45. Halo

Maliah’s POV

Mum stared at me with surprise written all over her features. From how she presently watched me, I knew she was shocked that this happened. She had a disappointed look on her face. I knew I had failed her in a way but I certainly didn’t have any choice.

Any normal teenager would have lied about it all, when her mum asked her for the truth. But for mermaids, it was so different. We were highly sincere in whatever we indulged in. This meant lying was like a disease; a plague. We sidestepped it because we weren’t programmed in that way.

It was how we lived, who we were and what defined us.

This was why lying to mum, would have been like a thousand thorns pierced inside my throat. None of our kind ever felt comfortable with being insincere.
