LUCIANO

I didn’t trust him. Not his smile, not his words, not the too-calm way his men stood behind him.

“We will consider his invitation, ” I said dismissively. “You may go.”

Kael bowed again. “We await your response.”

After they were escorted out, I turned to Peniel. Her face was pale but set with determination.

“You saw it too, didn't you?” I asked.

She nodded. “They weren’t here for peace. They were studying us.”

“I know. They were scouts. Silas is testing us. He's trying to decide if we are the stronger ally, or the easier target."

Later that night, I was in my study with my Beta Silas, looking over maps of the borderlands. A soft knock came at the door.

It was Peniel. She was holding a small, folded piece of parchment.

"One of the maid girls gave me this," she said, her voice unsteady. "It was found tucked under the bread basket after the envoy left."

She handed it to me. I unfolded it. It was not written in common script. It was a rough drawing. A map of our territory's western

PENIELIf you're wondering if I left Preya behind. I didn't. The thought of my father or his goons trying something disgusting was enough to make me stay put.Preya made it back safely, the bundle of clothes sticking out of her small backpack. “From the gardeners’ laundry line,” she whispered. “No one will notice.” she shrugged, “For a while at least.”Once we got past the border markings, we found a dense thicket to hide in. “Ready?” I asked, my voice low.Preya just nodded, her eyes wide but determined.I closed my eyes and called to my wolf. The shift was faster now, smoother than it used to be. Power flowed through my limbs, fur sprouted, and my senses exploded into clarity. I shook out my coat, a deep, smoky grey with silver tips along my back and tail. Till now, I still couldn't believe I was this big, or this strong. My wolf was basically built for battle.Preya shifted beside me. Her wolf was beautiful but smaller, with a coat the color of autumn leaves, filled with rich brown

PENIELIt wasn’t perfect. I wasn’t a trained warrior so, the move was desperate and clumsy. Something I intended to change when I got back.I shoved him hard, so he went off balance, toward the wall. At the same time, I picked up a big loose rock, said a light prayer that he didn't die and hit him on the head. He slumped to the ground. I didn't wait and inspect whether he was dead. I just turned and ran, not for the gap in the wall, but parallel to it, deeper into the shadows between the sheds. I made a lot of noise, probably alerting some stray guard, but my priority right there was slipping through the narrow gap behind the woodpile and out into the dark forest beyond the perimeter.Guilt choked me as I ran. I had tricked a boy who was only trying to do his job. But I couldn't think about that now.I ran until my lungs burned, following the deer trail I knew would lead north toward the river. The forest was alive with night sounds, but I heard no pursuit. Not yet.I had just crosse

PENIELI needed to think. Now that Luciano knew I was planning to go save my mother myself, he would surely stop me. He would lock me in our room or pobably post a guard at my door. He would watch my every move.I had to move quickly.I went back to the pack house, my head down, pretending to be defeated. I went straight to my room and shut the door. I could already hear Luciano's voice downstairs, barking orders. He was organizing a search party. For my mother, yes, but also to keep me contained. I just knew it.He came up after a while, knocking on the door. “Peniel, can we talk?” I pretended I didn't hear him blocking my ears with the pillows even though my wolf was scratching at the back of my mind to let him in.“I'm sorry,” he begged, but I steeled my heart further, and turned away. He left awhile later when I didn't answer, heaving a defeated sigh. I stood up immediately and headed to my wardrobe, pushing all the colorful clothes to the side. I needed dark clothes. Werewolve

PENIELThe world tilted. I felt the blood drain from my face. "Gone?"My knees buckled. I felt rather than saw the ground rush up to meet me, expecting to hit the hard ground I closed my eyes, except it didnt happen. From the scent, I could tell I was in my mate's arms. Luciano had caught me. I opened my eyes and stared into the worried gaze of my mate. He pulled me into his arms, dragging his gaze to meet Preya’s, “Did you notice anything else?”Preya nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. "There's... there was a note. Nailed to the table."I didn't remember pushing out of Luciano's arms and taking off running. My legs just moved. Preya ran behind me, calling my name, but I couldn't hear her over the roar of the wind in my ears.I got there and nearly wept all over again. The cottage was a wreck. The comfortable chair was overturned. Herbs were scattered across the floor. A cup was shattered. And there, in the center of the small wooden table, was a dagger pinning a piece of rough

PENIELIt was over in seconds. The square was so quiet I could hear the crows in the distant trees.Luciano turned, wiping his hands on a cloth a guard handed to him. I looked out at our pack members. Some of their faces were pale with horror. Some grim with satisfaction. Many of the older warriors would not meet my eyes."I am your Alpha," Luciano said, his voice ringing out. "My word is law. My mate is your Luna. Our strength is in our unity. The next traitor will die slower. The next enemy at our gate will drown in his own blood. This pack does not bend. We break those who try to break us."He took my hand in his. It was cold. I squeezed it, trying to pour my warmth, my certainty into him."Dismissed."The square cleared quickly after the beheading. People hurried away, heads down, not looking at each other. Not looking at me.In my heart, it felt like I was the cause of all this.I stood beside Luciano on the platform, my hand still clenched tightly in his. His skin was cold. His
