LOGINAVIONNA’S POV
For a while after Alpha Fabian spoke, the hall was pin-drop silent. Then as though the spell had broken, murmurs rose. “What did he just say?” “Has Alpha Fabian lost his mind?” “How could he accept her? That’s Elara Vale’s daughter!” “How could this even be?” I held the same questions too. More than anyone in this hall, I wanted to find a reason that explained all of this. It just didn’t make sense that the Moon Goddess had thought it right to make Alpha Fabian my mate. It felt like one huge prank that had been designed for no reason other than to humiliate me. My mind raced through every possible explanation but none of them served as the answers I wanted. The man himself had said he knew who I was. He hadn’t mistaken me for someone else. I found that even more ridiculous. As though he could see the wheels turning in my head, his steel-gray eyes remained fixed on me, completely unaffected by the chaos surrounding us. I swallowed thickly, averting my gaze. “Um, Alpha Fabian… I don’t think this is right. It must be some kind of mistake. Maybe…” “It’s not a mistake,” he cut in firmly. My gaze snapped to him. His expression was still just as impassive as earlier, as though the commotion unfolding around us barely registered with him. “I…I don’t understand,” I stuttered. “My mother…” The words trailed off when his expression darkened. “I know what your mother did, Avionna Vale.” “Then why?” The question stumbled out of me before I could stop it. Why was he accepting me and even asking me to come back with him if he knew who I was? It was illogical, and I knew for a fact that were I to be in his shoes, the last thing I would want was to be mated to my enemy’s daughter. He stared at me for a long minute, then his lips parted. “You’re my mate.” His answer did nothing to resolve the knot inside of me. It only weaved it harder. My wolf however seemed oblivious to the storm that was raging inside. She kept purring, drawn to him by a bond that had already begun tightening around my heart. I couldn’t let it happen. Not again. Not after I’d already learned what happened when I trusted a mate. I had been let down by too many people to trust anyone but myself and I couldn’t allow a repeat of a mistake I already made. Drawing a shaky breath to steady my racing heart, I took a step forward. Gazes diverted in my direction, probably wondering what I intended to do. Alpha Fabian’s eyes narrowed as I exhaled loudly, curling my fists whilst trying to draw strength from whatever I could. “I…” My words faltered and I took in another deep breath. “I reject you…” Gasps rang out immediately, but Alpha Fabian was even faster. He grabbed my hand with a speed I hadn’t expected and growled. “No.” My eyes widened. “What…” “I said no.” His voice was firm and it reverberated through the room. My wolf immediately cowered beneath the weight of his Alpha command. I stared at him in disbelief. “Why are you stopping me?” What reason did he have to? He should want this. He should be doing this. “I won’t let you reject me,” he muttered calmly, almost frighteningly so. I stumbled back, trying to loosen his grip on my wrist but it only tightened. He turned to my Father, regarding him with a look that dared anyone to contest his authority. “I suppose you have no problem with me taking her back with me.” Dad’s face cracked. A nervous, almost cowardly laugh slipped out of him. “Of course not, Alpha Draven. She’s all yours.” My jaw dropped. I had no idea what I was expecting from my Dad but it certainly wasn’t this. The shock however wore off soon enough. I should have known he wouldn’t hesitate to throw me to the dogs. A strange silence followed, as though everyone in the hall was waiting to see what would happen next. Soon after, the murmurs returned. “He’s really taking her?” “After everything that happened?” “Alpha Fabian must have really lost his mind.” I lowered my gaze, unable to bear the weight of so many eyes. If it wasn’t Alpha Fabian standing in front of me, I would have felt relieved that my mate had stopped me from rejecting him but precisely because it was him, I felt trapped instead. Like I’d walked into a hole I couldn’t come out of. The uncertainty behind his intentions frightened me more than anything else and none of the answers he’d given me explained why he was acting the way he was. My gaze drifted across the room, searching for something familiar, and landed on Lucien. He was staring at me, with an expression that was difficult to read, and his jaw was clenched. Our eyes met for a brief second before he looked away. I didn’t know what that was about, and I didn’t care enough to find out. Ivy on the other hand was a different story. Her face had gone pale. She stood beside a brown haired man who I now realised was her husband, a man I’d seen walk in with Alpha Fabian. He looked equally as bewildered as everyone in the room. Ivy’s fingers curled tightly around the fabric of her gown as she stared at Fabian. For once, she had nothing clever to say. I would have smiled if I wasn’t in a predicament myself. Just as I shifted my gaze from her, Fabian turned to me. “We leave tomorrow morning.” My stomach dropped and my mouth gaped. “Tomorrow?” “Yes.” There was no hesitation in his voice. I could see it in his eyes that my opinion didn’t matter. He expected me to comply without question. I swallowed and glanced around the hall, around the place that had once been my home yet had never been kind to me. For a split second, the idea of leaving didn’t seem so bad. I was only scared because I had no idea what life awaited me in Saturn Pack. While I was distracted by my thoughts, Alpha Fabian let go of my wrist, then walked away without a look back, leaving me standing there with a thousand unanswered questions. The wedding continued around me, but I barely noticed. I spent the rest of the evening trapped inside my own thoughts, wondering why a man who should have hated me had chosen to accept me instead. And as the celebration finally came to an end, one question remained louder than all the others. What did Alpha Fabian really want from me?Chapter 52: No rushAVIONNA’S POVMy wolf had done us more harm than good, forgetting that our entire skeleton was made of fragile, aching things. The pain was the first thing I felt the moment I shifted back. It was everywhere, but my shoulders burned the most. The wound there hadn't looked like much in my wolf form but now that I'd shifted back, it hurt like hell.I could see the imprint Cicero's fangs had left behind and my side stung with every breath I took. My leg throbbed badly too and it hurt to keep my weight on it.I'd just gotten injured too, so my healing hadn't kicked in. It wouldn't have hurt so much if I remained in my wolf form, but my wolf had also decided to give up our skin to me so now, I had to bear the brunt of what she'd done to us.However, even as I hurt, I didn't blame her for anything she did. Like me, she had just been ignorant.I could liken her to the woman I was the day I arrived in Saturn Pack. The Avionna of that day had been filled with so much hope a
AVIONNA'S POV Nothing had ever smelled better.A thick, musty musk swarmed my senses. One second, it wafted like the base note of rich forest loam and freshly upturned soil after a heavy autumn rain. The next, it was the undertone of rotten cedar bark and crushed pine needles dried to a crisp. My wolf's anger dissipated immediately. In a twinkle of an eye, it was gone. Everything faded, narrowing into one thin line, into the man practically dripping with the smell. She lifted her head, and gone was the recollection of why she was angry in the first place.Within her, I was lost too, but not because of the scent that had intoxicated her. What I couldn't understand was why she hadn't shown submission.Just like Cicero who was now back in his human form, chest panting heavily, stewing with suppressed animosity and whose face held a thick layer of discontent, I had felt the irrepressible command in Fabian's voice, but unlike Cicero, my wolf seemed completely unaffected by it.She didn't
AVIONNA’S POV‘Stop’A faint, panicked voice, far away, pleaded to stop, think, wait a minute, but she…My wolf didn’t listen. She had taken the reins and all her vision could register was the Beta standing in the doorway, teeth gritted as though he was struggling to contain himself. The smell oozing off him was acrid, like singed hair and the tang of overheated copper born from the rapid rush of adrenaline that his anger had given rise to.He was a threat. And threats needed to be taken out.An inhuman wail, both a yowl and a roar, filled my ears from inside my skull and my spine ripped out of my skin.Pain coursed through me all at once as my body began to turn from the inside out, an explosion of splintering bone and shredding muscle.No. No you can’t. We’re too weak. He’ll shred us to pieces.I tried to call my wolf to order, but she was too far gone to listen to me. My voice had faded to the background of her mind and pure animal instinct had taken over.It was almost as though s
AVIONNA’S POVWhat do you do when there's a male wolf in your doorway, ferocious and angry, yellow eyes fixed on you like he's already decided you're his next target? You run.Did I run? Absolutely not.Following the absolutely tragic ruin that dinner had turned out to be, Zolani led me to her room after fearlessly calling the two grey-faced grown men dimwits, an action I found unfathomably courageous. It wasn't the suicidal bravado of an Omega thinking she could outfight a Beta twice her size either, nor the shallow pride with which Aubrey paraded herself through the Crescent Pack as Lucien's mate. Her courage was of a different kind. It was the fierce, secure confidence of a woman who knew she was cherished, and who knew with absolute certainty that these men would never lay a hand on her.And unlike Zolani, I knew without a sliver of doubt that I wasn't safe in their hands. So when she led me to walk out of the room, I followed but I couldn't help looking over my shoulder to the t
FABIAN’S POVZolani's words struck a place deep in my heart that I had refused to look into for years, buried underneath all the work I threw myself into. The old part of the city needed rebuilding. Trade relations with other regional Packs needed to be established. The Pack’s enforcement needed to be reshaped and restructured, giving average wolves with limited dreams opportunities to aim higher. There was still so much more I could do to develop the commercialization of our Pack. There was always something waiting for my attention. So much needed to be done, and too little had been covered. As long as I kept moving, I didn’t have to stop and think about what I had lost. I couldn’t allow myself to sink deeper into grief when there was an entire Pack depending on me. Their livelihood and sustenance depended on the decisions I made. So, I buried it.I pushed everything I felt into a place far out of reach and refused to look back, not allowing myself to think about it, or feel it exc
FABIAN’S POVI knew Zolani would come even before I heard her footsteps stamping down the hallway.Zolani was the opposite of me. Maybe that was what had drawn Father to her and made him bring the Four year old child covered in dirt with a face darkened by grime, home.I could never forget the look the child with the tear-streaked face had given me when Father instructed that she call me brother. Her pupils had enlarged, shining so brightly they looked like they held all the stars in the sky. With snot running down her nose, and the brightest smile I had ever seen, she had called out to me.“Brother.”And although she was stewing with anger right now, and had nearly gotten into a brawl with Cicero over dinner, and could be so frustrating sometimes, there had never been a day when I stopped loving this sister of mine.Just as the thought surfaced, the door to my study was yanked open and Zolani stormed inside.“You’re unbelievable.”I didn’t look up from the papers on my desk and inste
