The Suits and Shadows

By eleven in the morning, the smell of burnt sugar and cheap cologne ruined the cozy warmth of *The Sugar Whisk*.

I was curled up under the front corner table, resting my snout on my paws, watching two men in sharp gray suits corner Maya at the register. They weren't low-level rogues like the scouts in the sedan; these were Vance Pack enforcers playing corporate cutthroats.

"Look, Miss Lin," the larger of the two—a slimy wolf named Marcus—said, tapping a manicured finger against the glass display case. "The Vance Real Estate Group is offering you fifty thousand above market value. That’s more than generous for a bakery that’s barely breaking even."

"I told you yesterday, Mr. Vance," Maya said, her voice steady despite the slight tremor in her hands. "This bakery was my mother's. The building isn't for sale. My lease has three years left, and I intend to honor it."

Marcus leaned forward, lowering his voice into a subtle, threatening register designed to make human heart rates spike. "Leases can be bought out, Maya. Buildings develop... structural issues. Fire hazards. It would be a shame if something happened to your kitchen before you reconsidered."

*That's it,* Fenris snarled, his teeth snapping inside my head. *I am biting his throat out right here over the linoleum.*

*Patience,* I ordered. *We ruin them legally first. Then we tear them apart.*

I let out a low, gravelly growl from beneath the table, slowly standing up. My broad shoulders filled the space beneath the tabletop as I stepped out, my dark fur bristling.

Marcus glanced down, his eyes widening slightly as he took in my massive frame. For a second, his predator instincts flared—he knew a threat when he saw one, even if he couldn't recognize my suppressed Alpha aura under the dog disguise.

"What is that thing?" Marcus sneered, taking a step back.

"He’s my dog," Maya said, stepping in front of me and placing a protective hand on my head. Her touch instantly kept my violent urges in check. "And we’d like you to leave. Now."

Marcus narrowed his eyes, adjusting his silk tie. "We'll be in touch, Miss Lin. You have until the end of the week."

The moment the bell above the door chimed and the two wolves stepped out onto the street, Maya sank onto one of the wooden chairs, burying her face in her hands. Her shoulders trembled slightly.

I trotted over, placing my heavy head squarely on her knee, letting out a soft, comforting huff.

"Oh, Bear," she whispered, her voice cracking as she scratched behind my ears. "I don't know what I'm going to do. If they buy the building owner out, they can double my rent next month. I can't afford that."

I nudged her hand softly, looking straight into her eyes. *I've got you, little mate. Just wait.*

Ten minutes later, Maya went into the back kitchen to check on a batch of bread dough.

That was my cue.

I slipped out through the cracked back alley door, trotted three blocks down into the secure garage where I’d left my SUV, and let the bone-snapping heat of the Shift take over. Fur receded, bones resized, and within sixty seconds, Fenris Blackwood was standing human once more.

I pulled a fresh, charcoal-gray tailored suit from the back seat, straightened my silver tie, and checked my reflection in the mirror. Cold gray eyes, immaculate hair, lethal authority. The dog was gone. The Alpha was back.

I pulled out my phone and dialed my Beta, Vance.

"Boss?" Vance answered on the first ring. "Where have you been? You missed the morning territory briefing—"

"Buy the commercial block on 4th and Elm," I interrupted, my voice dropping into the deep, unyielding tone of absolute command. "The whole block. Every building, every lease."

There was a brief pause on the line. "The district near the river? Boss, that’s contested Vance Pack territory. It’s not worth—"

"I don't care what it costs," I snapped, pulling on my leather watch. "Outbid them by five million if you have to. Wire the funds, secure the deeds under Blackthorn Holdings, and have the ownership papers delivered to my tablet in twenty minutes."

"Understood, Alpha. Consider it done."

At 12:30 PM, the bell above the door of *The Sugar Whisk* chimed again.

Maya wiped her hands on her apron, stepping out from the back kitchen with a polite customer smile. "Welcome to *The Sugar—*"

She froze mid-sentence.

I stood in the center of her small bakery, taking up space with the deliberate authority of a man who owned everything he walked into. Her breath hitched, her dark eyes wide as she took in my tailored suit, my height, and the calculated intensity of my gaze.

The mate bond flared between us like a physical fire. Even in human form, the pull was instantaneous. Maya gasped softly, taking a half-step back, her hand fluttering to her throat as a bright, confused blush rose to her cheeks.

"Good afternoon," I said, my voice smooth as aged whiskey. "Are you Maya Lin?"

"I... yes," she stammered, shaking herself out of her trance and leaning against the counter for support. "Yes, I am. Can I... can I help you, sir?"

"My name is Fenris Blackwood," I said, stepping up to the counter. I pulled a sleek leather folder from under my arm and laid it flat on the glass. "I'm the chief executive of Blackthorn Holdings."

Maya’s eyes flicked from the folder to my face. "Blackthorn? I... I'm sorry, Mr. Blackwood, but if this is about buying out my lease, I just told the Vance representatives—"

"The Vance Group no longer owns the rights to this building," I cut in calmly. I opened the folder, revealing the freshly stamped deed and property transfers signed ten minutes ago. "As of twenty minutes ago, Blackthorn Holdings has acquired this entire block. Including *The Sugar Whisk*."

Maya blinked, stunned. "You... bought the block? Just now?"

"I did," I said, leaning one hand on the counter, closing the distance between us. The scent of vanilla and rain filled my lungs, driving my wolf wild. "And as your new landlord, I am here to inform you that your rent is frozen for the next ten years. Furthermore, Blackthorn Holdings is prepared to offer you an exclusive catering contract for all our corporate events."

Maya stared at me as if I had just dropped from the moon. "Why would a billionaire corporate group do that for a tiny neighborhood bakery?"

I let a subtle, dangerous smile touch the corners of my lips.

"Because, Miss Lin," I murmured, locking my eyes onto hers, "I like neat things. And I hear your cinnamon rolls are unmatched."

  • The Alpha's Stray Secret    Light in The Obsidian

The private training sanctum beneath Blackthorn Manor was a vast, subterranean amphitheater carved from pure obsidian. Runes of ancient warding sparkled faintly along the high stone ceiling, absorbing the raw energy radiating off the two figures standing at the center of the sand-dusted floor.Maya stood three paces from Fenris, her knees slightly bent, her breath coming in steady, rhythmic gulps. The sheer heat radiating off him was staggering. Deprived of his Shadow-Construct projection by her insistence, Fenris was forcing his volatile dark aura to condense entirely within his physical body. Ink-black wisps of magic coiled around his broad shoulders like writhing serpents, snapping against the air with the sound of static electricity."Focus, Maya," Fenris instructed, his voice lower than usual, carrying a rough, primal resonance. His storm-gray eyes were entirely gone, replaced by glowing pools of dangerous, molten gold. "If you try to push your light directly into my core, my sha

The heavy oak doors of the High Council chamber slammed shut behind them with a booming thud, cutting off the furious, echoing murmurs of the elders and the ominous strike of Cassian’s gavel.Maya kept her stride matched to Fenris as they navigated the dimly lit subterranean corridors beneath Blackthorn Manor. The air down here was thick with the scent of damp stone, ancient pine, and centuries of dark pack magic. Yet, despite the cold draft sweeping through the corridor, all Maya could focus on was the intense, radiating heat coming from where Fenris’s fingers remained locked firmly around her own. His grip was unyielding—not oppressive, but an anchor. A silent, physical declaration that neither of them was standing alone in this viper's nest anymore."You are an absolute maniac, Fenris," Maya said softly, breaking the heavy silence as they turned into the quiet sanctuary of the estate's private residential wing. "You just handed Elder Cassian the exact weapon he wanted on a silver p

The grand chamber of the High Council was carved from solid granite beneath Blackthorn Manor, illuminated by towering iron braziers that cast jagged, dancing shadows across the ancient stone walls. At the center of the hall stood the Council’s elevated dais, where seven senior elders sat wrapped in heavy furs and embroidered silk. At the head of the crescent table sat Elder Cassian, his frail, wrinkled hands resting on an ornate oak gavel. Down on the marble floor below, flanked by six armed Blackwood enforcers, stood Maya and Fenris.Fenris had shed his blood-soaked shirt for a tailored black tactical tunic, his broad shoulders relaxed, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. But the subtle tension in his jaw and the volatile gold glimmering at the edges of his storm-gray eyes made it clear he was a predator waiting to strike."This court was not called to hear excuses, Fenris," Cassian’s raspy voice echoed through the vast, echoing hall. "You brought an unsanctioned civilian int

The double doors of the Alpha’s private medical wing clicked shut, locking out Elder Cassian’s infuriated protests and leaving an echoing, heavy silence in their wake. The inner sanctum of Blackthorn Manor was vastly different from the sterile medical bay outside. Sleek, polished obsidian walls absorbed the harsh fluorescent lighting, replaced instead by the low, amber glow of recessed sconces. The air here was warm, thick with the heavy scent of rich cedar, dried herbs, and the sharp, metallic tang of Fenris’s spilling blood.Fenris released Maya’s wrist, his posture instantly collapsing as his knees buckled."Fenris!" Maya caught him under his arms, his massive frame nearly pinning her against the edge of the leather examination table. His skin was burning hot—a stark contrast to the freezing chill that had filled the elevator during the soul-merge."I'm fine," Fenris grunted through gritted teeth, though his sweat-sheened forehead and graying lips betrayed him. He hauled his weight

The heavy, reinforced steel doors of the private elevator slid shut, sealing the three of them inside a vacuum of absolute, suffocating silence.Maya remained on her knees, her hands buried deep in the thick, silver-tinted fur of the wolf across her lap. Bear’s flanks were shuddering violently, his breathing coming in shallow, wet hitches that vibrated against her knees. The copper scent of his blood mixed with the scorched smell of ozone filled the small space, making her head spin."Fenris, he's fading," Maya said, her voice tight with panic as she looked up at the towering figure standing over them. She reached out with her Sun-Wolf aura, trying to project a thread of golden warmth into the animal’s wounds, but the darkness around his torn flesh repelled her light. "We need to get him to a medical bay right now. He took a direct hit from those shadow-blades!""He doesn't need a medical team, Maya," Fenris said quietly. His voice was stripped of the cold, lethal authority he had use
