ALPHA XAVIER
I got back from Sue's grave, anxious to meet Isabel, and determined to punish her for embarrassing me. Running away from your mate on the day of your mating ceremony speaks volume. It's a public notice that you've rejected your mate and would not be forced into that union.
I was certain that word would have gone out that Dario tried to give his daughter away to acquire military aid and she ran away.
If Eira knows it, then everyone knows about it in all the kingdoms. Yet, something Eira said made me feel she may have been right. I had developed deep affections for Isabel the first time I saw her. Her looks, her innocence, her naivety touched a part of me but then, why did she have to be Dario's daughter?
"Xavier, you have to take it easy. You have that look." Valerian stood before me refusing to give way.
"What look are you talking about?" I looked him in the eye angrily. He just stood there, refusing to back down and refusing to give way either. He held my gaze and it looked more like a staring contest.
His lips gradually curled into a smile, which also triggered mine. "That's what I thought." He shook my hands and hugged him.
"How's she doing? Marita said Alaric and Renata found her."
"Yes, it was a long journey, when they found her, They rode west to get me and Thalia, and we all went north to search for Cedric and Astrid." He pulled me aside so we could have some privacy.
"Thank you, thank you for finding her." Valerian was my most trusted beta, we had grown up together and have saved each other from the cold hands of death countless times. It was me and Valerian before others came, he was one of the strongest werewolves I've ever seen.
We had challenged the last Alpha, Damian, when he became too brutal and corrupt, selling the pack out to the highest bidder and seducing and bedding the mates of pack members.
"Where's she now?"
"She's at a boarding house." He was watching all of me as he spoke. I guess he was searching for clues as to my intention with the girl.
"So, what now?" He finally asked, I guess he didn't like what his mind read of my body language and decided to just ask the question instead.
"What now? It's simple. I'll have her thrown in the dungeon until my mind is made up on what I want to do with her." I was still speaking when Valerian led me to a private quarter where we usually have pack leaders meeting.
"About that, Xavier. Why do you think she ran away in the first place?"
"Well, at first I thought it's because she didn't want to honor her father..." I trailed off, while I tried to wrap my head around it again. Was I letting my emotions override my better judgment?
"But....?" Valerian asked, I guess the doubt was obvious on my face.
"Marita told her just before the mating ceremony that I plan to carry out my revenge on her for Sue." When I was done speaking, I noticed that Valerian was just looking at me. "Well," I shrugged my shoulders, "you know I had an encounter just now while I was at Sue's grave. They killed her for no reason, I'm still trying to figure out who she could have offended? You were there when we discovered that Alpha Damian was in bed with Dario." I suddenly became tired.
"Xavier, if I may." He paused as if deep in thought. "I want to play the role of a devil's advocate. I only got to know you were taking a wife on the eve of your mating ceremony, all you told us when we rode out to honor Dario's Belleteyn festival was that you wanted to explore and have fun. So you can't accuse me of being biased towards her as I didn't even know about her before now, which---" he was still speaking when I cut in.
"What is your point Valerian?" I demanded.
"My point is this, since we found her and all through our way back home. I have been having this nagging feeling that I can't figure out. Isabel is a very beautiful girl, naive and innocent, that much is evident for everyone to see who has eyes."
"You are not making any sense Valerian, you are boring me to death with your long words." I interjected.
"For pet sake Xavier, give me a break. Give her a break. That's all I'm saying!" He yelled.
"Why should I do that?" I asked softly.
"Why shouldn't you, put yourself in her shoes. If you were told your wife-to-be was going to kill you because of something you didn't do, would you really continue with the marriage? The poor girl was probably scared to death and running was the only option on her card since her father chose to sacrifice her to save himself."
"You don't know that!" I yelled back at him but something didn't feel right. "This devil's advocate you are playing at has gone too far. She's my wife and I'll do with her as I see fit."
I was clearly not in the mood to entertain any thoughts that didn't include making her pay for what happened to Sue.
"Once upon a time we're a master strategist that employs stealth in everything he does. Now," he shook his head. "You've allowed revenge to cloud your judgment."
I laughed for a while, "Is that still part of the devil's advocate?" What he had said struck a chord within me.
"No, but it's the truth. Why don't you take some time to get to know this Isabel girl and don't be so bent on revenge. You are probably all she knows." There was something in his voice that suggested something.
Valerian has always been my confidant, I used to be the voice of reasoning while he was the rash one. But, it seemed we traded places ever since Sue died. He became the voice of reasoning while I became vindictive.
"I see," I nodded slowly.
"Xavier, you have that look again." He raised his eyebrow slightly.
"What look?" I was not sure what he was talking about but I knew I was moving the muscles on my face.
"The look you usually wear when your mind's made up and you just want the other person to stay clear of you." I smiled and nodded my head. "In the name of all that is good Xavier, take a break. I don't know why Marita allowed you to go visit Sue in the first place. Whatever happened to Sue is not her fault." He added with a compressed shout.
Whilst he spoke, I pondered on why he was defending Isabel. Coming from some other person I would understand, but why him? Why Valerian? My lips curled into a mischievous smile.
ISABEL POVI didn't know Alpha Xavier was going to come after me. But if he doesn't love me, why did he demand my hands in marriage? I had thought about keeping my duty to my pack and to honor my father, but this was not how I had figured my life would turn out.I didn't expect to be married off to someone I barely even know and worse of all, to have no say in the issue. My father had simply told me that I was to marry Alpha Xavier, when I persisted in knowing why I had to throw my life away. "Is it in the interest of the pack?" He had said and didn't provide any further explanation.I had traveled west of my pack territory, I carried the fastest horse but I was not fast enough. Alpha Xavier's men had caught up with me after two days' ride and went north to pick up other members of their pack that were searching for me.I had questions, I had expected that my father would cancel the mating ceremony since I had gone missing and send members of our pack to find me. I was totally shocked
ALPHA XAVIER POVA mischievous smile played on my lips while I listened to Valerian talk and advocate for Isabel. I could have understood if he had only spoken about it and moved on to other subjects. But he dwelled on the topic, passionately appealing for Isabel's course. "I have a question Val, and I'd be grateful if you answered honestly." A name I usually call him.Valerian looked at me searchingly, I could see the desperation in his eyes as he tried to figure out what was going on in my mind. "Okay, shoot.""What happened out west?"“I don't understand,” he seemed confused, "What are you talking about." "I am saying, what happened all through your journey when you linked up with Alaric and Renata.""Nothing," I noticed he was now a bit unsettled. "You know, you've been all in my face since you returned advocating for Isabel like you've known her your whole life. It makes me wonder if something happened that I don't know of?" I said softly while I watched his every reaction."W
ALPHA DARIO POVThe air in the room seemed very cold when I walked in, but this was not winter, summer was just yesterday. Why was it this flaming cold? "I see you've finally decided to join me." I heard a very beautiful voice and turned to the sound of the voice."Good Morning, good lady." I greeted a very beautiful woman seated in a diner. She seemed very familiar, it was like I've seen a version of her before but couldn't recall where."I like what you've done with the place," a smile played on her lips while she spoke.I looked around, shrugging uneasily. "Do I know you?"She smiled knowingly. "You have become darker in your ways, I've known you my whole life and I would never have thought that you'd become this dark."I looked around and fear gripped me. "You need to get away from me!" I screamed as I felt something pulling me to a seat. And almost immediately, there was a flicker and the scene changed. I was seated, wearing a different set of clothing. The woman still looked ra
ISABEL POV"Thalia, come. Quickly." Marita had entered the boarding house where I was kept and rushed off with Thalia, who was having a conversation with me."Is something wrong?" I called her but Marita shot me a look that shut me up. All alone with my thoughts, I started believing that indeed, there was a possibility of Marita being jealous of me being Alpha Xavier's mate. What becomes of me? I had lots of unanswered questions that I needed to answer. I became worried as darkness approached and there was no word from either Thalia, Marita or even Alpha Xavier. Definitely he sent his men after me, and they must have reported to him that I'd been found. Was he playing some kind of game? Why was he refusing to see me and send for me?I grappled with these thoughts and drifted off to sleep. And had a dream of my mating ceremony, one where I didn't run away. Alpha Xavier was handsome and radiant, it was the best day of my life but soon there was a commotion towards the back of the aren
ALPHA XAVIER POVI watched from the balcony as the women of Wolfshade processed with Isabel around the city and finally arrived at my residence. I looked down and saw Isabel riding a white horse while the rest walked and sang with joy. By the customs and tradition, Isabel is supposed to be the Alpha female and was not even sure what she was. She looked more like an Omega. Marita should be the one riding on that horse, she should be the one standing beside me as I rule Wolfshade.I took a deep sigh, feeling my quest for revenge may have clouded my judgment so much that I took a mate without really thinking it through and its subsequent implications. "She's here." Marita called out from behind me."I can see, I saw the elaborate procession." I turned to face her. "Tell me, was any of this necessary?""You are surely not suggesting that we discard tradition. I'm surprised you were not down there to welcome your mate as expected." She raised an eyebrow looking at me."Yeah, I was busy."
ISABEL POVThe bedchamber that Thalia led me to was the most beautiful I've ever seen in my life. "You are now mated to Alpha Xavier, by our customs and traditions, you are to share his bed until he consummates this mating and then you can decide if you want your own room or not." Thalia comforted me, she seemed genuinely happy for me.The door opened and Marita walked in, "I have informed him that you are here, if you do decide that you want a separate room from Alpha Xavier, there are plenty of well furnished rooms in the castle." Marita had something in her eyes that I couldn't figure out. They had a chat with me, telling me what to do and not what to do. "Have you had sex before?" Marita suddenly asked and my face burned with shame."It's not a bad question," Thalia placed her hand on my shoulders, sensing my discomfort. "You see, we are asking so we can share with you what you need to know." "No, I've never had sex before." I muttered, not daring to look at any of them, somethi
ALPHA XAVIER POVIt was some hours past midnight that I finally had my fill of pleasure, I woke up and found five other females lying on the same bed with me. I tried to remember what had happened, but my memory was failing me.The female to my right looked so beautiful in her sleep, I got her scent and knew it was the wolf girl, Nadaya. To my left was a human I couldn't really recall her name. She was just as wide as Nadaya was last night.I tried to move and saw she was holding on to me, I gently lifted her arm wrapped around me and quickly got up from the bed. "Leaving so soon?" I heard one of the females say and I froze and slowly turned around to see who was up.I waited for the person to speak again, but nothing. I sighed, I guess she was probably sleep talking. "Why are you sneaking out?" The voice said again as I turned to leave. I was sure that was definitely not any form of sleep talking.I turned around again and saw Nadaya now seated on the bed looking at me. "You act like
ISABEL POV"Hey kitten." The handsome looking man said and gently placed a flower in my hair. He was so sweet and charming, he was all I could ever dream of."My lord, I am nothing but your maiden at your service," I curtsied, although what I had said sounded stupid. I had heard Sara tell me a story about how to address Lords and this young man surely looked like a Lord and even dressed like one."I'm no Lord, but I'll be whatever you want me to be, love." He held out his hand and I took it. But soon the scene changed to a ball dance and we were lined up, females facing the males while a makeshift band consisting of a flutist, a harpist, and a singer who was singing a popular tune in allegro that was danceable. All the females lined up had a crown of flowers on their head, each beaming with smile and looking expectantly at the handsome males standing in front of them. "Ready?" The handsome Lord asked softly.I giggled with excitement, I had never had a dance in my entire life and I wa
