**The Alpha’s Stray Secret** *He rules five territories with an iron fist. But to win her heart, he’ll have to sit, stay, and play dead.* Fenris Blackwood is the feared, unyielding Alpha of the Blackthorn Pack—a lethal shifter whose presence alone strikes terror into rival clans. After years of waiting, he finally tracks down his true mate, Maya, only to discover she’s a gentle, unsuspecting human who runs a struggling local bakery. Approaching her as a six-foot-four billionaire Alpha in a tailored suit would only trigger panic, bring his dangerous enemies directly to her doorstep, and send her running for the police. Desperate to get close and protect her, Fenris does the unthinkable: he suppresses his Alpha aura, rolls in the mud, and poses as a pitiful, overgrown stray dog on her porch. Maya can’t resist a rescue in need. She takes the massive, 150-pound "Bear" into her home, completely unaware that her charming new mutt is actually a powerful shape-shifter listening to her every secret. As Fenris juggles high-stakes pack politics, rival turf wars, and the domestic humiliation of bubble baths and dog beds, the line between man and beast blurs. But when rival wolves begin circling Maya’s bakery, Fenris must pull off the ultimate double-life—acting as her loyal pet by night and stepping in as a ruthless corporate investor by day. How long can an Alpha hide his true nature when his mate is in danger? And what happens when the stray she opened her door to turns out to be the most dangerous man in the city?

The Alpha in the Mud

The scent hit me three miles away: sweet rain, warm cinnamon, and the crisp, intoxicating pull of home.

My wolf, Fenris, reared up behind my ribs, clawing at my mind to break into a full-throttle sprint. *Mate. Ours. Go to her.*

*Quiet,* I snapped back mentally, gripping the leather steering wheel of my SUV until the frame groaned under my strength.

I couldn't just walk up to her. As Alpha of the Blackthorn Pack, my presence came with political enemies, blood debts, and a permanent target painted on my back. A fragile human girl wouldn't survive twenty-four hours if the council or rival packs realized she was my sole vulnerability. Worse, if a six-foot-four stranger in a tailored suit approached her in the dark, she wouldn't fall into my arms—she’d call the cops.

I pulled into the dim alleyway across from a cozy, light-filled bakery called *The Sugar Whisk*.

Through the fogged windshield, I watched her. She had a smudge of flour across her left cheek, her dark hair pinned up loosely as she swept the front entrance. She was humming a tune I couldn't hear over the rain drumming against my roof, completely oblivious to the powerful predator watching her every move from the shadows.

My chest throbbed with a hollow, physical ache. I had spent twenty-eight years waiting for the Moon Goddess to grant me a mate, and now that she was standing fifty feet away, a thin pane of glass was keeping me from claiming her.

*We can't approach her as an Alpha,* Fenris growled, his voice a low rumbling whimper in my head. *Then don't be an Alpha. Be something she won't run from.*

I paused, staring at my reflection in the rearview mirror. Cold gray eyes, sharp jawline, lethal intent. No human woman in her right mind would let me close without jumping. But humans loved strays. They couldn't resist a helpless animal in need of shelter.

*You want me to act like a pet?* I asked, my pride bristling. *I rule five territories.*

*She is sweeping wet leaves off a porch,* Fenris countered smugly. *She likes neat things. Go look pitiful.*

Decision made. I parked the SUV in a hidden alley garage three blocks over, stripped off my suit, and let the bone-cracking heat of the Shift take over. Muscles expanded, skin gave way to dense, midnight-black fur, and my senses magnified tenfold.

To look like a harmless mutt, I had to suppress my Alpha aura completely. I forced my massive frame—usually towering and broad enough to strike terror into rogue packs—to slouch. I trotted through a deep mud puddle, rolling in the cold sludge until my glossy fur was a tangled, miserable mess. I dragged my ears down flat against my skull, let my tail droop between my legs, and trotted back toward *The Sugar Whisk*.

By the time I reached the porch, the rain was coming down hard. Perfect.

I sat right beside the door, shivering slightly on purpose, and squeezed my eyes half-shut.

The door creaked open.

"Oh, goodness!"

Her voice hit me like a physical wave—soft, warm, and musical. The scent of cinnamon and sugar burst over me, almost making my wolf break restraint and leap up to lick her face.

She dropped her broom, rushing over to the edge of the porch. Her name was Maya—I had learned it from my scouts' reports weeks ago, but hearing her voice in person made my heart hammer against my ribs.

"Hey there, buddy... where did you come from?" she whispered softly, crouching down a few feet away. She didn't look terrified; she looked heartbroken for me.

I gave a low, pathetic whine, tilting my head and letting my ears droop even lower. I shifted my paw slightly, pretending to favor it as if I were injured.

"Oh, you poor thing," Maya gasped, reaching out a hand.

*Careful,* I told Fenris, who was practically vibrating with excitement inside my mind. *Don't bite, don't jump, don't act like a beast.*

Her warm, soft fingers touched the top of my head. Electric shocks of the mate bond rippled instantly through my fur, shooting down my spine. It took every ounce of my formidable willpower not to let out a deep, chest-rumbling purr or shift back into my human form and pin her right there on the wooden floorboards.

She gasped softly, pulling her hand back for a fraction of a second as if she felt the spark, too. "You're... huge. What kind of dog are you?"

She inspected my dark fur, missing the lethal muscle underneath the dirt. To her, I was just an overgrown, abandoned mixed breed caught in a thunderstorm.

"Where's your collar?" She looked around the empty, rain-slicked street. "Did someone just leave you out here?"

I let out another small, sad huff, resting my heavy snout directly on her knee.

Maya froze, her breath hitching before a gentle smile broke across her face. She smoothed her palm down my wet back, completely unfazed by the mud soaking into her apron. "Okay. Okay, big guy. I can't leave you out in the storm. Come inside."

She stood up and held the door open.

Fenris was practically doing victory laps. I trotted past her, making sure to step lightly on my fake-injured paw, and crossed the threshold into her world. The air inside smelled of vanilla, roasted coffee beans, and *her*.

As Maya closed the door against the howling wind, locking us inside together, a slow, triumphant realization washed over me.

I was the feared Alpha of Blackthorn Pack, sitting in a bakery kitchen, covered in mud, about to be pampered by my human mate.

The political rivalries could wait. Right now, I had a dog bed to conquer.
