The Double Shift

last update Fecha de publicación: 2026-08-30 20:17:20

I had precisely eight minutes to make it back to the alley, strip off a four-thousand-dollar suit, shift back into a 150-pound wolf, and look pitiful on the bakery back porch before Maya walked out to trash the morning espresso grounds.

*Faster,* Fenris urged in my head. *If she catches us out there as a human, the whole plan falls apart.*

I ducked behind the dumpster in the narrow back alley, loosening my tie in a blur of movement. I peeled off the jacket, neatly folded the trousers, and stashed the clothes inside a waterproof duffel bag hidden under the emergency fire escape.

Then came the shift.

It never got easier, but years of military-grade discipline made it swift. Muscles tore and reconstituted, spine lengthening, bones cracking and rearranging under a wave of intense heat. Black fur erupted across my skin, my jaw extended, and my view of the alley dropped three feet lower to the pavement.

I shook out my coat, grabbed a mouthful of wet leaves from the ground, and rubbed my side against the brick wall to destroy the scent of my expensive cologne.

*Pure perfection,* Fenris purred inside my skull, shaking out his paws. *Back to being a mutt.*

I trotted up the three wooden steps of the back porch, flopped down right beside the screen door, and let out a heavy, dramatic sigh.

A second later, the latch clicked. Maya pushed the door open, carrying a silver bucket of spent coffee grounds. She froze, her wide brown eyes lighting up the moment she saw me lying there.

"Bear!" she gasped, setting the bucket down instantly. She dropped to her knees, gathering my giant head into her arms and burying her face in the fur of my neck. "Where did you go? I came out to check on you after the rush and you weren't on your rug. I thought you ran away!"

My heart thumped hard against my ribs. The scent of sweet vanilla and cinnamon enveloped me, dissolving all the lingering stress of pack dominance and high-stakes corporate warfare. I tilted my head, giving her cheek a long, damp lick.

"Ew, Bear, dog breath!" she laughed, though she didn't pull away. She leaned her back against the brick wall, pulling my massive head onto her lap and resting her hands over my ears. "You won't believe the morning I've had."

I rested my snout against her knee, gazing up at her with big, innocent, dim-witted wolf eyes. *Tell me everything, little mate.*

"Those horrible real estate men came back," she whispered, her fingers massaging the spot behind my left ear that made my back leg twitch involuntarily. "They practically threatened to burn the place down. I was so scared, Bear. I really thought today was the day I’d have to pack up my mother’s bakery and tell everyone I failed."

A cold, lethal growl vibrated deep in my chest.

"I know, right?" Maya agreed, taking my growl as sympathy. "They were awful. But then..." She let out a long breath, a faint, rosy flush dusting her cheeks as she stared out into the alley. "The most insane thing happened."

I perked my ears up, playing dumb.

"This man walked in," she continued, her voice dropping to a near-reverent whisper. "Mr. Blackwood. Fenris Blackwood. Bear, I swear to you, I’ve never seen anyone like him. He looked like he walked straight off the cover of a magazine—tall, broad, dark hair, eyes like gray steel... and he just *owned* the room the second he stepped inside."

*Oh, really?* I thought, my tail giving a subtle, arrogant wag against the wooden porch floorboards. *Tell me more.*

*Don't let it go to your head,* Fenris grumbled in my mind, though he was practically preening with pride.

"He bought the whole block," Maya said, still looking dazed. "The entire commercial district! He froze my rent for ten years and gave me an exclusive corporate catering contract. Just like that! He saved *The Sugar Whisk* in less than five minutes."

She looked down at me, her brown eyes soft and searching. She cupped my snout with both hands. "He was intimidating, though. Powerful. The kind of man who could crush a person without lifting a finger. But when he looked at me..." She trailed off, biting her lower lip, a nervous flutter in her chest that I could pick up with my heightened shifter hearing. "I felt this crazy spark. Like my whole body went on high alert."

*That's the mate bond, sweetheart,* I thought fiercely. *You feel it, too.*

"Anyway," Maya snapped herself out of it, shaking her head with a soft chuckle. "Listen to me, blabbing to a dog about a billionaire standard-issue prince charming. He’s a high-powered CEO, and I’m covered in flour half the day. It was just a business transaction."

She patted my head and stood up, smoothing down her apron. "Come on inside, big guy. I saved a strip of unseasoned bacon for you, and then we need to get ready for the evening rush."

I trotted behind her into the warm kitchen, my wolf spirits soaring.

She felt the bond. She was attracted to Fenris Blackwood, and she was fiercely protective of Bear.

Now, I just had to make sure the Vance Pack didn't figure out that the billionaire landlord saving her business and the massive stray sleeping on her kitchen floor were the exact same monster.

  • The Alpha's Stray Secret    Light in The Obsidian

The private training sanctum beneath Blackthorn Manor was a vast, subterranean amphitheater carved from pure obsidian. Runes of ancient warding sparkled faintly along the high stone ceiling, absorbing the raw energy radiating off the two figures standing at the center of the sand-dusted floor.Maya stood three paces from Fenris, her knees slightly bent, her breath coming in steady, rhythmic gulps. The sheer heat radiating off him was staggering. Deprived of his Shadow-Construct projection by her insistence, Fenris was forcing his volatile dark aura to condense entirely within his physical body. Ink-black wisps of magic coiled around his broad shoulders like writhing serpents, snapping against the air with the sound of static electricity."Focus, Maya," Fenris instructed, his voice lower than usual, carrying a rough, primal resonance. His storm-gray eyes were entirely gone, replaced by glowing pools of dangerous, molten gold. "If you try to push your light directly into my core, my sha

The heavy oak doors of the High Council chamber slammed shut behind them with a booming thud, cutting off the furious, echoing murmurs of the elders and the ominous strike of Cassian’s gavel.Maya kept her stride matched to Fenris as they navigated the dimly lit subterranean corridors beneath Blackthorn Manor. The air down here was thick with the scent of damp stone, ancient pine, and centuries of dark pack magic. Yet, despite the cold draft sweeping through the corridor, all Maya could focus on was the intense, radiating heat coming from where Fenris’s fingers remained locked firmly around her own. His grip was unyielding—not oppressive, but an anchor. A silent, physical declaration that neither of them was standing alone in this viper's nest anymore."You are an absolute maniac, Fenris," Maya said softly, breaking the heavy silence as they turned into the quiet sanctuary of the estate's private residential wing. "You just handed Elder Cassian the exact weapon he wanted on a silver p

The grand chamber of the High Council was carved from solid granite beneath Blackthorn Manor, illuminated by towering iron braziers that cast jagged, dancing shadows across the ancient stone walls. At the center of the hall stood the Council’s elevated dais, where seven senior elders sat wrapped in heavy furs and embroidered silk. At the head of the crescent table sat Elder Cassian, his frail, wrinkled hands resting on an ornate oak gavel. Down on the marble floor below, flanked by six armed Blackwood enforcers, stood Maya and Fenris.Fenris had shed his blood-soaked shirt for a tailored black tactical tunic, his broad shoulders relaxed, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. But the subtle tension in his jaw and the volatile gold glimmering at the edges of his storm-gray eyes made it clear he was a predator waiting to strike."This court was not called to hear excuses, Fenris," Cassian’s raspy voice echoed through the vast, echoing hall. "You brought an unsanctioned civilian int

The double doors of the Alpha’s private medical wing clicked shut, locking out Elder Cassian’s infuriated protests and leaving an echoing, heavy silence in their wake. The inner sanctum of Blackthorn Manor was vastly different from the sterile medical bay outside. Sleek, polished obsidian walls absorbed the harsh fluorescent lighting, replaced instead by the low, amber glow of recessed sconces. The air here was warm, thick with the heavy scent of rich cedar, dried herbs, and the sharp, metallic tang of Fenris’s spilling blood.Fenris released Maya’s wrist, his posture instantly collapsing as his knees buckled."Fenris!" Maya caught him under his arms, his massive frame nearly pinning her against the edge of the leather examination table. His skin was burning hot—a stark contrast to the freezing chill that had filled the elevator during the soul-merge."I'm fine," Fenris grunted through gritted teeth, though his sweat-sheened forehead and graying lips betrayed him. He hauled his weight

The heavy, reinforced steel doors of the private elevator slid shut, sealing the three of them inside a vacuum of absolute, suffocating silence.Maya remained on her knees, her hands buried deep in the thick, silver-tinted fur of the wolf across her lap. Bear’s flanks were shuddering violently, his breathing coming in shallow, wet hitches that vibrated against her knees. The copper scent of his blood mixed with the scorched smell of ozone filled the small space, making her head spin."Fenris, he's fading," Maya said, her voice tight with panic as she looked up at the towering figure standing over them. She reached out with her Sun-Wolf aura, trying to project a thread of golden warmth into the animal’s wounds, but the darkness around his torn flesh repelled her light. "We need to get him to a medical bay right now. He took a direct hit from those shadow-blades!""He doesn't need a medical team, Maya," Fenris said quietly. His voice was stripped of the cold, lethal authority he had use

Bear’s breaths came in shallow, ragged hitches, his flanks shuddering under the weight of his injuries. Every instinct in her body screamed to protect him, to shield the wounded animal from the storm brewing outside the shattered floor-to-ceiling windows.Heavy, tactical boots crunched over broken glass."Secure the perimeter!" a harsh, authoritative voice barked from the corridor. "Vanguard Team One, establish a containment grid. No one enters without level-four clearance!"Victor Vance stepped through the blown-out entrance, flanked by four heavily armed operatives clad in tactical gear. The red laser sights of their rifles swept the room, painting jagged lines across the torn wallpaper and scorched floorboards. Vance adjusted the lapels of his immaculate c
