ELOWYN

I looked down at the chains that were still around my ankles and hurried to the door, pushing it open.

“Hey!” I shouted at the backs of the guards trailing behind Sabrina.

They turned to regard me, their expressions cold and unreadable. Even Sabrina herself glanced over her shoulder, her eyes immediately filling with annoyance.

“Please,” I said, lifting the weight of the chains for emphasis. “Take them off. They’re hurting me. They’re impacting my mobility.”

Sabrina rolled her eyes and turned back around, her regal steps never faltering.

“The chains stay on until I say otherwise,” she said coolly to the guards. She didn’t even have to look back to ensure her instructions would be followed.

The guards, who had started toward me, froze and quickly turned again to resume their pace behind her, ignoring me as though I hadn’t spoken at all.

Defeated, I dragged my feet back inside the cramped room assigned to four women. The iron clinked with every step, each sound a reminder of my helplessness. I lowered myself onto the only bed that lacked a pillow, assuming it must be the one left unclaimed. My gaze drifted toward the small window, where the fading light of day poured in.

I thought about everything Sabrina had said.

I had never wronged her. I had given her the gown she demanded. I had never spoken against her. And yet, she treated me like dirt beneath her heel. Why? What kind of hatred could burn so strongly without cause?

My heart sank further as her cruel command replayed in my mind. She wanted me to sleep with Alpha Kieran tonight. She wanted me to carry the burden of her deception, to bear the heir she herself was too afraid to conceive.

But how was I supposed to make her look pregnant when I was going to be the one with child? How was I going to convince people she was pregnant?

And how was I supposed to keep my own condition hidden if I got pregnant?

I couldn’t walk around the palace with a swollen belly, unmarried and unmated. I would be mocked, shamed, called a whore. I would be despised by the entire pack. My stomach churned at the thought.

So what was I going to do? Why was Sabrina punishing me like this? And how, in the goddess’s name, was I supposed to survive tonight? Could I even pretend to be someone else in the alpha’s bed?

I had never before been touched by a man. Was I even going to like it?

The door creaked suddenly and then swung open. A girl about my age stepped inside. She was petite, with skin that had seen too much sun and bright blue eyes that sparkled. She stopped short when she saw me, staring as though she’d found a stranger in her home.

“Are you lost?” she asked, her tone edged with confusion.

I shook my head slowly. “I was brought here by the queen. I’m to stay here until she requires my presence.”

Her eyes widened. “Our Luna?” She stepped further into the room, awe spreading across her face. “You mean the Luna was really here?”

I gave a small nod. I didn’t see anything extraordinary in Sabrina’s visit, not when I knew the sharp cruelty behind her mask.

“Wow.” The girl’s voice dropped to a whisper, her amazement uncontainable. “How does it feel walking with her? Is it true she killed twelve men in a fight all by herself? Is she as strong as the rumors say?”

Her question reminded me of the way Sabrina’s nails had dug into my skin earlier, cruel and merciless, making me cry out in pain.

“She is strong,” I confirmed quietly. “You should never cross her.”

The girl’s eyes grew even wider as she studied me. Her gaze flicked down, landing on the chains still clamped around my ankles.

“Why are you in chains?”

I followed her stare and sighed, shame weighing heavy on me. “The Luna insists I remain in them.”

“But why?” she pressed, frowning.

I shook my head. I couldn’t explain. I couldn’t risk even a hint of Sabrina’s secret slipping from my lips. If anyone discovered what she was plotting, I had no doubt I’d be burnt alive.

“It just has to be this way,” I murmured. “I’ll be fine.”

She seemed to accept that, nodding without pushing further. “My name is Betsy. I work in the palace stalls. I milk the cows and goats, feed them too.”

She stopped and studied me more closely, her bright eyes softening with a touch of pity. Then she lowered her voice. “There are two other maidserants here. Have you met them?

I shook my head at her. “You're the only one I've met so far.”

"You should be careful of the other two servants who stay here. They talk too much. Loudly, too. If you're not careful, they might put you in trouble.”

I nodded understandingly. “Thank you. I’ll be careful.”

Betsy hesitated, her eyes dropping to the chains again. “You know… I could help you with those.”

My heart lurched. “Help… how?”

“I can take them off when you’re in here, and put them back on before the Luna or her guards summon you again.” She smiled faintly, though concern shadowed her expression. “It must hurt, wearing them all the time.”

Her kindness stunned me. “I… I don’t know,” I admitted. “If Sabrina ever found out—”

“She won’t,” Betsy said quickly. “I’ll make sure of it. Trust me.”

For a moment, I hesitated, torn between fear and relief. But the ache in my ankles was unbearable, and the thought of even a few hours without the weight of iron was too tempting. Slowly, I nodded.

“All right,” I whispered.

Her smile widened. “Good. Sit still.”

Betsy knelt before me, her fingers surprisingly deft as she worked the locks. Within moments, the chains clattered softly to the floor. I let out a sharp breath, the sudden freedom making my legs feel light and foreign.

“Better?” she asked, tilting her head, her blue eyes sparkling with warmth.

“Yes,” I said softly, rubbing at the red welts on my skin. “Much better.”

She dusted her hands off and smiled again. “There. We’ll keep this between us. Don’t worry—I’ll put them back before anyone notices.”

“Thank you, Betsy. You're really kind.”

“You're welcome. What are you called?”

“Elowyn. Call me Elowyn.”

CHAPTER TWENTY TWO ELOWYNI held Betsy until her cries subsided and the only sound that came from her was small hiccups. Her trembling had lessened, but she still clung to me like a frightened child. When her body finally relaxed, I guided her gently toward the hay bale. We both sat, the dry straw crackling softly beneath us. Betsy stared miserably into the distance, her eyes unfocused. I stayed beside her in silence. I didn’t know what to say and didn’t know how to offer words that could stitch up the hurt in her heart. All I could do was sit close enough that she would feel less alone.“David has been my only friend,” she whispered after a long silence, her voice low and sad. “If anything happens to him, I’ll never—”“Don’t say that,” I cut in quickly, resting a hand on her back. I could hear the desperation in her voice, and it scared me. “David looks strong. I am sure he’ll be able to keep the enemies off his back. We should continue to beseech the goddess to keep him safe.”“She

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONEAt my words, David turned to regard me, his dark eyes settling on my face with quiet curiosity.“Sorry about that,” he said gently, his voice carrying a natural warmth that immediately softened the air. “And who might you be?”“Her name is Elowyn, and we share the room,” Betsy answered quickly, almost too quickly, before darting toward me. Only then did her eyes land on the spilled drink at our feet.“Oh shoot,” she whispered, her hand flying to her mouth.I bent down, picking up the now empty container, and when I straightened, I turned to give Betsy a knowing stare. She fiddled with the embroidery on her dress, cheeks flushing red as she looked at me apologetically. “So sorry. I guess I was just… a little excited to see David.”“It’s alright,” I murmured, softening my tone. I shifted my attention to the man still standing nearby. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, David.”His lips quirked in the faintest smile. He inclined his head politely. “The pleasure

ELOWYN “I’m so sorry for your loss, Betsy,” I said in a tone I hoped carried the weight of my sympathy.Betsy gave me a sad smile, and even though her eyes glistened with unshed tears, she didn’t let them fall.“It’s fine,” she whispered. “I have made peace with their passing, and I know they are happy wherever they are. Besides, they’ve got each other.”I looked at Betsy, who was staring into the distance, that same small sad smile still resting on her lips. She was so strong for this. Stronger than I thought anyone her age could be.She turned back after a few seconds of silence and asked, “How about you? Why are you serving at the palace?”I looked around, my mouth half open, unsure of how to answer. My throat tightened.Betsy must have misread my hesitation, because she got up quickly. “Take the stool,” she said, gesturing toward the seat she had just vacated. Then she perched herself on a hay bale beside me, arranging her skirts carefully.I eyed her long blue gown. “Are you sur

CHAPTER NINETEENELOWYN Betsy stepped towards one of the goats, and I watched, expecting the white-feathered animal to run away like Papa’s own liked to do.But shockingly, the goat stood still, allowing Betsy to slip her hands between its legs and press its large hanging pink breasts.Betsy had already placed a silver bowl underneath, milking into it. She made it look so easy. But I knew better.“See?” She turned to say to me. “It’s really easy.”I shifted from one foot to the other. “Does that mean I should try?” I asked.Betsy nodded. “You should definitely try.” She grabbed a milking stool and made herself comfortable on it, waiting.I stepped forward, heart pounding as I eyed the goat with suspicion. I could see the goat eyeing me from its periphery.I paused, unsure whether to step forward. Papa’s goat had once kicked me so hard in the shin I had been left limping for days.“Does she make you uncomfortable? You don’t have to milk her today if you’re not in the mood,” Betsy said

ELOWYNI dragged my feet down the hall, dropping my head in shame as a few of the older maidservants passed, looking at me with nothing but disgust.I was still in the short dress from yesterday. And right now, in the bright eyes of the day, I felt utterly ashamed to be caught wearing something like that.I moved really fast, wrapping my arms protectively around my chest to hide what little decency I had left until I got to the room that I'd been assigned yesterday.Thankfully, the room was empty. I looked around the room, taking in the dirty walls that looked like they were in desperate need of paint and the old curtain. The only available bunk yesterday had been the bottom bunk. And thankfully, Betsy was the one who occupied the top bunk.I dropped onto the bunk and wiped the last of my tears away. I quickly removed the indecent dress and pushed my finger through the soft, sheer cotton, ripping it in two.My heart pounded hard in my chest as I looked down at the ripped dress in my h

ELOWYNI woke up to my hair being pulled almost painfully. I opened my mouth to scream in pain, but someone quickly clamped their hand over my mouth, stopping the sound from escaping.I turned desperately towards the bed, determined to cry for help, but the bed was empty. And then I was dragged like a petty prisoner out of the Alpha's bed and into the corridor of his chamber. There she was waiting, her eyes filled with so much rage that if she were a witch, she would have set me ablaze just by looking at me.I looked wildly around for signs of Kieran. Where had the alpha gone? The hand over my mouth dropped, and the sharp tug on my hair finally receded.I turned to glare at the fool who had dragged me, only to realize it was the guard from yesterday. How dare he? When he could have simply tapped me awake?"Why did you—"Smack! A loud slap cut me off mid-sentence. My head snapped to the side, and I held my cheek, tears spilling instantly. The humiliation of being slapped in front of
