuckle, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with this statement. King Levi hates me; that much is true. But at least I have Lance by my side as my ally and friend.

Lance, King Levi, and I grew up together. My parents were the royal guards disguised as a butler and a maid; Lance’s parents were the beta couple of the royal pack, helping to coordinate the safety of our pack and the royal family. King Levi was the prince and our dear friend at the time, but people change when faced with death.

When the rumors first started, King Levi stood up for me, stating I would never step over my station. But as they became more frequent, he soon stopped voicing his support for me. The only one who kept defending me was Lance.

“Don’t you have an envoy to greet in an hour?” I ask, glancing at the time on my laptop.

Lance lets out a curse and quickly stands from his seat. I chuckle at this, telling him to have fun with the Nightstone pack tonight. He flips me the finger, and I burst out laughing, feeling my friend’s annoyance. He hates playing diplomat, preferring to be in his office planning training formations and hunting parties to fill the freezers.

Shaking my head helplessly at my friend, I return my gaze to my laptop, only for something shiny to catch my eye. Curious, I pick up a small silver-colored box and sigh. A small note is taped to it in Lance’s messy handwriting: Happy Birthday, Phoebe.

With slight hesitation, I open the box to find a set of car keys nestled inside.

'You got me a freaking car?!' I nearly scream into the link between Lance and me.

'Yes. It’s in the garage waiting for you to take it for a test drive. Happy birthday, Phoebe', Lance replies with a smug tone. Before I can yell at him for wasting money, the link is shut down, and I growl. That idiot bought me a car and is blocking me from demanding he return it.

I know he will avoid me for the rest of the day, not wanting to face my lectures about wasting money. In the end, I can only accept my fate and take the gift. Tucking my laptop into its bag, I slip the finance book in with it and leave the library. Since I am the proud owner of a new car, I might as well see what Lance got me.

“Wonder where that gold-digging slut is heading now?” I hear as soon as I exit the library doors.

Suppressing a sigh, I ignore the glares thrown my way and lower my gaze. The rumors are still going strong, even on my birthday. My throat tightens with sadness. Everyone used to be so kind to me growing up. I was praised for being diligent and intelligent. Yet now I have to endure these rumors just to keep my status a secret to protect King Levi and lay down my life if it comes to that.

AvaFive Years Later“Julia! Johnny! Get back here!” I called after the twins in a desperate plea to contain them. They were two years old and full of energy, especially in wolf form like they were now. They ignored my pleas and kept running down the palace halls, yipping playfully at one another. When I found out I was pregnant with twins, my heart literally stopped for a moment. I remembered how hard it had been when Oliver was just a baby in the human world. Twins meant double the amount of work, double the late-night feedings, and double the diapers, too! But Leo had been overjoyed, and I realized it would be so much different this time around. I was a Queen, after all, and had an entourage of maids to help. So, my fears shifted to the same joy Leo felt. Twins were a blessing—it would be double the joy, double the kisses, and double the cuddles. We held a grand celebration when the twins were born to welcome them. We had one of each: a beautiful baby girl with dark hair and striki

Ava I woke up very early on the morning of the crowning. The first thing I did was reach for Leo, but he wasn’t there. The bedroom was strewn with girls, all sleeping in assorted places. I knew I was supposed to stay with the she-wolves until the ceremony, as was tradition, but I missed Leo. I decided to sneak away to go and see Leo before anyone else woke up. I tip-toed down the hallway. It was still so early that the palace hadn’t really woken up yet, so I managed to make it to Leo’s bedroom unseen. I opened the door and slyly crept across to his bed. He must have heard me, though, because he awoke with a start. “Ava?” he said, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. Then he glanced out the window. “It’s early. What are you doing here? Is something wrong?” I pressed my finger to my lips to tell him to hush. Then I undid the ribbon at the front of my nightgown and let it fall to the floor. I stood naked at the foot of the bed. Leo sat up even further, his eyes locked on my body. “You

Ava I was washing up in my bedroom after a long meeting with Queen Patricia. She had seemed impressed by how thorough I’d been, and that made me happy. After the meeting, she’d told me to go to my bedroom and wait for Cassie and the girls to come and get me. I honestly had no idea what this whole girls’ night thing was about, but whenever I tried to ask Queen Patricia, she just smiled demurely and told me that I’d find out. Thoughts of vapid bachelorette parties swirled through my head. Of course, I’d never actually been to a bachelorette party because I didn’t have any friends, so I was basing it all on what I’d seen in movies and on TV. I giggled to myself for a moment, wondering if werewolves had strippers, then reminded myself that whatever was in store for me that night was likely very different than any sort of human bachelorette party. It didn’t really matter to me either way—I was just so bloody happy to have friends in the first place. I didn’t know when they were comin

Leo Ava and I went back to the palace after our visit to Ocean Crest and announced that there would be a Luna crowning. The news was met with joyous cheers. And then the work began. I was determined to give Ava the biggest, best, grandest Luna crowning that anyone had ever seen. We set the date for a month from the day, which was a long time by werewolf standards for these sorts of things, but I wanted to give every pack ample time to make preparations to come. I wanted everyone there. I wanted everyone to see my beautiful, gorgeous Luna be crowned. The month flew by. Now that Ava and I were no longer weighed down by the heaviness of whether or not she was going to stay, we felt light as air. We spent almost every waking moment together—well, as much as we could. I still had to work, and Ava was knee-deep in her studies already. We’d flown in a training specialist from Europe to tutor Ava one-on-one, and she was engrossed in her studies. She often took her books to the dining roo

Leo I can’t believe I agreed to this. We were driving into Ocean Crest, and the scent of humans was so thick in the air that I wanted to roll up the windows to try to block it out—but then I’d be stuck with the smell of the car, which I wasn’t crazy about, either. Ava, however, was happier than a pig in shit as she ripped down the road in her new car. She went on and on about how much she’d missed driving, and about how nicely this “bad boy” cornered. I hadn’t wanted to come, of course. The last thing I ever wanted to do was make a trip into the human world. Just going to the market was enough to make me want to vomit, and that wasn’t even really close to any humans. But Ava had asked me to come and I couldn’t refuse her anything, so here we were. I had no idea why we were going back to Ocean Crest. Ava told me she had a surprise, but what surprise could there possibly be in the human world? Nothing I’d want, that was for sure. We drove down a long road and Ava pointed out the

Ava “No, I want bigger blankets,” I told one of the maids. “Fluffier ones. Softer. And more pillows.” “Yes, Miss Ava,” the maid said, then scurried away to fulfill my request. The maids and I were in one of the guest rooms, preparing it for Ana and Parker. I wanted to make sure it was perfect. I didn’t know what their life had been like while they were with their own pack, but I knew their life had been very hard since their exile, so I wanted to give them the royal treatment, so to speak. Ana and Parker were in the dining room eating. They’d both had a nice, hot bath and were given clothes to wear. I told them their room would be ready within the hour, which didn’t give us much time. I knew Leo wasn’t super happy about having Ana and Parker here, just as I knew the only reason he’d agreed to let them come was because of me—but it didn’t matter. All that mattered was that they were here now. When I’d gotten lost on my run and wandered into that little town, I knew as soon as I

Selene “How do you know my name?” I asked. The man who had just bought me was hauling me out of the whorehouse rather roughly. “We don’t have time,” he told me. “Hurry.” It all seemed a bit odd to me. I was bought and paid for, so I didn’t see what the rush was. He was manhandling me. I tripped

Selene It felt so good to hold my sword again. It had been too long. Granted, I’d been busy giving birth and looking after a newborn, but still. The weight of the hilt in my hand was like heaven. Avery was an exceptional Gamma, truly. She was brilliant at hand-on-hand combat, an art form not all
