Standing in the throne room, waiting for Lance to bring in the visiting Alpha Blake Stone and his family, I stare out the window in boredom. Fueled by the knowledge that my mate is in my pack, I spent all morning rushing to complete the paperwork and read the reports sent to me by the many alphas of the nation so I could track her down and show her off at tonight’s ball. Unfortunately, she managed to evade me time and time again.
Her scent had led me to the library when I finally got a chance to escape my work. It was strong in the back corner, and I even detected Lance there, but it seemed he only spent a brief moment talking to that she-wolf. When I linked Lance to ask why he was in the library, all he said was that he went to bring Phoebe her birthday gift and talked to a few wolves in the pack to ensure they were on their best behavior tonight.
I was furious to know he was still friends with Phoebe, and for some reason, I felt possessive at that moment. It took me a moment to clear my thoughts, as the idea of being possessive over that little gold digger almost made me laugh hysterically in front of the many wolves visiting the library.
After that, I followed the faint scent of vanilla custard to the garage, only to find that it led to a parking spot that now sat empty. Before I could ask who the car belonged to in hopes of finding my mate quickly, Lance linked me to say that the visiting alpha and his entourage would be arriving in thirty minutes, and I had to give up my search for my mate to freshen up.
“Your Majesty,” a guard named Adan calls out from the open door, catching my attention.
Straightening my posture, I turn to find a man who looks to be in his forties standing with an impeccably dressed woman and a she-wolf in a tight dress that hugs her curves. I frown , already sensing the scheming in that woman’s eyes as she scans me from head to toe. This must be Alpha Blake and his family.
“May I present Alpha Blake Stone, his luna, Hillary Stone, and his daughter Agatha Stone,” Adan proclaims, standing to the side. Alpha Blake and his family walk into the throne room, bowing as soon as they stand in front of the dais I occupy. I sniff the air, detecting nothing but the heavy scent of perfume, and my frown deepens.
“You may all rise,” I say, watching the three wolves stand straighter. I can feel Agatha’s stare; I sense the small amount of lust she has for me. She is not my mate, though, so I will do my best to stay away from this she-wolf.
“King Levi, it is an honor for us to be in your presence,” Alpha Blake greets, his voice filled with flattery. Lance stands just inside the doorway, rolling his eyes, and I know instantly that this is how Alpha Blake has been acting since arriving here ten minutes ago.
“I am happy to help one of my subjects in finding their mate,” I reply with a nod, looking back at Lance.
“As you can see, I am not your daughter’s mate, but perhaps one of my men might be. We will be hosting a ball tonight to welcome you and your packmates, and hopefully, she can find them either tonight or during your brief stay,” I continue in a dismissive tone. I notice Alpha Blake’s jaw clench, but he respectfully bows his head.
“Thank you, Your Majesty. We will be sure to make every moment of this opportunity count,” Alpha Blake says. With a wave of my hand, Lance steps forward, instructing Alpha Blake and his family to follow him to the guest wing. I know the wolves of Nightstone were already sent there while their alpha family greeted me. They will need to be on their best behavior now until the Nightstone wolves move on to the next pack in search of Agatha’s true mate.
“Should I order one of our spies to keep an eye on them?” Adan asks as soon as the Stones are gone and the doors to the throne room have closed.
“Yes,” I answer, my eyes narrowing as I turn to look out the window at the summer sky.
“I have a feeling Agatha might try something at the ball. She seems like a scheming bitch,” I continue.
Adan nods, his eyes glazing over momentarily before returning to normal.
“It’s done. I have Misa acting as the maid to that whelp,” Adan confirms.
I thank him, deciding I need to get some fresh air before the ball tonight, and I leave the throne room.
As soon as I am outside the palace, I shift into my gray wolf, my paws thudding across the stone floors that give way to the forest behind. I can still smell that sweet vanilla custard on the wind and feel the urge to hunt it down to learn who my mate is, but I know it will be just a wild-goose chase trying to find the owner of that scent if I go by the wind.
She had gone out in a car earlier today, and only the Goddess knows when she will return tonight. I remind myself that all of my packmates will be attending the ball. Maybe she went out to buy a gown for the occasion. If that is the case, I take a deep breath and comfort myself with the knowledge that I will find my mate tonight.
'The Nightstone wolves are in their rooms now', Lance links to me as I slow down my race through the trees, finding myself at a small bubbling brook.
'Good to know. Misa will be acting as their maid to see if they pose a threat,' I answer back, bending down to drink the cool water from the brook.
'I know. Adan informed me of this already, and I told Misa to report to me every night if she overhears anything.'
Satisfied that I have capable men, I turn around and meander my way back to the palace. The run had helped me clear my head, and now, I have to return to my duties as king. I need to get ready for the ball that will happen in two hours and go over the route I will take for the tour next month to check on all the packs under my command. Most importantly, I need to prepare for a coronation to crown my mate as luna queen as soon as possible.
Selene Letting Jax stay was the right thing to do. I knew Jack wasn’t overly thrilled with the idea, but I also knew Jax wasn’t a threat to the Silvermist Pack. I didn’t know how I felt about Jax. He’d hurt me so badly, but he was Hennessy’s father. Plus, I’d be Alpha Queen soon, so I figured there was no harm in letting him stay until he healed and having him meet Hennessy. We didn’t know where to put Jax during his stay. Silvermist wasn’t exactly equipped with many guest houses—or any, for that matter—so we decided to put him in the storage house, with a small makeshift bed. He needed to bathe, and I offered my house. I boiled pots of water to give him a hot bath, and he thanked me and went into my bathroom to undress. He left the door open a crack, and I couldn’t help but see the back of his naked body through the crack in the door as he undressed. My breath hitched in my throat at the sight of his muscular back. My mind flashed back to our many nights together in his bed. He
Selene Instantly, Jack shifted, too. Avery and I instinctively stepped backward. They were roughly the same size, both wolves muscular. They snapped their jaws at each other and started to circle one another. Storm let out a menacing roar, but I saw him limping slightly as he circled Jack’s wolf. That was odd—he must be hurt. Storm bared his claws. He pounced on Jack’s wolf and his claw connected with Jack’s shoulder, leaving four deep gashes. They instantly started oozing blood. Jack’s wolf didn’t even hesitate, though. He leaped through the air and sunk his teeth into Storm’s front leg. Storm tossed Jack’s wolf off him, causing Jack’s wolf to hurl through the air and land with a loud thud. Jack’s wolf got up. His gash was bleeding profusely now, as was Jax’s leg. Both wolves snarled, their eyes locked on one another. I stood frozen in place. Their power and alpha energy surged through the air, and the children let out a terrified gasp. Avery darted over and stood in front of th

Selene My heart stopped, and I stared in utter disbelief as I realized that it was, in fact, Jax. But how was that possible? How had he found the Silvermist Pack? No one knew they were still alive. It...it didn’t seem right. It had been almost a year since that painful day when he exiled me. Why was he here? I pulled back from Jack. “What’s wrong?” he asked, sensing my mood had shifted. I shook my head. “It’s Jax,” I said faintly. “What? Where?” he asked, whipping his head around in the direction I was looking. Jack knew all about Jax, as did Avery. I’d told them the whole story, from the Alpha Mate Reveal to the rejection. Jack had been angry when I recounted the public rejection and exile details. He’d said he hated him, full stop. It was different with Avery. I didn’t have my mom here at Silvermist, so she stepped in and took on a motherly role. I’d spent countless nights alone with Avery, crying, trying to work through all the pain that Jax had caused. She’d comforted me,
Jax A mix of emotions flooded through me as I watched Selene on the training ground. It had been a long, grueling hike for me, given my injury from that stupid fucking ritual. My parents tried to mindlink me several times, but I closed it. I didn’t give a flying fuck about anything they had to say at this point. I was pissed at both of them. When we got to the cave, the witch told me to walk through, and I’d find Silvermist on the other side, then left me there. Damn witches. I’d made my way through the cave, and sure enough, there was a pack on the other side. At first, I couldn’t believe it. It was true—the Silvermist Pack was alive and well. I’d followed the trail down into the pack. I’d expected to see a seedy pack with bars and chained-up whores, but it wasn’t anything like that. It was quaint, with cute little houses. I hid behind a tree so no one could see me. I knew nothing about this pack and wanted to keep a low profile until I did. I was an outsider, and who knew wh
Selene It felt so good to hold my sword again. It had been too long. Granted, I’d been busy giving birth and looking after a newborn, but still. The weight of the hilt in my hand was like heaven. Avery was an exceptional Gamma, truly. She was brilliant at hand-on-hand combat, an art form not all warriors practiced. Sure, we often fought in wolf form, and she had training exercises for that, too, but there were times when we couldn’t shift and had to fight in human form. Avery told me the ability to take down an enemy in human form is what separated the good warriors from the sub-par ones. I’d always been fascinated with warriors. Growing up in the slums, we didn’t see them often. We were forbidden from so much as even stepping foot on the warrior training grounds back at Crescent Moon, so the only time I’d ever seen warriors growing up was at official pack events or when they came through the slums to arrest someone—which wasn’t often since the rest of the pack didn’t really care
