Arlo's POV

I paced in circles through my living room, biting my fingers like those were going to be my last meal. Every time I passed the window, I glanced out, hoping to see Lena’s car coming up the road, but all I caught was the dying light spilling across the empty street.

My fists clenched in rage. I couldn’t stop thinking about Ivy, couldn’t stop hoping she’d keep her damn mouth shut, because if she didn’t… I would have to step in and keep it shut for her.

“Stop pacing, man,” Briar muttered from the couch. He was slouched like he hadn’t slept in a week, his eyes swallowed and red. “You’re making it worse.”

I spun on him. “You really have a lot of demands for someone who got us into this mess.”

He lets out a frustrated sigh. “C'mon you know it isn't my fault, it just kinda happened, bad things happen to people too, you know,” he defended.
