AVELORA

Even though I knew what I was getting into, my body still trembled. His hand squeezed mine, almost reassuringly. It did nothing but fray my nerves further.

The music stopped again. This time, instead of keeping quiet like they did before, people had already gathered.

I looked around at the judgmental faces, their attention on our hands as we walked through the crowd that parted like seawater.

Khyrix made his way toward the podium while I followed with my head down.

When we reached it, the elders who were supposed to arrive during the crowning were already there. My thoughts stumbled as I took in their respective faces.

I didn’t need a fortune teller to know what they were going to say, and even though I had prepared myself for this, the elders’ first words broke all confidence.

“No, not her,” one of them said, finality heavy in his tone.

Weren’t we supposed to be somewhere private to hold this conversation? I knew I had to face this humiliation, I just didn’t know it was going to be this public.

My grip tightened around Khyrix’s hand.

“She’s wolfless, bottom-ranked. She can’t keep the alpha blood going. She can’t carry a worthy heir.”

Ouch.

“I expected you knew better. I expected you broke the bond, not walk out hand in hand with” the elder looked at me, eyeing me from head to toe, “her.” His word made me feel smaller.

I suddenly remembered that my dress was soiled and I shrank even more.

“Enough,” one elder said. I recognized him, he had been in the dining room with Khyrix last week when I had gone to serve him.

The elder looked around. “We discuss this in court,” he concluded.

“Zayn,” Khyrix called. As if he had been standing around, Zayn answered immediately. “Prepare the court for a meeting in two hours.”

“Let’s go,” Khyrix urged, pulling me back toward the hallway we came from. We stopped once the door locked.

“Breathe.” That was the first thing Khyrix said to me.

I wasn’t breathing? I let go immediately after he said that, now focusing on my body.

I was trembling and sweaty.

“That was nerve-wracking,” I said after taking a breath.

I started pacing, the actual fear of what I had agreed to finally catching up to me and knocking the breath out of my lungs.

Khyrix stopped me by grabbing me again. I stared at the hand wrapped around my wrist.

“You did well,” he said simply. His attention settled on me and I suddenly felt small.  One of his hands rested on my shoulder, sending jolts of unknown feeling through me.

I took deep breaths as he instructed. “We need to get you presentable enough.” His gaze slowly dropped down my body, and I hugged myself, suddenly self-conscious.

“Okay.”

Everything was a blur after that.

I found myself questioning the decision I made as I sat in front of the mirror. Even if I had said I wasn’t interested in the deal, would he have killed me in there? After all, this was a secret–his secret.

I stared at my reflection as they worked on me. I looked different. I stared at him through the mirror. He looked like the world revolved around him.

His dark hair was pulled into a bun. His dark eyes held boredom, like they always did. And that leather jacket that never seemed to come off him, he looked like he belonged on a magazine.

Everything about him screamed untouchable, even as he leaned against the door. I looked away, breaking eye contact.

“We’re done, Alpha,” the girl announced as they left the room.

He walked toward the mirror, stopping just behind me. He looked almost like he was admiring me, a small smile forming. I kept staring at him, mesmerized by his beauty.

“One thing my mate doesn’t lack is beauty.”

Was that a compliment? He slowly brushed the stray hair that had fallen out of place away from my face.

Each movement had my heart frantic.

“It’s time,” he whispered.

I was about to stand when the door to the room opened.

It opened on its own, with nobody pushing it from behind.

A strange energy filled the room, pinning me on a spot.

AVELORAThe word made breathable air disappear. MateThe silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the crackle of the fire and the shallow sound of my own breathing. I stood completely frozen, the exhaustion in my muscles entirely forgotten as the world tilted violently. My eyes snapped directly to Khyrix His body was rigid, I waited for him to say something, to deny it. He certainly hasn't said the man was lying. He just stood there, his fists clenching so tightly that the skin over his knuckles looked ready to split. The golden hue in his eyes bled out into the darkness, burning with a mix of hostility and guilt that he couldn’t mask fast enough. He knew. He had known the entire time."Avelora," Khyrix began, his voice dropping into a low rumble as he finally turned his head to look at me. "We are leaving. Now.""No," I whisperedThe betrayal hit me more than anything had. Every piece of the puzzle, every single confusing interaction we’d had since the moment I agree

AVELORASomething was moving in the wall. It wasn't just my mind playing tricks on me, instead of it being footsteps though, it sounded like a massive insect crawling against the wall.I instantly took cover behind the dust ridden desk that stood in the middle of the room. I wasn't hadn't been able to successfully hide behind it yet when Khyrix pulled me by my wrist, he made me stand behind him."Stay where I can see you." He commanded. The creaking against the wall grew stronger, at the same time it felt as if the veins across the book was glowing, pulsing and alive. The sound grew increasingly louder, it was coming from behind the shelf. Then everything suddenly went eerily quiet. My pulse slowed, my hand still wrapped around khyrix's who possessed the terrifying calm of someone who knew they were the apex predator.Crack.I hadn't registered the sound yet before the books on the shelf came tumbling down in a horrifying mess.Khyrix who had been standing close to the shelf with

AVELORAI was excited for information, but definitely not this excited. I didn't think my search for answers would involve being trapped in here, barely able to walk, combing through the exact same set of boring books again. My thighs were still screaming, and every time I bent over to look at a lower shelf, a flash of pain shot straight up my spine.Khyrix, however, didn't seem to be looking through the books. He was searching the library itself."Can you tell me what you are looking for?" I asked, leaning against a table. He didn't answer. He just shook his head, his focus entirely consumed by the wooden paneling of the wall."The suspense is killing me," I muttered, dragging myself a step closer. "And I am literally dying a slow death because I can feel the pain in every single inch of my body. A little communication would be nice."He looked up at me briefly. That unreadable mask had magically slipped back onto his face. Without a word, he went right back to whatever he had been d

AVELORA My throat was burning, my whole body was shaking, and Khyrix had just told me to drop into a squat position and remain there while holding these dumbbells.I was being stubborn. I wasn't ready to apologize, but I would do anything, anything, to leave this torture room.He wasn't even saying much, just being unnecessarily cruel. "I can't get strong in a day," I forced out, almost wheezing."No," he simply said, before straightening my arms and my back.My thighs were going to give out any minute, but I didn't want to collapse in front of him. Weak people weren't supposed to possess pride, but my ego had somehow become way more massive than I initially thought it was."I'm sorry," I choked out, almost inaudible. If this continued, I might die before I actually got to the Blood Moon trials."What did you say?" he asked, even though I was sure he heard me loud and clear."I said I'm sorry, Alpha. I won't make decisions without you," I breathed.Khyrix took his sweet time to walk

AVELORAMy muscles were screaming, a throbbing ache that radiated from my calves all the way up to my shoulders. Sweat dripped from the tip of my nose, splashing onto the floor of the training roomOne more set.One more set.I repeated the mantra, my lungs burning as I pushed myself up from the floor, my arms trembling undermy weight.Across the room, Khyrix watched my every move. He hadn't said a word since we walked in here an hour ago. He didn't need to. The anger radiating off him spoke volumes. He was like a pressure cooker right now and any wrong move, hhe was going to blow up and probably have my head. His dark eyes tracked the line of my spine, the angle of my elbows, and the unsteady rise and fall of my chest with a terrifying intensity. He wanted me to break. I knew he did. He was pushing me through this unrelenting workout hoping I would finally throw my hands up, burst into tears, and beg him to call off the trials. He wanted me to admit that I was just a weak, wolfless g

KHYRIX The door to my room hadn’t even fully clicked shut before the rage I’d been suffocating since the meeting erupted."Are you completely out of your mind?"I spun around to face Avelora. She stilll reeked of anxiety but beneath that was that stubborness that made Torin roar in frustration. I paced the the lenght of the rug, my claws involuntarily pricking against my palms as my hands clenched into tight fists. I was losing my grip on my temper. The thought of her in those woods, flesh torn, blood on the snow, gone forever, was like a reeated violent punch on my gut."I was trying to fix it." Avelora snapped back, crossing her arms over her chest. She looked so small standing against thewall in my room, yet she was standing her ground like she actually stood a chance against the storm brewing inside me. "They won't leave me alone until I did something about it, they wont accept me until I do what they want"I wanted you to keep your mouth shut" I bellowed, the sound vibrating the
