CHARLOTTE

The light around me shattered like glass. My scream tore through a world that wasn’t mine as the mirror pulled me deeper and its power coiled around my soul, refusing to let me go. My heart thundered painfully in my chest, every breath scraping like fire.

“Stop, please!” I cried, but the mirror ignored me. It wanted me to see. It wanted me to suffer.

The world around me shifted, colors melting into a scene that was painfully familiar and when I looked closely, it was Jeffrey’s chamber in the palace. The air smelled faintly of cedarwood and spiced wine, his scent.

My heart clenched. “Jeffrey…” I whispered, reaching out. My fingers passed through him like smoke.

He was standing near the long oak table, speaking softly to someone. Then, from the doorway, Emmalaine walked in.

Her gown shimmered like liquid gold, and in her hands was a tray of food. I froze. No. I knew what this was. My stomach turned as dread curled in my gut.

“Jeffrey, don’t eat that,” I whispered, my voice s

CHARLOTTE It had been weeks since I gave birth, and today, I was finally strong enough to go outside. I couldn’t wait to visit my mother, she was still at the hospital recovering, but the thought of seeing her and showing her pictures of Madeline and Kieran filled my heart with warmth.I hummed quietly as I brushed my hair, letting it fall in soft curls over my shoulders. The maids fussed around me, helping me into a cream-colored gown that shimmered faintly when I moved.“Thank you,” I said softly, adjusting the sleeves as I turned toward the mirror. For a long moment, I just looked at myself. My reflection looked… alive again. A soft knock came from the doorframe. Lyra stood there, silent as ever, her silver hair braided neatly down her back. She held her little notepad as usual, her amber eyes gleaming with warmth. She scribbled something quickly and turned the pad toward me.“You look beautiful.”I smiled at her, my heart softening. “Thank you, Lyra. You’re sweet.”She gave a sm

CHARLOTTE “Push, they are almost here! Push!”The doctor’s voice rang in my ears, but it felt distant—like it was coming from the end of a long tunnel. Sweat dripped down my temples, my hair plastered to my face, and every muscle in my body screamed for mercy. Pain tore through me again, sharp and relentless, and I cried out, my hands gripping the sheets until my knuckles turned white.“I can’t, I'm so tired please,” I gasped, tears spilling down my cheeks.“Yes, you can!” Jeffrey’s voice was beside me, firm yet trembling. His hand was wrapped tightly around mine, his thumb stroking the back of it in desperate comfort. “Char, look at me. You’re almost there.”I turned my head weakly, and when my eyes met his, and it gave me the tiniest ounce of strength I needed to keep going.“Again!” the doctor shouted.I screamed as I pushed, my whole body convulsing. The room was filled with the sounds of my cries, the doctor's hurried instructions, and Jeffrey’s whispered encouragements. My ches

CHARLOTTE The path back to the palace seemed endless. Every step I took sent needles of pain shooting through my swollen feet. My legs trembled, and my body screamed for rest, but I couldn’t stop, we still had a long way to go. The relic was pressed tightly against my chest, wrapped in a torn piece of my cloak. I could feel its faint pulse against my skin.I glanced at Kael and the others walking ahead. Their faces were drawn, shadows of exhaustion etched under their eyes. Lyra trailed beside me, her silent presence grounding me. She caught my gaze for a moment and offered a small, reassuring smile before scribbling on her notepad and showing me:“Almost there.”I tried to smile back, though my lips barely moved. “Yeah,” I breathed. “Almost.”But in truth, the palace still felt like a dream miles away. The sun had begun to set, spilling gold and crimson across the horizon, and the cold air of dusk bit at my skin.“Let’s rest here,” Kael said finally, stopping near a fallen tree.No o

CHARLOTTE The relic pulsed in my hands like a living heart. My blood dripped over its jagged edges, seeping into the veins of its crystal surface until the red shimmered with light. The air in the Vault thickened, alive with whispers that clawed at the edges of my mind.I didn’t hesitate. I pressed my wounded palm harder against the relic. The light answered me.It surged up through my arm in a blinding rush—pure, searing fire racing through my veins. My body convulsed under the force, every muscle tightening until I thought my bones would shatter.I screamed, the sound raw and desperate as my knees hit the cold stone floor. The relic’s energy was burning me from the inside out, like molten silver flooding my blood. The world flickered. The voices around me, the ones that weren’t real began to merge with the ones that were.Somewhere far away, I could hear Kael shouting my name.“Charlotte! Stop it! Stop, you’re killing yourself!”But I couldn’t stop. I wouldn’t stop. Jeffrey’s face

CHARLOTTE The forest had grown darker the deeper we went. My legs ached from hours of walking, my shoulders burning under the weight of my pack, but I couldn't afford to stop.Kael trudged ahead, his blade slung across his back, scanning the terrain. Behind me, two of the palace guards carried torches that barely pierced the fog. Lyra followed silently, She looked exhausted, but as always, she didn’t complain.Until she stumbled.A sharp thud echoed behind me, followed by a muffled groan. I spun around instantly.“Lyra!” I rushed to her side and found her on her knees, breathing heavily, her hand clutching the dirt. Her ears twitched weakly. I crouched beside her, concern twisting my chest. “Hey, are you okay?”She reached into the small pouch on her waist, pulling out her slate and a piece of chalk. Her handwriting was shaky when she wrote:“Tired… need rest.”I exhaled softly, guilt pricking me. She was right. We’d been walking nonstop since sunrise. Even I was barely holding up.“
