Chapter 1

By the time Roxanne Clark finally came home, a week had passed. She walked in with a large suitcase in tow.

In the past, I would have been at her side in an instant, taking her luggage and fussing over her. But this time, I didn't move.

Leaning against the doorway, Roxanne frowned at me. "Louis, where are my slippers?"

Whenever she came home, I always had her slippers laid out neatly by the door. This time, however, she found me sitting on the couch, eyes fixed on the TV.

"They're in the shoe rack," I replied. "You can get them yourself."

Roxanne's frown deepened at my response. Yet, a moment later, her expression softened as she retrieved her slippers from the shoe rack, slipped them on, and walked over to me.

Then, she glanced at the empty dining table and pouted. "I'm a little hungry. Can you make me something to eat?"

Normally, if she said she was hungry, I'd get up and cook for her, even at 3:00 am. But now, I merely said, "I'm busy. Just order something."

Roxanne sighed, a flash of irritation crossing her face. Still, she slid closer to my side and softened her tone. "Darling, I know that last-minute business trip upset you. I'm sorry. I promise it won't happen again. I even brought you a gift. Will you forgive me this once?"

I kept my eyes on the TV, my voice calm as I answered, "You're overthinking it. I'm not upset."

Roxanne froze for a moment, then frowned despite herself. A beat later, she opened her suitcase and pulled out a plainly wrapped gift. Inside was a necktie.

"Well? Do you like it? I picked it out especially for you!" she said, looking at me expectantly.

Seeing the necktie reminded me of a social media post Conrad Jensen had made three days ago. "Grand Opening Promotion—Receive a complimentary tie with qualifying purchases."

The blue-and-green tie Roxanne was now presenting to me as a carefully chosen gift was the exact same one from that post.

Even then, I didn't let my frustration show. I simply accepted the gift and said evenly, "Thanks. That was thoughtful."

When I said nothing more, surprise flickered across Roxanne's face. "That's it?" she asked.

I grunted in acknowledgment. "What else did you want me to say?"

Roxanne furrowed her brow and slipped her arm through mine. "You're still upset, aren't you? I already explained what happened. Conrad and I just happened to run into each other at the airport, so we grabbed a meal together."

I only nodded. "I know. I'm not upset."

My reaction seemed to catch her completely off guard, and she stared at me in disbelief. "Why aren't you jealous this time?"

"No reason. I guess I finally saw things differently."

Having said that, I rose to my feet, grabbed my jacket, and headed for the door.

Roxanne moved in front of me again, demanding, "Where are you going? And where's my anniversary gift?"

A month earlier, I had purchased a sapphire bracelet at an auction. She had seen the news coverage about it.

To her surprise, I pulled out my phone and transferred her 30 thousand dollars. "I forgot. Just buy whatever you want."

Roxanne fell silent at once. In our five years of marriage, I'd never missed a single holiday or special occasion. Every time, I had carefully picked out her gift.

After a few stunned seconds, she grabbed my arm. "What about the bracelet?"

I sneered and pointed at her wrist. "What bracelet? Aren't you already wearing a matching bracelet with Conrad?"

Almost immediately, embarrassment flashed across her face.

"This…" she began. "He just gave it to me as a friendly gesture. Don't get the wrong idea. I'll take it off right now."

We'd lived together for five years. I knew every one of Roxanne's tells. The way she clutched the hem of her shirt told me exactly how flustered she was.

Since I'd already given up on us, I had no desire to argue with her. I pinched the bridge of my nose and walked away, exhaustion etched across my face.

“Roxanne," I said, "compared to everything you've put me through these past few years, this is nothing."Roxanne's voice trembled as she tried to explain herself. "Louis, I know I made a terrible mistake. But I really do love you. You have to believe me.I couldn't believe after everything that happened, she still had the nerve to tell me she loved me.How ironic. The second the man she'd always loved came back into her life, she chose to betray me. But when she realized she couldn't pay me back, she resorted to empty promises and claims that she loved me.At that point, I wasn't sure there was anything Roxanne wouldn't say or do to get what she wanted. My chest felt heavy. I shook my head, let out a sigh, and walked away. When I stepped outside and looked up at the clear blue sky, it struck me that my five-year marriage was finally over. On my first night in Serovia, Damien had video-called me and asked, "Do you regret it?"I knew exactly what he meant. Fletcher Group was th

Before I left, I instructed security to escort Roxanne out. She had spent the entire night sitting there. As my car passed the security booth, our eyes met. In that moment, I realized that the woman who had once been able to affect my mood with a single look now appeared utterly worn down. Yet, I couldn't bring myself to care. So, this was what it felt like to stop loving someone. …Before my flight took off, I left Roxanne one final gift. I had Alex deliver everything I'd uncovered about Conrad. And that included evidence that after returning to Jenton, he had been involved with two other women. Conrad had always told Roxanne that his marriage had ended because his ex-wife had been unfaithful. In truth, she hadn't been the one who cheated. All along, Conrad had been using Roxanne. He had manipulated her into starting a company for him, bringing in business, and ultimately giving herself to him. I'd spoken with Conrad's ex-wife over a video call. She had provided me with

To make sure I could leave for Serovia on schedule, I was discharged from the hospital on the evening of my sixth day there.Roxanne had told me she had something to take care of and would be arriving later than usual. After I got home, I was so busy packing that I didn't notice my phone lighting up again and again. It wasn't until Roxanne started pounding on the door that I realized how late it had gotten. I opened the door and rolled three large suitcases out in front of her. She stared at the suitcases in disbelief. "What's this supposed to mean?" "I've packed all your clothes. Take them with you," I said coldly. An uneasy look crossed Roxanne's face, and she hesitated before asking, "Y-You went into my walk-in closet?"I scoffed and pointed at the suitcases. "That wooden box of yours is in there too."In five years of marriage, I had never once stepped into her walk-in closet. I never would have guessed she'd keep the box somewhere so obvious.Inside was a yellowed jou

I was in the hospital for three more days. What shocked me was that, over the next two days, Roxanne drove 40 minutes to the hospital just to be with me. Each time, she stayed until the sun went down. Whenever I asked her to leave, she refused. "Louis, I'm doing this because I need you to understand that I really do care about you. I don't want to lose you, and I hope that you'd reconsider moving overseas."I called her crazy and told her she was being unreasonable. Yet, Roxanne continued to do things her own way. To stop her, I asked the hospital to bar her from visiting me. However, the nurses told me that Roxanne hadn't caused any trouble. So, she was free to visit whenever she wanted. I even had two security guards posted outside. When she realized she couldn't get in, she went ahead and called the police. After showing the officers our marriage certificate, Roxanne got little more than a brief warning not to waste police time.By then, I was exhausted. I gave up fight

I wanted everything settled before I left the country, so I had Alex deliver the divorce papers to Roxanne.Yet, the moment she received them, she flew into a rage. Without even glancing at the terms, she tore them to pieces and threw the scraps in my face."Louis Fletcher!" she yelled. "If this is about jealousy, fine. But I have access to a lot of the company's confidential information. If you're really going through with this divorce, you'd better think about the consequences. "We've been married for five years. Not every problem is beyond fixing. Take some time to calm down, then we can talk."Having said her piece, Roxanne walked away without looking back. Watching her storm off, I couldn't help but let out a long sigh. I honestly had no idea why I went after her so hard in the first place.I first met Roxanne on the first day of university. She was standing near the campus entrance in a white dress, looking uncertain. As I walked past, she grabbed my arm and asked if I

When I came to, I was lying in a hospital bed with an IV in my arm. The room's stark white walls seemed painfully bright. Roxanne had fallen asleep beside me, her hand wrapped around mine. The memory of her bloodshot eyes from the night before and the way she'd hurt me sent a shiver down my spine. Still groggy from sleep, Roxanne asked, "How are you feeling? Does anything hurt?"The concern in her voice made me suspicious. She was the one who had left me in this state. And just the day before, she'd made it clear she wouldn't let the matter rest until I explained myself. I shook off her hand and turned away, not wanting to say another word to her. To my surprise, Roxanne smiled. Cupping my face in her hands, she said softly, "Don't be mad. I know I lost it last night and hurt you."I let out a bitter laugh and pushed her hand away once more. Maybe she hadn't even noticed it herself, but the distinctive woody scent of Conrad's cologne still lingered on her clothes. The smel
