LUCIANO

I pulled her into my arms then, because I couldn’t stand to see her cry, even when she was in the wrong. “I know you are. But sorry doesn’t really fix this. Trust is broken. Not just mine. Members of the pack too. Elias.” She hunched her shoulders at his name.

“And it has to be rebuilt. And part of that means you understand that your actions have consequences beyond just you.”

I stroked her hair, “But now, how about you worry about that tomorrow and get some rest instead. Hmm?”

She nodded against my chest, muttering about how she'll do better and left.

The door clicked shut behind Peniel. I stood there for a long moment in the study, the weight on my shoulders gone.

She was safe. Her mother was safe. That was what mattered.

I sat at my desk and pulled a stack of reports toward me, needing the mindless work. I had just started when a soft knock came at the door.

“Enter.”

Silas stepped in. He looked tired. “Alpha.”

“Report,” I said, not looking up.

“We did a thorough sweep of

LUCIANOI didn’t move. I stood facing the window, looking out at the dark, silent pack grounds.Peniel went straight to the dungeons. The guard, under my earlier orders, let her pass. I watched through the security monitor, a human invention I’d installed for moments like this. She found Preya in a small but clean cell. The moment the maid saw her, she rushed to the bars. They grasped each other’s hands, both crying.“I’m so sorry, Preya,” Peniel sobbed. “This is all my fault.”“No, Luna, don’t say that,” Preya said, her own voice thick. “I don’t ever regret going with you. My only regret is that I let you go into that cave alone. I should have stayed closer.”“You didn’t let me do anything. Besides, you did the right thing running for help,” Peniel said, wiping her face. “If they had caught you… I can’t even think about it.” She shuddered.Silence reigned for a few minutes.“Your mother?” Preya asked. “Is she…”“She’s safe.” Peniel cut in, she smiled then frowned. “All thanks to Luci

LUCIANOI looked at Peniel, who was watching my face. She saw the grim truth in my eyes.“They moved her,” she whispered, her face crumbling again.“We’ll find her,” I promised, the vow leaving my lips before I could think. It was a promise I couldn’t be sure I could keep, but I would die trying. “But first, I’m getting you to the rendezvous point. The warriors I brought are there. You’ll be protected.”“No,” she said, surprising me. She grabbed my arm. “Not without my mother. I won’t leave her. I can’t.”“Peniel..”“No! I’m not going to hide while she’s out there because of me!” Her voice was fierce, edged with the same stubborn courage that had made her run here in the first place. It was the fire I loved, even when it drove me mad.“I'm sorry I ran away and caused you trouble, but please! I can't leave without my mother.” She pleaded.I was about to argue when a new sound cut through the night. Not from the woods. From the river. It was the low, deep groan of old wood bending. Then

LUCIANOMy gaze darkened. I slowly dragged my eyes back to his. My wolf was at the surface, my vision sharpening, my anger just at the edge. “You’re hurting my mate,” I said, each word holding a promise of vengeance.“I’ll do worse!” he shrieked. “I swear!”I took a deep, steadying breath, letting him see me surrender. “Alright,” I said, my shoulders slumping slightly. “I swear to the Moon Goddess…”He leaned forward, desperation clouding his eyes. “Yes? Go on!”I smiled, a cruel, predatory twist of my lips. “…to give you a head start before I kill you.”His face whipped back, confusion swimming in his eyes. The words didn’t compute. A head start… before I kill you? That split-second of confusion was all we needed.Peniel didn’t wait for a signal. She threw her weight backward with all her strength. The wooden chair legs screeched against the stone floor. It tipped. Kael, caught off balance and already leaning backward, stumbled with her.The knife wavered, slicing a shallow line acro

LUCIANO“Baby, I need you to focus and look around. Tell me in clear details what's around you.’“Lucian…” her voice getting weaker by the second. “I hear… the river? The river. That was something. The west side of the territory had the river running along its edge. But that was still miles of riverbank.Peniel! But her voice was already fading, the connection stretching thin and then snapping. The dampener, or her strength gone.Bile, sharp and acidic, rose in my throat. I had no real direction. Just ‘west’ and ‘river’. And west was a huge area.“Rowan!” I linked, already beginning to run, my paws tearing up the forest floor. “Status! Did you reach the east location?”His voice came back, strained and punctuated by the sounds of combat. Still fighting, Alpha! Resistance is heavy! We haven’t breached the building yet!His voice came back, strained and punctuated by the sounds of combat. “We're still trying to neutralize the enemy, Alpha! Their resistance is heavy! LUCIANO “Rowan!” I mind-linked the other man, the thought screaming through my head. “Change of plan! They're split up! East and west! I don't know which is which! Take your team east! Now!”“On it, Alpha!”I took a step toward the western direction, my body already coiling to run, to shift, to tear through the forest to find her.Silas's voice stopped me."Oh, I did forget to mention the catch," he said, and now a real, ugly smile touched his lips. "You have to get through me first."He didn't wait. His shift was fast and seamless. One second he was a man, the next a large, sleek wolf with fur the color of dried blood and eyes that glowed amber in the dark. He crouched, teeth bared."And Luciano?" Henry's voice came from the side. He was shifting too, his own wolf form emerging, grizzled and gray but still powerful. "There's a time limit. If you're not fast enough… well, you can imagine."Two against one. In the middle of enemy woods. And my mate was waiting in one direction, her li
