The smell of cheap rubber, lavender shampoo, and cheap dog kibble hit my sensitive snout like a physical wall.

"Stay close, Bear," Maya murmured, tugging lightly on the old fabric belt loop wrapped around my neck. "I know it’s crowded, but we need to get you proper gear."

I trotted beside her through the sliding doors of *Paws & Claws MegaPet*, suppressing the urge to sneer at the commercial madness surrounding us. I was an Alpha who commanded five territories, owned half the commercial real estate in the city, and answered to no living soul.

Now, I was forced to navigate aisle four while a manicured poodle in a jewel-encrusted sweater yapped hysterically at my ankles.

*I am going to snap that squeaky toy in half,* Fenris threatened, his ears pinned back in absolute disgust as he stared down the offending poodle.

*Control yourself,* I snapped mentally, glaring at the tiny dog until its eyes went wide and it scuttled backward into its owner’s tote bag. *We are playing the part.*

"Let's look at leashes first," Maya said, pulling me toward a wall covered in rainbow-colored nylon straps, harnesses, and metal chains.

She picked up a heavy-duty, fluorescent-pink leash with sparkly glitter woven into the fabric. A small matching collar featured a dangling charm shaped like a frosted donut.

"Oh, look at this one!" Maya gasped, her eyes lighting up with playful delight. She held the collar up to my thick black neck. "It matches the bakery colors! What do you think, Bear?"

My jaw went slack. *No. Absolutely, unequivocally no.*

*If you put a frosted donut collar on me, I am shifting right here and running into the forest,* Fenris growled, genuinely horrified. *Our pack enforcers will challenge us for leadership out of pure pity.*

I let out a low, mournful whine, taking two steps back and shaking my giant head in a firm, unmistakably human gesture of refusal.

Maya burst into a bright laugh, setting the donut collar down. "Okay, okay, no pink glitter. You're a serious boy, aren't you?"

She browsed further down the rack, finally selecting a sturdy, midnight-black tactical harness with heavy brass buckles. "How about this? You look like a secret agent."

I let out a soft huff of approval, stepping forward and lowering my head so she could slip the harness over my shoulders. As her warm hands buckled the straps tight around my broad chest, the mate bond zapped through my skin, making my tail give a reluctant, involuntary thump against the linoleum.

"Much better," she smiled, scratching my chin. "Now... food."

We moved to the food aisle, where rows of multi-colored kibble bags promised *'Wolf Ancestry Nutrition'* and *'Wild Instinct Grain-Free Meals.'*

I sniffed a torn bag of dried brown pellets on the bottom shelf and nearly gagged at the artificial filler scent.

Maya picked up a forty-pound bag of high-protein dog food, checking the price tag. I watched her brow furrow slightly as she calculated the expense against her tight weekly budget.

Without hesitating, I lifted my paw and intentionally shoved a much cheaper, plain brown bag off the shelf. It hit the floor with a loud thud right at her feet.

Maya blinked in surprise. "Bear? You want this one? It's... basic, but the ingredients aren't bad."

I let out a soft, approving huff, resting my snout against the cheaper bag.

*We are not eating sawdust,* Fenris protested, his stomach churning at the thought.

*We aren't going to eat it at all,* I replied smoothly. *I'll slip out tonight to hunt stag in the reserve, but I won't let her stress her bank account over fake wolf food.*

Maya smiled softly, kneeling beside me to smooth down the fur on my back. "You're a cheap date, aren't you, big guy? Thank you. I'll buy you some fresh chicken breasts from the butcher next door to mix in."

Before we could head to the checkout, a sharp, familiar scent pierced through the store’s artificial air—chemical cologne, male shifter musk, and hostility.

My head snapped around.

Standing two aisles over, pretending to look at cat toys, was a tall, lean man in a leather jacket. His eyes were amber, his posture coiled tight. A mid-ranking Vance Pack scout.

He wasn't watching the pets. His eyes were locked firmly onto Maya, tracking her movements as she placed the food bag in her cart.

*He followed us from the district,* Fenris growled, all humor vanishing in a heartbeat. *He's mapping her daily routine.*

I stepped in front of Maya, my body locking into a deadly, immovable posture. I let my lips roll back over my razor-sharp teeth just enough to show the ivory, keeping my growl deep in my throat—inaudible to human ears, but carrying a deafening subsonic frequency only another shifter could feel.

Across the store, the Vance scout suddenly stiffened. His nostrils flared as he caught the overwhelming, suffocating aura of an Alpha threatening to rip him apart. His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as he scanned the room, unable to locate the source of the dominant power suppressing him.

He took three frantic steps backward, nearly knocking over a display of birdcages, and bolted out the store’s side exit.

"Bear?" Maya asked, pulling her cart up beside me and looking down in concern. "What's wrong? What are you looking at?"

I turned back to her instantly, dropping my lips, flattening my ears, and giving her a big, sloppy, goofy canine yawn.

"Silly boy," Maya giggled, reaching down to hook the black leather lead to my new harness. "Let's get home. I have a feeling today is going to be a very busy day."

As we walked out into the afternoon sun, my mind was already executing the next move.

The Vance Pack was getting bold. They were stalking my mate in broad daylight.

It was time for Fenris Blackwood to drop by *The Sugar Whisk* as her new landlord—and leave an elite squad of Blackthorn pack guards disguised as "security consultants" on her street corners.

  • The Alpha's Stray Secret    Light in The Obsidian

The private training sanctum beneath Blackthorn Manor was a vast, subterranean amphitheater carved from pure obsidian. Runes of ancient warding sparkled faintly along the high stone ceiling, absorbing the raw energy radiating off the two figures standing at the center of the sand-dusted floor.Maya stood three paces from Fenris, her knees slightly bent, her breath coming in steady, rhythmic gulps. The sheer heat radiating off him was staggering. Deprived of his Shadow-Construct projection by her insistence, Fenris was forcing his volatile dark aura to condense entirely within his physical body. Ink-black wisps of magic coiled around his broad shoulders like writhing serpents, snapping against the air with the sound of static electricity."Focus, Maya," Fenris instructed, his voice lower than usual, carrying a rough, primal resonance. His storm-gray eyes were entirely gone, replaced by glowing pools of dangerous, molten gold. "If you try to push your light directly into my core, my sha

The heavy oak doors of the High Council chamber slammed shut behind them with a booming thud, cutting off the furious, echoing murmurs of the elders and the ominous strike of Cassian’s gavel.Maya kept her stride matched to Fenris as they navigated the dimly lit subterranean corridors beneath Blackthorn Manor. The air down here was thick with the scent of damp stone, ancient pine, and centuries of dark pack magic. Yet, despite the cold draft sweeping through the corridor, all Maya could focus on was the intense, radiating heat coming from where Fenris’s fingers remained locked firmly around her own. His grip was unyielding—not oppressive, but an anchor. A silent, physical declaration that neither of them was standing alone in this viper's nest anymore."You are an absolute maniac, Fenris," Maya said softly, breaking the heavy silence as they turned into the quiet sanctuary of the estate's private residential wing. "You just handed Elder Cassian the exact weapon he wanted on a silver p

The grand chamber of the High Council was carved from solid granite beneath Blackthorn Manor, illuminated by towering iron braziers that cast jagged, dancing shadows across the ancient stone walls. At the center of the hall stood the Council’s elevated dais, where seven senior elders sat wrapped in heavy furs and embroidered silk. At the head of the crescent table sat Elder Cassian, his frail, wrinkled hands resting on an ornate oak gavel. Down on the marble floor below, flanked by six armed Blackwood enforcers, stood Maya and Fenris.Fenris had shed his blood-soaked shirt for a tailored black tactical tunic, his broad shoulders relaxed, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. But the subtle tension in his jaw and the volatile gold glimmering at the edges of his storm-gray eyes made it clear he was a predator waiting to strike."This court was not called to hear excuses, Fenris," Cassian’s raspy voice echoed through the vast, echoing hall. "You brought an unsanctioned civilian int

The double doors of the Alpha’s private medical wing clicked shut, locking out Elder Cassian’s infuriated protests and leaving an echoing, heavy silence in their wake. The inner sanctum of Blackthorn Manor was vastly different from the sterile medical bay outside. Sleek, polished obsidian walls absorbed the harsh fluorescent lighting, replaced instead by the low, amber glow of recessed sconces. The air here was warm, thick with the heavy scent of rich cedar, dried herbs, and the sharp, metallic tang of Fenris’s spilling blood.Fenris released Maya’s wrist, his posture instantly collapsing as his knees buckled."Fenris!" Maya caught him under his arms, his massive frame nearly pinning her against the edge of the leather examination table. His skin was burning hot—a stark contrast to the freezing chill that had filled the elevator during the soul-merge."I'm fine," Fenris grunted through gritted teeth, though his sweat-sheened forehead and graying lips betrayed him. He hauled his weight

The heavy, reinforced steel doors of the private elevator slid shut, sealing the three of them inside a vacuum of absolute, suffocating silence.Maya remained on her knees, her hands buried deep in the thick, silver-tinted fur of the wolf across her lap. Bear’s flanks were shuddering violently, his breathing coming in shallow, wet hitches that vibrated against her knees. The copper scent of his blood mixed with the scorched smell of ozone filled the small space, making her head spin."Fenris, he's fading," Maya said, her voice tight with panic as she looked up at the towering figure standing over them. She reached out with her Sun-Wolf aura, trying to project a thread of golden warmth into the animal’s wounds, but the darkness around his torn flesh repelled her light. "We need to get him to a medical bay right now. He took a direct hit from those shadow-blades!""He doesn't need a medical team, Maya," Fenris said quietly. His voice was stripped of the cold, lethal authority he had use

The red laser sights of their rifles swept the room, painting jagged lines across the torn wallpaper and scorched floorboards. Vance adjusted the lapels of his immaculate c
