CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

ELOWYN

I watched the alpha run toward the village. My mind throbbed with fear. He was blind. How could he possibly fight these men?

I looked wildly around, then I ran after him. I would not let him enter the battlefield alone. I would go with him. I would make sure he was all right.

The guards ran past me, following the alpha. I chased them down the hallway, the floors vibrating with each step. As I reached the great doors that led outside, strong arms clamped around me and hurled me back.

I opened my mouth to scream, but the man who grabbed me covered my mouth with one hand and pressed his rough breath to my ear. "Not a sound," he hissed. "If you utter one single word, I will push this knife through you and tell everyone the outlanders did it."

The hands dropped. I was turned around roughly. Owen stood in front of me. His beady brown eyes burned with hatred and contempt.

"Now follow me," he said.

He did not wait for me to answer. He turned and slipped through a sid

Chapter FortyKieranThe weight of my father’s voice clung to me long after I left his chambers. His words pressed harder than the pain in my wrist or the gash that cut deep across my back. Weak. That was what he had called me, though not with the word itself. His meaning had been clear enough. If I had been stronger, the scavengers would never have made it past the borders. The thought gnawed at me as I made my way down the corridor. My steps dragged, the hem of my trousers brushing stone, and the silence that followed me was heavier than the chants of the pack. When I reached my chambers, I did not bother to soften my entrance. The door creaked wide, and I called out low, “Where is my Luna?”Her scent hit me first, sharp and familiar, pulling me toward her. She rose from somewhere near the bed, her voice tight with panic. “Kieran.”I turned toward the sound. Her steps came quickly, and then she sucked in a sharp breath. “Goddess, look at you. You’re bleeding all over.”“I am fine,”

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE KIERAN The walk to my father’s chambers was quieter than the one up the mountain. Behind me, the people still chanted, their voices rising with the drums, but I did not turn back.I was limping now, tired and worn out and more than eager to retire to bed.My mind went back to her. To Sabrina. Her scent still clung to my skin, faint beneath the iron tang of blood and the smoke of torches. My body ached with the memory of her pressed against me, the heat of her, and the tightness that had stolen the breath from my lungs. It had been unlike any other night. Copulation with her had felt otherworldly, as though my skin would tear itself open just to hold more of her inside me. The bond between us was pulling tighter and tighter. I could not explain it. I couldn't, even if I tried. The confusion left me restless. My wolf, buried though he was, stirred faintly at the thought of her, like an echo beating against my ribs.I clenched my jaw. Why did it feel this way? Was t

CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT KIERAN The walk back to the palace was harder than I had expected. Now that the adrenaline had dissipated, I was tired and struggled to use my sixth sense as always. My wrist throbbed with each step, swollen and stiff. The cut across my face had dried into a tight line of blood, stinging whenever the night wind blew against it. The wound on my back was the worst. Each breath pulled it open a little more, sending sharp pain down my spine.I growled in anger, wondering why it was taking so long to heal."Well done, Alpha." The voice was unmistakably Varnor's.I stopped and nodded. "When we do what is expected of us, the people are kept alive. And that's what we're all here for. To see our people not just live, but thrive.""You're very correct. I never doubted that you would make a good Alpha," the man said, a note of admiration in his voice. While I had still had my sight, Elder Varnor had been one of the strongest elders in the pack. He had trained me in the anc

I kept my chin high and swallowed them down. You’re an ornament, Elowyn. The words bit into me again, carving pain into my chest. I wrapped my arms around myself and walked. Step after step, my bare feet pressed against the damp stone floor. The silence between Owen and me was sharp, only broken by the echo of his boots. When we reached the passage door, he shoved it open and pushed me forward without care.I stumbled, almost falling, before I caught myself. Brightness spilled into my eyes. I turned quickly, but Owen was gone. The door closed soundlessly behind me, and when I reached out to touch it, it was no door at all. Just a wall.My heart skipped. No one would ever believe where I had just been.I shivered as I wrapped my arms tighter around myself. The flimsy gown Sabrina had give

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVEKIERANThey came at me with their claws and teeth, and this time they were faster, fiercer. An unexpected blow landed on my face, momentarily rendering my features numb. I clutched my cheek and groaned in excruciating pain.A knife landed against my back with a crack, and I felt my own blood splatter across the floor before their victorious snarl reached my ears.In their wolf form they were faster and stronger. They came at me quicker than I could anticipate, their feet barely touching the ground. It was harder to gauge their movement, to predict their next strike. The filthy wolves had found my weakness.I began to run, knowing I needed space and time to gather my strength. They ran after me. I heard my warriors struggle against the sudden surge of the enemy.I heard a knife bite into the body of one of my men and then his loud cry before he hit the ground with a heavy thud. Another painful cry pierced the air as a blade slid through another warrior’s chest. They
