AVELORA

My cheek burned where his hand had struck me. The sting pulsed, the humiliation was overwhelming as I looked around to see eyes everywhere

The guards, pack members, students are frozen in place, watching this horror movie unfold, they were watching me.

I’d known I was no longer invisible the moment I became Alpha Khyrix’s mate.

But this—this was different. This was my father stripping me bare in public, reminding everyone exactly where I came from.

“You cursed thing,” my father snarled, lifting his hand again.

I flinched, instinct taking over. I braced myself for the second

blow

Only it never came.

I looked up, Khyrix stood between us, his hand was locked around my father’s wrist, grip unyielding. He didn't return the same agression that my father carried around, everything about him was controlled, barely anything noticeable.

My heart slammed violently against my chest. “Don’t touch my mate.” everytime I heard the word mate, something in me flipped.

My father’s nostrils flared, his jaw tightened. He ripped his hand free from Khyrix’s grasp. “I’m talking to my daughter.”

“And I,” Khyrix said calmly, “am talking about my mate.”

The crowd had grown.

Behind my father, the Chief Priestess stood with her hands folded neatly in front of her. There was barely any cracks in her facade, she stood there as controlled as Khyrix,  silent, observing, detached as if this were all the confirmation of an outcome she already knew.

“You fucking whore,” my father spat, stepping toward me.

Khyrix moved instantly. I pulled my clammy fingers from his grip. I didn’t want anything to escalate because of me. Not here and especially not now.

“She leaves with me,” my father said coldly. “After you reject her.” The certainty in his voice made my stomach twist.

“No,” Khyrix replied, unimpressed. “She doesn’t.”

The back-and-forth was suffocating and exhausting, I was having back thoughts on accepting the offer Khyrix had, what if I get hurt before I enjoy the benefit of the alliance?

“No one challenges my authority,” Khyrix continued, his voice carrying effortlessly, “especially when it concerns my mate, and the will of the Moon Goddess.”

My father hesitated, eyes flicking between us. Not him nor the others dare challenge the moon goddess, especially not after she was still punishing them.

“I, Khyrix,” he said, louder now “Alpha of the Moonbound Clan, accept the decision the Moon Goddess has made.”

His gaze didn’t waver as it landed on his mother. The Chief Priestess’s eyebrow twitched.

She said nothing, she just looked between us then turned and walked away.

Even my father who was proud, cruel and unyielding had nothing left to say, even though he looked like he was going to burn the world down for being challenged.

He was someone who had always respected hierarchy and moreover, no one can go against Khryix's decision.

“You’ll regret this,” he muttered, finally turning his venom on

me.

Then he left.

And for the first time since his hand struck my face, I breathed.

I almost fell to the floor but Khyrix held me steady. Firm enough to keep me upright

“Stand properly,” he said under his breath.

The words were quiet, but the authority in them made my spine straighten before my mind could argue. My legs still trembled, my body slow to recover from the shock, from the sting still pulsing across my cheek.

“I can stand,” I said, my voice rough.

“Then do so.”

I forced my shoulders back, hating how small I felt beside him. Hating even more that his presence made the crowd keep their distance without him saying another word.

His gaze moved to my face. It lingered on the swelling along my cheek, his expression tightening just slightly before smoothing out again into that same unreadable calm.

“You are injured,” he said.

“I’ve been worse,” I replied automatically.

He didn’t respond immediately. His eyes stayed on me, observant, calculating, like he was measuring more than the mark on my skin.

After a moment, his hand lifted. His fingers hovered near my cheek before stopping, like he reconsidered the contact entirely. Instead, his hand dropped back to his side.

“We need to leave this space,” he said.

"okay." I agreed without questioning him. He just proved that he could protect me. No, he was the first person who ever defended me, alliance or not.

He was too close, the simple touch of his hand against my cheek had my body reacting against my will

"um.." He acted like he wanted to care but barely knows how to. A dry laugh slip out of me before I could stop it. “You’re terrible at comfort.”

“I am not attempting to comfort you.”

“I noticed.”

For the briefest second, the corner of his mouth twitched. It disappeared so quickly I wasn’t sure I’d actually seen it.

"So what is the next step?" I asked as we walked the hallway wrapped in an akward silence. “You will move into the Alpha residence,” he said after a moment.

What? The only resident he has in the school was the massive dorm room they had built specially for him.

AVELORAThe word made breathable air disappear. MateThe silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the crackle of the fire and the shallow sound of my own breathing. I stood completely frozen, the exhaustion in my muscles entirely forgotten as the world tilted violently. My eyes snapped directly to Khyrix His body was rigid, I waited for him to say something, to deny it. He certainly hasn't said the man was lying. He just stood there, his fists clenching so tightly that the skin over his knuckles looked ready to split. The golden hue in his eyes bled out into the darkness, burning with a mix of hostility and guilt that he couldn’t mask fast enough. He knew. He had known the entire time."Avelora," Khyrix began, his voice dropping into a low rumble as he finally turned his head to look at me. "We are leaving. Now.""No," I whisperedThe betrayal hit me more than anything had. Every piece of the puzzle, every single confusing interaction we’d had since the moment I agree

AVELORASomething was moving in the wall. It wasn't just my mind playing tricks on me, instead of it being footsteps though, it sounded like a massive insect crawling against the wall.I instantly took cover behind the dust ridden desk that stood in the middle of the room. I wasn't hadn't been able to successfully hide behind it yet when Khyrix pulled me by my wrist, he made me stand behind him."Stay where I can see you." He commanded. The creaking against the wall grew stronger, at the same time it felt as if the veins across the book was glowing, pulsing and alive. The sound grew increasingly louder, it was coming from behind the shelf. Then everything suddenly went eerily quiet. My pulse slowed, my hand still wrapped around khyrix's who possessed the terrifying calm of someone who knew they were the apex predator.Crack.I hadn't registered the sound yet before the books on the shelf came tumbling down in a horrifying mess.Khyrix who had been standing close to the shelf with

AVELORAI was excited for information, but definitely not this excited. I didn't think my search for answers would involve being trapped in here, barely able to walk, combing through the exact same set of boring books again. My thighs were still screaming, and every time I bent over to look at a lower shelf, a flash of pain shot straight up my spine.Khyrix, however, didn't seem to be looking through the books. He was searching the library itself."Can you tell me what you are looking for?" I asked, leaning against a table. He didn't answer. He just shook his head, his focus entirely consumed by the wooden paneling of the wall."The suspense is killing me," I muttered, dragging myself a step closer. "And I am literally dying a slow death because I can feel the pain in every single inch of my body. A little communication would be nice."He looked up at me briefly. That unreadable mask had magically slipped back onto his face. Without a word, he went right back to whatever he had been d

AVELORA My throat was burning, my whole body was shaking, and Khyrix had just told me to drop into a squat position and remain there while holding these dumbbells.I was being stubborn. I wasn't ready to apologize, but I would do anything, anything, to leave this torture room.He wasn't even saying much, just being unnecessarily cruel. "I can't get strong in a day," I forced out, almost wheezing."No," he simply said, before straightening my arms and my back.My thighs were going to give out any minute, but I didn't want to collapse in front of him. Weak people weren't supposed to possess pride, but my ego had somehow become way more massive than I initially thought it was."I'm sorry," I choked out, almost inaudible. If this continued, I might die before I actually got to the Blood Moon trials."What did you say?" he asked, even though I was sure he heard me loud and clear."I said I'm sorry, Alpha. I won't make decisions without you," I breathed.Khyrix took his sweet time to walk

AVELORAMy muscles were screaming, a throbbing ache that radiated from my calves all the way up to my shoulders. Sweat dripped from the tip of my nose, splashing onto the floor of the training roomOne more set.One more set.I repeated the mantra, my lungs burning as I pushed myself up from the floor, my arms trembling undermy weight.Across the room, Khyrix watched my every move. He hadn't said a word since we walked in here an hour ago. He didn't need to. The anger radiating off him spoke volumes. He was like a pressure cooker right now and any wrong move, hhe was going to blow up and probably have my head. His dark eyes tracked the line of my spine, the angle of my elbows, and the unsteady rise and fall of my chest with a terrifying intensity. He wanted me to break. I knew he did. He was pushing me through this unrelenting workout hoping I would finally throw my hands up, burst into tears, and beg him to call off the trials. He wanted me to admit that I was just a weak, wolfless g

KHYRIX The door to my room hadn’t even fully clicked shut before the rage I’d been suffocating since the meeting erupted."Are you completely out of your mind?"I spun around to face Avelora. She stilll reeked of anxiety but beneath that was that stubborness that made Torin roar in frustration. I paced the the lenght of the rug, my claws involuntarily pricking against my palms as my hands clenched into tight fists. I was losing my grip on my temper. The thought of her in those woods, flesh torn, blood on the snow, gone forever, was like a reeated violent punch on my gut."I was trying to fix it." Avelora snapped back, crossing her arms over her chest. She looked so small standing against thewall in my room, yet she was standing her ground like she actually stood a chance against the storm brewing inside me. "They won't leave me alone until I did something about it, they wont accept me until I do what they want"I wanted you to keep your mouth shut" I bellowed, the sound vibrating the
