Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
After confirming the abortion procedure three days later, I turned away and walked straight into Leonard, who was rushing toward me and out of breath.

"Darling, why did you come out here alone? It's dangerous."

Looking at his anxious face, a question twisted in my mind.

Was he worried about me, or the child I carried?

I forced a bitter smile and stepped out of his reach. "I'm fine."

Leonard's eyes flickered. He had always been the one avoiding me, and I had never once pulled away from him, even though I was the one who suffered through the allergic reactions.

When we got home, Leonard claimed he still had work to finish, yet he knelt down and spoke softly to the baby in my belly.

"Don't kick Mommy, sweetheart. Daddy doesn't want her to hurt."

If this had happened before, I would have been dizzy with happiness, grateful for the child growing inside me, and certain I had a husband who loved me.

Now every word cut like a blade. My heart bled with every syllable.

As always, Leonard brought me a warm glass of milk. His eyes curved with a familiar smile.

"Drink this and get some sleep. I'll be in the study finishing up."

His gentle tone and expression should have been comforting, yet my body trembled.

I didn't resist anymore. I took the glass, pretending nothing was wrong, and drained it in one swallow.

It didn't take long before my eyelids grew unbearably heavy and I slipped into unconsciousness.

Somewhere in the fog of sleep, faint sounds drifted from the study.

A rhythm. A breath. A stifled moan.

"Hannah, don't worry. I'll never touch her. I won't let you feel like I'm dirty.

"And I'll make sure you become the top intern in the entire hospital. With Kayla's help, everything will go smoothly."

I didn't have time to parse the meaning behind his words.

Because something else stunned me first.

Leonard, who famously refused to take female students, had placed his childhood sweetheart at his side to train personally. What did all the late nights, meetings, and endless workload really mean?

It was laughable. The entire world seemed to know, and I had never once doubted him.

A violent tremor shook the wall, and the noise sent our perfect wedding portrait crashing to the ground.

Such a perfect metaphor.

"Kayla, did something happen?"

Leonard's urgent voice suddenly came from the doorway.

He looked worried, but the glistening smear at the corner of his mouth pierced straight through me.

I forced myself to appear calm, as if I had just woken.

"Nothing. I bumped the frame by accident."

He let out a long breath, tugged awkwardly at his rumpled shirt, and quickly turned away.

"I'll go take a shower."

As he disappeared into the bathroom, something compelled me to pick up the phone he had left on the couch.

I unlocked it quickly. Messages filled the screen, one after another, each one tightening around my lungs.

"Leonard, everything's arranged."

"Kayla is now listed as our hospital's latest experimental subject. We'll live stream the entire procedure. Hannah will do the surgery herself, so she's guaranteed to pass her probation."

"Livestreaming is brilliant. Hannah delivering her and Leonard's child on camera will push her to full-time status, and Kayla will blow up online too."

Hannah's sudden attack sent everyone around us into panic.Only I remained calm."A man like him? I stopped wanting him a long time ago. You're the only one who still treats him like treasure."I don't have time to argue with you. Move."Her grip on the knife tightened, her eyes flushing red with agitation."Kayla, stop pretending! If you don't like him, then why fight me for him? Why push him to break my heart?"He ignores me because of you, doesn't he?"A sharp laugh escaped me."Do you think my last five years were easy? The two of you never hesitated when you both were plotting against me."I remembered the first time we met. Hannah had looked at me with thinly veiled contempt. Even then, I sensed she would never let me live in peace. And knowing Leonard, many of the cruel ideas over the years had likely been hers. How could I not hate her?Hannah, however, showed not a shred of remorse. Her smile was wild."Of course I did it on purpose. So what?"I loved watching you

Looking at Leonard standing there so self-righteously, I could hardly recognize the man I once thought I understood. As far as I knew, he and Hannah had been inseparable since childhood. And now, after a short time apart, he claimed he had completely cut her out of his life.To me, that only made him seem even less trustworthy.Hannah was awful, yes, but he was not much better.I let out a sharp, humorless laugh."Leonard, people change. The man I loved back then isn't the man standing in front of me now. And I'm no longer the woman who loved you."Leonard's brow furrowed."You're saying you like someone else?"Before I could reply, Nathan Cross, the attending physician at the sanatorium, stepped out and draped a coat over my shoulders."It's cold today. Don't catch a chill."I gave him a small smile and walked back toward the building with him.Behind us, Leonard snapped. "Kayla, you really fell for someone else? Is that why you faked your death? Is that why you won't forg

I escaped from the launch event by the skin of my teeth and fled to a secluded convalescent facility to recover. The only parting gift I left Leonard was a fabricated corpse convincing enough to keep him searching in vain for the rest of his life. The doctor glanced over my test results and tried to reassure me."If you follow the treatment plan, you'll be able to conceive again."I nodded, calm on the surface, but bitterness pressed hard against my chest.Five years of marriage had turned out to be nothing but a calculated lie.Leonard had been willing to go to such horrifying lengths for his precious childhood sweetheart. There was no future for me with him. Not ever again. After a period of rest, my body slowly regained strength. I never expected to see him again, yet there he was at the entrance of the sanatorium. It took me a few seconds to accept the reality. I walked past him without a word, but Leonard chased me down and grabbed my arm."Kayla, I knew it. I knew yo

The woman at the door was Leonard's mother, Marianne Brooks. She had heard the news of Kayla's death, yet her eyes held no trace of grief."Leonard, didn't you always say you hated Kayla? You begged me more than once to break the engagement between our families."Now that she's dead, shouldn't you feel relieved?"Leonard felt his chest tighten."Mom, how can you say that? Kayla was your daughter-in-law."Marianne scoffed."That woman was born with a freakish condition, allergic to men of all things."She finally got pregnant, and even that ended in a dead fetus."If it weren't for the marriage alliance, I would have allowed you and Hannah to be together long ago."She had disliked Kayla from the beginning.Rumors about her so-called alluring constitution had already ruined her reputation, yet she was also cursed with an allergy that made intimacy impossible. The entire social circle mocked the Carters for marrying such a useless daughter-in-law.Marianne had long been ash

People crowded around as Leonard plugged the flash drive into the computer. The video that appeared showed the corridor at the hospital, the exact moment he and his friends had joked and exposed every truth they had hidden from Kayla for years, humiliating her without restraint.Leonard's expression collapsed. It was his own careless words that had given everything away."So she chose to jump… to retaliate against me?"Before anyone could stop him, he sprinted toward the ambulance."Kayla, why were you so foolish? Why would you use something like this to get back at me?"Answer me!"But Kayla no longer could.Pain surged through him, and he blacked out. When he came again, he was lying in a hospital room. Hannah sat at his bedside."Where's Kayla? Why isn't she here? She should be beside me."The moment he said it, the realization hit him.Kayla had already thrown herself from the building.Hannah's expression hardened in irritation. "You were unconscious for an entire da

The giant screen was broadcasting a scene so horrifying that the entire hall fell still. The camera focused on a lifeless fetus still slick with amniotic fluid, the frame filled with blood.Leonard froze, stunned."What… What happened?"How could a perfectly fine baby…"His knees buckled, and he would have fallen if Hannah hadn't grabbed his arm."Leo, that was our baby. Kayla must have done it on purpose. Did someone tell her the truth?" Hannah demanded, her voice sharp with accusation.Everyone shook their heads."Without Leonard's orders, we wouldn't dare say anything."Leonard, still reeling, didn't bother questioning further. He stumbled toward the operating room. There, on the table, lay a fully formed fetus. Kayla was nowhere in sight. "Kayla… Where is Kayla?"A thought flashed through him. Someone had shouted earlier that there was blood near the window, that someone might have jumped. He rushed to the window. On the floor lay a trail of blood, winding its way tow
