Our lunch went longer than expected. When I finally made it back home, Lucas was out with Jack. Aunt Lara would be here in a couple of days but Lucas wanted to get Jack set up in some summer programs before she arrived. I still wasn’t sure how I felt about the situation. Jack emerged from his room a little before Lucas returned. He didn’t really say anything to me but he did eat the breakfast I offered him. I took that as a win. Once Lucas got home, he went to shower and get dressed for the day while Lucas told me about his conversation with Hunter this morning. I called Aunt Lara first thing the next morning. She was surprised to know that Daisy and Jack had come to the city at all but she happily agreed to come and spend a few weeks getting Jack situated. The only concern was when she could make it out. She would need to work things out with Uncle Rodney and even then, it may be a week before she could manage it. We hung up with the promise of her getting back to me by the evening.It was the first days of the summer break, so Jack was still asleep. Returning to the kitchen, Lucas took a seat on the barstool next to Jack. I hung back, leaning against the dining table so he didn’t feel crowded. I stood awkwardly at the kitchen counter as Jack fiddled with his soda can across from me. I’d tried asking him a few questions but he wasn’t talking. At least, he wasn’t talking to me. I could guess why.
