LOGINAVELORA
“What do you mean?”
The words barely left my mouth before my entire existence collapsed under its weight.
“You’re not my mate,” he repeated, like that explained everything. I shut my eyes in frustration as I ran my hand through my already disheveled hair.
"you know what...?" I exhaled sharply I'm not even going to ask. " I moved to walk past him but was pulled back.
His hand closed around my wrist. “I’m sorry,” he said, firm. “But you are the best option.”
A broken laugh fell from my lips.
"Oh, because I'm convenient?" I made an air quote, tears burning behind my eyes "Wow, I'm flattered"
"No." he said "Because you are the best option."
That stopped me. "what?" I stared at him, waiting for him to explain, Waiting for the reason he thought justified ruining my life in one night.
I swear, if this was some elaborate prank, I was absolutely poisoning his tea and spitting in his favorite food.
"Because even though you go here, this is the first time I've seen you."
Wow. “I’ve been serving you for two years,” I said quietly, looking down at my feet. “Personally.”
He hesitated, barely apologetic for his words.
"So why me?" I asked and his jaw tightened.
“right now, I need you to pretend to be my mate.” He phrased it like a request but it wasn’t, there was finality in his tone.
“And if I go out there,” I said slowly, “and tell everyone you’re lying?”
He chuckled.
Condescendingly annoying. "who would believe you?" My mouth opened on it own. Disbelief, rage, humiliation clouded my whole existence. “I’ll keep saying it,” I snapped. “I’ll say it until they believe.”
He tilted his head slightly, studying me.
"See?" He said slowly, "that’s exactly why you're the best option." I stared at him like he had finally lost his mind.
"Fuck you." The word felt small compared to what I wanted to say, but it was all I had. For a moment, I wondered if he’d kill me for it.
I closed my eyes, bracing my self but the attack never happened. When I looked at him again, he was just staring at me, not with anger. He looked almost impressed.
"Do you even know my name?" I asked.
He looked away.
Just for a second.
And that gave me the answer I needed. "what is your name? He asked quietly.
"Avelora." I murmured, it wasn't like he was suddenly going to start remembering I existed, why was he asking now?.
“Avelora,” he repeated. The way he said it made my breath catch—soft, careful, like the world wasn’t tumbling on it axis right now.
“You have a pretty name.” My heart betrayed me, stumbling in my chest. “Thank...Thank you,” I whispered, hating myself just a little for how it sounded.
Silence settled between us and then he spoke again, steadier this time. “I won’t force you,” he said. “But if you walk out there and deny it, they won’t punish me.”
He met my eyes.
“They’ll destroy you.” he said, totally unapologetic.
I stared at him, really stared this time, at the Alpha who had just redirected the course of my life while calling it convenient.
Silence stretched before I started laughing at the absurdity of the situation. "So, you're blackmailing me?"
"No." He said "Just explaining a reality we can't go back to change." I folded my arms, grounding myself. If I broke now, I’d never stop breaking.
“You want me to lie,” I said. “Publicly. Repeatedly. In front of every pack.”
“Yes." his voice barely above a whisper.
"And when this lie come back to bite me in the ass?" I tilted my head. "Because it will."
He didn’t hesitate. “I’ll take the blame.” I snorted.
"You wont. You're the Alpha and I'm the scholarship student." His jaw tightened. “Then name your terms.”
That surprised me. I blinked. “What?”
“If you’re going to do this,” he said, voice controlled, “you’re not doing it empty-handed.” I studied him, his face barely giving anything away “You’re serious?" I asked with a chuckle.
“I don’t have time not to be.” The way he made everything sound like it wasn't a problem icks me, everybody will be this nonchalant if they had the whole world revolving around them. I took a deep breath knowing I didn't need to think about what I wanted “You train me.”
His brow furrowed slightly. “What?”
"You're the strongest person in this place, I want proper training." I paused "I don’t want kitchen shifts, I don’t want to observe from afar, every training students like you get."
“That’s not.., ” he started
“And,” I cut in, heart pounding now,
“my scholarship status changes. I stop working. I attend class like everyone else.”
He was quiet for a beat and I decided to push while I still could “You stand beside me publicly. You correct anyone who disrespects me"
“You’re asking for protection.” He reasoned.
“No,” I said. “I’m asking for legitimacy.”
He exhaled slowly, pacing once before stopping in front of me again. “And when all this ends?”
"I'll be strong enough to walk away without getting hurt." His eyes searched my face, like he was reassessing every assumption he’d made about me. “You’re not scared,” he said quietly.
“I am,” I replied. “I’m just not stupid.” He paused again. Then he nodded. "Okay."
Just like that? My stomach flipped. “That was too easy."
He chuckled, taking slow steps toward me while I slowly backed away. "Don't misunderstand," he started "You'll be watched, judged and tested by them."
I met his gaze. “I already am.” my palm flat against his chest to keep him from coming closer.
He glanced down briefly, I quickly removed my hand, something unreadable crossed his face. One more thing,” I added. He raised a brow. “You’re pushing it.”
“I don’t answer to Natalia,” I said flatly. “Ever again.”That one made him still.
"Done.” He said with finality in his tone.
I released a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding. “So,” I said quietly, “what happens now?” He stepped closer, not invading this time, then he took my hand in his.
My heart skipped again.
“Now,” he said, “we walk back out there together.”
"As a lie." I confirmed, looking at the space that was barely between us. He opened the door, the noise flooded back in.
Before we stepped into the chaos, he paused and looked at me again "Avelora?" He called.
“Yes?”
“For what it’s worth,” he said, voice low, “you negotiated better than half my council.”
I smiled despite myself.
I looked down at our intertwined hand, my pulse hammering as the crowd turned to look.
AVELORAThe word made breathable air disappear. MateThe silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the crackle of the fire and the shallow sound of my own breathing. I stood completely frozen, the exhaustion in my muscles entirely forgotten as the world tilted violently. My eyes snapped directly to Khyrix His body was rigid, I waited for him to say something, to deny it. He certainly hasn't said the man was lying. He just stood there, his fists clenching so tightly that the skin over his knuckles looked ready to split. The golden hue in his eyes bled out into the darkness, burning with a mix of hostility and guilt that he couldn’t mask fast enough. He knew. He had known the entire time."Avelora," Khyrix began, his voice dropping into a low rumble as he finally turned his head to look at me. "We are leaving. Now.""No," I whisperedThe betrayal hit me more than anything had. Every piece of the puzzle, every single confusing interaction we’d had since the moment I agree
AVELORASomething was moving in the wall. It wasn't just my mind playing tricks on me, instead of it being footsteps though, it sounded like a massive insect crawling against the wall.I instantly took cover behind the dust ridden desk that stood in the middle of the room. I wasn't hadn't been able to successfully hide behind it yet when Khyrix pulled me by my wrist, he made me stand behind him."Stay where I can see you." He commanded. The creaking against the wall grew stronger, at the same time it felt as if the veins across the book was glowing, pulsing and alive. The sound grew increasingly louder, it was coming from behind the shelf. Then everything suddenly went eerily quiet. My pulse slowed, my hand still wrapped around khyrix's who possessed the terrifying calm of someone who knew they were the apex predator.Crack.I hadn't registered the sound yet before the books on the shelf came tumbling down in a horrifying mess.Khyrix who had been standing close to the shelf with
AVELORAI was excited for information, but definitely not this excited. I didn't think my search for answers would involve being trapped in here, barely able to walk, combing through the exact same set of boring books again. My thighs were still screaming, and every time I bent over to look at a lower shelf, a flash of pain shot straight up my spine.Khyrix, however, didn't seem to be looking through the books. He was searching the library itself."Can you tell me what you are looking for?" I asked, leaning against a table. He didn't answer. He just shook his head, his focus entirely consumed by the wooden paneling of the wall."The suspense is killing me," I muttered, dragging myself a step closer. "And I am literally dying a slow death because I can feel the pain in every single inch of my body. A little communication would be nice."He looked up at me briefly. That unreadable mask had magically slipped back onto his face. Without a word, he went right back to whatever he had been d
AVELORA My throat was burning, my whole body was shaking, and Khyrix had just told me to drop into a squat position and remain there while holding these dumbbells.I was being stubborn. I wasn't ready to apologize, but I would do anything, anything, to leave this torture room.He wasn't even saying much, just being unnecessarily cruel. "I can't get strong in a day," I forced out, almost wheezing."No," he simply said, before straightening my arms and my back.My thighs were going to give out any minute, but I didn't want to collapse in front of him. Weak people weren't supposed to possess pride, but my ego had somehow become way more massive than I initially thought it was."I'm sorry," I choked out, almost inaudible. If this continued, I might die before I actually got to the Blood Moon trials."What did you say?" he asked, even though I was sure he heard me loud and clear."I said I'm sorry, Alpha. I won't make decisions without you," I breathed.Khyrix took his sweet time to walk
AVELORAMy muscles were screaming, a throbbing ache that radiated from my calves all the way up to my shoulders. Sweat dripped from the tip of my nose, splashing onto the floor of the training roomOne more set.One more set.I repeated the mantra, my lungs burning as I pushed myself up from the floor, my arms trembling undermy weight.Across the room, Khyrix watched my every move. He hadn't said a word since we walked in here an hour ago. He didn't need to. The anger radiating off him spoke volumes. He was like a pressure cooker right now and any wrong move, hhe was going to blow up and probably have my head. His dark eyes tracked the line of my spine, the angle of my elbows, and the unsteady rise and fall of my chest with a terrifying intensity. He wanted me to break. I knew he did. He was pushing me through this unrelenting workout hoping I would finally throw my hands up, burst into tears, and beg him to call off the trials. He wanted me to admit that I was just a weak, wolfless g
KHYRIX The door to my room hadn’t even fully clicked shut before the rage I’d been suffocating since the meeting erupted."Are you completely out of your mind?"I spun around to face Avelora. She stilll reeked of anxiety but beneath that was that stubborness that made Torin roar in frustration. I paced the the lenght of the rug, my claws involuntarily pricking against my palms as my hands clenched into tight fists. I was losing my grip on my temper. The thought of her in those woods, flesh torn, blood on the snow, gone forever, was like a reeated violent punch on my gut."I was trying to fix it." Avelora snapped back, crossing her arms over her chest. She looked so small standing against thewall in my room, yet she was standing her ground like she actually stood a chance against the storm brewing inside me. "They won't leave me alone until I did something about it, they wont accept me until I do what they want"I wanted you to keep your mouth shut" I bellowed, the sound vibrating the
AVELORA"I remember now," he began, his voice dropping into a register that made the hairs on my arms stand up."What?" I asked, leaning forward, my heart hammering against my ribs for an entirely different reason now. "What do you remember?""I heard that name during a closed council meeting. Year
