ETHAN'S POV

Clara's words hang in the air like a blade suspended mid-swing.

“Who are you?” Lyra stiffens beside her.

The room seems to fall silent all at once. Even the monitors beep slower, or maybe it's my pulse roaring so loudly in my ears it drowns everything else out.

I caught the doctor and the attending nurse, exchanging glances from the corner of my eye. They're scared, but trying not to look it.

Clara's eyes are wide– blank. Her brows furrowed like she's struggling with something deeper than physical pain.

It doesn't feel like deception. But I've been wrong before…

Lyra let's go of her hand slowly. Her face says it all– hurt, betrayal, confusion.

I swallow lightly, jaw locking. “Clara…do you know who you are?”

She blinks again. “Clara? Is that my name?”

Fuck. She was either gone, or playing the part with Oscar-worth precision.

I motion for the doctor to continue working and gently pull Lyra away, but she shrugs out of my grasp. Still, she doesn't make a scene.

The way his voice was unusually low– the smile that he was forcing across his face that didn't meet his eyes– the way his hand laid by his side on the bed kept fidgeting.“Why are you refusing to tell me what you know Dad? First– Amanda ran away. Now– you're lying right to my face.” My voice shakes, tears clogging up in my throat.
