Jessica — First Person

I heard it.

I wasn’t trying to listen, but I heard it anyway. Their voices drifted through the hallway crack like a blade cutting too close to my skin.

“Can’t we go and see her?” Liam’s voice, small, pleading.

“She didn’t do anything wrong,” Wilhelmina added, quiet but firm.

Silence.

Then Keagan’s voice.

Cold. Sharp. Unforgiving.

“You will stay far away from her. Do you understand me? You don’t go near Sylvia again. I don’t care what she tells you, or how she looks. Stay. Away.”

It felt like a slap. No, it felt worse.

Because I didn’t even cry this time. I just stood there on the other side of the wall like a ghost, listening to a man I used to love tell my own children—our children—not to come near me. Like I was filth. Like I was the thing that needed to be avoided.

But I didn’t let it break me.

Not this time.

Because I’d already decided something hours ago.

I was done curling into corners and letting the world drag me like trash. I was done watching them rip

Authors POVEmma sat across from Keagan, the live camera blinking red on the console behind him. Her mouth twisted into a smile, still wearing her perfectly contoured face like it could save her now. But the room was quiet—the kids were at Jessica's mother's house. Keagan had made sure of it."You can end this right now," Keagan said, his voice flat. "Or I can let her press charges for attempted murder, kidnapping, identity theft, child fraud—""Stop!" Emma snapped, her face cracking. She turned to Jessica like a demon cornered. "You wanted a confession? Fine. You want to know what I did? I killed her. I burned that house and walked away like she never existed. I forged those kids' birth certificates. I bribed the hospital staff. I made sure those twins would never know their real mother."Jessica stood frozen, lips parted. Her fists trembled at her sides.Emma kept going, her voice a rising screech. "And you know what, Keagan? You didn’t even notice! You were so obsessed with your st

Jessica — First PersonIt was less than twelve hours to the Cannes Awards. Not that I was counting.Okay, fine—we were all counting. Liam had a whiteboard. Wilhelmina drew a ticking time bomb beside the number 12. And every hour that passed, they’d update the board and go, “Operation Vindication in T-minus—”“Eleven hours, thirty-seven minutes, and seventeen seconds,” Liam muttered like a tiny NASA technician, fiddling with his high-tech device.“It’s not Operation Vindication,” I corrected gently, trying not to laugh as I applied mascara to my left eye. “It’s just a simple fact-finding mission.”“It’s revenge,” Wilhelmina said, unapologetically chewing on a stick of licorice like it was a cigar. “Like Batman. But with makeup.”I stared at my reflection.Sylvia Reynolds was gone tonight. The face I painted into the mirror was someone older, bolder—sharp cheekbones, new wig, slightly crooked red lips. I’d contoured the heart right out of my face.I looked like a woman who didn’t know h

Emma – First PersonGod, it was finally happening. The way everyone looked at Jessica now? Disgust. Contempt. Suspicion.Exactly what she deserved. And I? I was the good one now. The one who cared. The one who stayed. The one who stood beside Keagan when everyone else was turning into monsters.I sat cross-legged on the living room rug, surrounded by the toys Jessica always bought but never played with. Liam was sitting nearby, curled into himself like a little sulking mushroom, silent and pale. That stupid mop of dark curls was covering half his face.I tried to coax him. Smiled. Held up a toy truck like it was a sacred offering. “Vroom, vroom,” I said gently. “Come on, sweetie. Don’t be sad.”He didn’t even blink.Spoiled little brat.My smile stretched wider. “You know you’re safe with me now, right? I’d never hurt you. I’m not like her.”Still nothing.Ungrateful little rodent.I reached for his arm to yank him up. I didn’t do it hard. Just firm enough. Just enough to shake him ou

Jessica – First PersonThe second he pulled her into his arms, I ran.I didn’t wait to see what came next. I didn’t want to.I shut my bedroom door so hard the frame rattled, then I collapsed like a pathetic little wreck against the cold floor. My nails dug into the marble as sobs tore out of me—ugly, choking, humiliating sobs that made my throat burn and my eyes swell until I couldn’t breathe. He hugged Emma. Not me.Her.My chest felt cracked open. My lungs refused to work. Every corner of this house felt like it hated me. My babies—Liam, Mina—they hated me too now, didn’t they?He told them.Of course he did.Keagan told them what I did. Poison. Lies. The kind of story you can’t untell, even if it isn’t true.I don’t remember when I passed out. All I know is the crying stopped only because my body gave up. I must’ve drifted off on the floor, still in yesterday’s clothes, eyes swollen, lips dry.And then—“Get up, you pathetic girl.”I snapped awake with a gasp, heart slamming. I sa

Keagan – First PersonI didn’t sleep. Not a second.I sat there all damn night, watching Mina’s little chest rise and fall, her hand wrapped around Liam’s like she knew he was scared too. She didn’t wake up. The doctors said she was fine, that she was resting, but every minute that passed without her eyes fluttering open carved a deeper hole in my chest.Liam had cried himself to sleep. Asked too many questions I wasn’t ready to answer.“Why did Mina fall, Daddy?”“Why was she bleeding?”“Why did she scream like that?”I lied at first. I said she ate something bad.But my son looked me in the eye like he knew I was bullshitting. So I told him the truth.Jessica poisoned her.It fucking shattered me to say it. Watching the belief in his mother flicker and die behind his little eyes. He shook his head at first. Told me it wasn’t true. Said Mommy would never hurt Mina. That Mommy loved them. But I gave him the full story. Everything. From the lunch to the symptoms to the timeline. And he
