“I have to say, I was expecting to see you much sooner than this,” Korinna admitted as she ushered us into the living room.

“Yes, well, that’s another long story,” I told her. “But I guess I should introduce you to…”

“Alpha Lucas,” Korinna interrupted, giving Lucas a hug as he followed us in. “And I believe this is Beta Jaden.”

“It’s an honor to meet you, ma’am,” Lucas greeted respectfully.

Korinna took Lucas’ hands, her expression serious as she spoke to him. “I owe you a huge debt for saving Sutton, young man. The Dawn Stalkers kept her well-hidden, even from me. I didn’t know she was their captive all those years.”

“I guess you aren’t as off the grid out here as we thought you’d be,” I said, curious about how she knew so much.

She looked back at me with a mischievous grin. “Let’s just say I’ve always had my ways,” she said with a wink.

“I certainly got the impression from Mom’s journal’s that you were always the one to go to for information,” Helene commented.

“Ah, yes, the good ol

“What…? No, that… that can’t be right,” Sutton protested. My heart dropped into my gut. To make accusation like that was a death sentence. To even suggest it to another member of the royal family was beyond treason. This wasn’t a foolish woman. Reading Leanetta’s journals told me enough to know that. If Korinna was going to make such an accusation, she had evidence. But what was worse… what had my stomach on the verge of revolt… was that it made sense. Maybe not to Sutton yet, but the pieces were starting to come together all too easily for me.“Honey,” Korinna continued, “I’m sorry, but it is.”“But… why?” Sutton asked.Korinna sighed. “Honestly, I don’t know,” she admitted. “At least, your mother and I could never really figure that out. All we knew was that he was behind your father’s assassination. And a lot of other things too.”“So, what are you saying…? That there’s some kind of conspiracy going on in the capital? That the king of Lycuria is just having people assassinated?”“H

Lucas was evasive about the phone call he took. I knew he spoke to Soloman, but all I could get out of him was that Osric was upset that I had left. That wasn’t anything new. That may have been all it was about, but Lucas was on edge about the call. More than I would have expected.Still, I wasn’t going to push him. I trusted Lucas. If he wasn’t telling me everything, it was for good reason. While I had a gut feeling that there was more to the call, he didn’t think there was anything I needed to worry about. We both had more pressing issues to worry about. The drive to the Red Moon territory didn’t take long. I chewed my lip as we drove down the coastal road. We were at the point where we were just guessing at where to go. I was starting to feel like this was just a foolish errand. I mean, how likely is it that we would even find anything? We didn’t even know if Korinna was still alive.Lucas reached over and squeezed my hand again.“We’ll find her, Sutton,” he said. “Your mother knew

Sutton would have been out the door hours ago had I let her. But I insisted she get some more sleep. We both needed it. Thankfully, she did fall back to sleep fairly quickly after she made me message Helene and Jaden to be ready to leave today. Now, she was in the living room, triple checking that all the journals were packed as we waited for Helene and Jaden to join us. Max was already here and pouring a cup of coffee.“There’s chatter throughout the country, Luke,” he said quietly. “You’re movements are going to be watched outside pack territory if you’re not careful.”“That’s not surprising,” I replied.“I spoke with Alpha Thane to get an idea of the heat you’re looking at,” he continued. “He suggested you fly into his territory then drive from there. He’s already sent a landing site at a private air strip near his northern border. He’ll provide you with a vehicle to go from there.”“What about Luna Kimo?” I asked. “Do you think we should attempt to reach out for diplomacy’s sake?”

I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. Lucas’ arm was wrapped tightly around my waist and it was still dark outside. Blinking my vision clear, I checked the clock. Five o’clock in the morning. I dropped my head back onto my pillow. Not ready to face the world yet. I sighed and snuggled in closer to Lucas as the phone stopped ringing.Until it started ringing again. With a groan, I reached over and grabbed my phone. I was ready to turn it off and go back to sleep but paused when I saw my grandfather’s contact flashing on the screen. I paused for a moment. Still wanting to just ignore it but think better of it in the end.“Grandfather,” I answered. “It’s really early. Is everything okay?”“That’s what I’m calling to ask you,” he replied sternly. “You leave the capital so suddenly? Without even saying goodbye.”I winced. I wasn’t exactly in any condition to tell anyone goodbye before Tarrah and I left. Even if I had been able to pull myself together, he was the last person I wanted

I tried to hide that fact that my hands were shaking as my thumb hovered over the call button on my phone. Max’s message had told me to go somewhere private to call him. If he didn’t want anyone around, this wasn’t good news. Hitting the button, the call started ringing.“Lucas…” Max answered, his tone somber. “We found Sera.”“Is she…?”“They dumped her body about twenty minutes outside the city,” he said. “We’ll bring her home. Then we’ll find out who did this, Lucas. I swear we’ll end them.”My heart was in my gut. My gut was in knots. Breathing was hard.“Just… just bring her home,” I told him, disconnecting the call.Sutton grabbed my arm. “Lucas… they found her? Is she okay?”I forced myself to look at Sutton. Knowing I would give everything away the moment our eyes met. The color drained from Sutton’s face as she gasped. Shaking her head as a sob escaped. I caught her she fell, both of us sinking to the floor as she cried. My own tears starting to fall whether I wanted them to
