Drew steps aside a smile spreading across his face as he shows me the apartment. I look around the cozy space taking everything in. It’s smaller than I imagined but at this point I would live in a shoe box if it meant being reunited with my brother again. I look at the worn hardwood floors, and the compact kitchenette opening to the living room where faded curtains hang and I smile to myself. I turn to Drew, my face lighting up with excitement. "It's perfect, D!" I launch myself into his arms for a tight hug and he chuckles as he wraps his own around me. "I know it's small, but it's what I can afford right now.” He says and I can hear the apology in his voice. I know the sacrifices Drew has already made just so that I could move in with him. He’s only twenty, juggling two jobs all while attending college and now he has taken on the responsibility of taking care of me. It’s more than I can ask for and I can’t even begin to let him know how much I appreciate him. “I love it, Drew. Really.” I tell him squeezing his hand so that he knows I’m being sincere. Just then, we hear a groan echo from the back of the room. “Mia! This box is freaking heavy! Where do you want it?" Hayden asks as he comes in stumbling slightly, struggling to manage a bulky box filled with my books. I quickly let go of Drew and rush over to help Hayden, my hands grasping for the box. “Hey, careful with those!" I warn as I help him set it down gently on the floor. “These are my babies!” Hayden let’s out a breath and shakes his head at me. “Could you be any more of a nerd?” I grin at him and hit him playfully. “Mia seriously, how much stuff do you own!” Scott groans dramatically as he walks in with my pink purse slung awkwardly across his shoulder, dragging my suitcase behind him. I fight the urge to laugh at the sight of him wearing one of my pink hats, dangling a pair of my heels in his other hand. Hayden, never one to miss an opportunity, strolls over and adjusts the hat on Scott's head, teasing, "Aw, don't you look like a pretty little princess?" Drew takes out his phone and snaps a quick photo while Hayden makes a peace sign. Tom just dead pans as the flash goes off. "Screw all of you.” I chuckle and hurry over to help Scott. "Thanks, Scotty, I think that's about it," I say placing a kiss on his cheek. “Gosh, I can’t believe you’re gonna be our new housemate.” Hayden says brushing his blonde hair out of his face as he pushes another of my boxed up stuff towards my new room. To be honest, I can’t believe it either. I never imagined I’d get this taste of freedom before I turned eighteen but here I am. "Alright, listen up!" Drew announces going to stand on the couch, his eyes narrow as he stares down Hayden and Scott. “I have some rules." Scott and Hayden groaned in unison and I can tell Drew is about to go into overprotective big brother mode. "Mia's officially living here and taking over my room, so all you idiots need to learn how to act with a girl living in the house now!" Drew yells. I know me being here will be quite the adjustment considering how it’s been an all boys house until my arrival. “Y’all need to learn how to keep it down. It’s Mia’s senior year and she needs to focus. Number two, Mia’s only seventeen so let’s keep it PG. I’m talking to you Hayden.“ “What’s that supposed to mean?” Hayden protests. “It means no more one night stands,” Scott hits him and chuckles. “At least not here.” Hayden looks dejected but before he can protest Drew continues; “and number 3, no leaving your drawers all over the freaking place!” “I second that!” I speak raising my hands earnestly. Scott attacks me in a hug, playfully messing up my hair. “Don’t worry, M, we’ll be the perfect gentlemen for our little princess.” He said with a smile as I pushed him away. "Yeah, you'll totally love it here, M. And I promise to leave the toilet seat down." Hayden chimed in holding up a hand in a scout’s honour gesture I can’t help but smile. Only days ago, I was living in my own personal hell with my dad but now my older brother had custody of me and I’m going to be living with him and his best friends who have known me long enough to be like brothers to me as well. It feels good, like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I know I’ll be safe here. Way safer than I was at home anyway. “Thank you guys.” I say, “really, it means a lot that you’re all taking me in.” Drew gives me a sad smile. He knows what I’ve been through. How hard it was for me back home. He walks over and gives me a hug, kissing my forehead. “Don’t worry, M, you’re safe here.” He reassures me, his voice gentle and protective. Scott, places a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Yeah, no one's touching you with us around.” I feel tears prick at my eyes touched by their words. Before I can process the emotions swirling inside me, Hayden's booming voice cuts through the air. "Group hug!" he yells, and in an instant, his large frame envelops us in a massive bear hug. "Hayden, can't breathe!" Drew groans, his voice muffled by Hayden's grip. But Hayden just chuckles, his deep voice rumbling. "Just embrace it and feel the love, brother!" I laugh, feeling a sense of belonging wash over me. In this moment, surrounded by by my brother and his friends, I realize I might have just found the family I've always wanted.I always imagined that after a tornado, it would be silent, still… That you would get to go outside again and examine the damages, see what was left. I turned to Kaden as he drove into the parking lot of my apartment building with one thought; this tornado had completely unravelled everything. He found a parking spot and turned off the engine before turning to look at me. I watched him as well feeling a sense of confusion for what all this was. I knew I should be staying away, admitting kissing him was a mistake and running the other way. But instead I just wanted to be closer to him. To become entangled with him and never escape. That’s how in deep I was. “Dang it.” I spoke. He rose his brows in amusement and I realised I had said that out loud. I shut my eyes tightly for a second before opening them again. “We shouldn’t have done that, should we?” I asked as I unbuckled my seat belt and ran a hand through my hair wondering how messed up it looked after that make out sessi
“You okay?” Kaden’s voice came from beside me.“Gimmie a sec.” I spoke as I held an icy cold water bottle to me head.I was leaning against Kaden’s car with my eyes shut trying to force my nervous system to come back to earth and convince it that we weren’t in danger anymore.I opened my eyes and lowered the bottle, letting out a breath as I turned to face Kaden.“Remind me never to do that again.” I told him raising an accusatory finger at him.He chuckled as he took the bottle away from me and opened it before handing it back.“Drink some of that.” He instructed.I eyed the bottle cautiously before taking it away from him.“I will. But not because you told me to. Because I want to.” I spoke stubbornly as I took a selfish gulp not knowing how thirsty thinking you were going to die could make you.Kaden let out a quiet laugh as he wiped his hands on his pants and ducked into his car to bring out a jacket.“You look cold.” He commented as he held it out to me.I stared at the clothing
“Mia?” Branson asked in confusion. He then turned to look in the direction I was staring. What I had thought was a ghost was heading right in our direction, determination in his eyes.I swallowed hard.“Mia?” Branson asked again, this time more cautiously with an edge to his voice and I knew he was waiting for my cue on what to do next.“I uhm,” I stumbled back slightly. “I have to -“I didn’t even finish my sentence before I was basically jogging through the crowd immediately fleeing. It was only when I bumped into a clown like man that I stopped for a second to wonder why the hell I was even running.I didn’t have anything to be embarrassed by or ashamed of.In fact, what was Kaden even doing here? How dare he think it was okay to even come here where I would be and - and give me that look. Like I had been cheating. We weren’t anything to each other. That was evident. So why was my heart racing and why did I feel so confused that I could scream.“Mia!” His voice tore through the cro
“Branson better give us a cut of his funds for basically being his groupie fan girls.” Rochelle spoke as she straightened out her Flaming Roses t-shirt.I laughed as I tied my own to the side so that it wouldn’t cover the black tennis skirt I had opted to wear today,Drew had given me one look at asked who I was getting all dressed up for.Because apparently to him, wearing a cute skirt and curling my hair in the morning necessitated a new boy I was giving attention. But I guess he wasn’t entirely wrong this time. Gosh I hated admitting this.Seeing Kaden with that gorgeous blonde last night completely rewired my brain.I had gone from mourning him to being more heart broken to being angry and now, I think I had reached the acceptance stage. So Kaden was with someone new, that shouldn’t have mattered. Him and I were done. But I guess while I had been hang up on him, he had no problem moving on.“‘Mia? You good?” Amy asked as she straightened her glasses.I looked down and realised I h
A few minutes later we were parked outside the club.“We’ll be back in a few.” Scott spoke as he and Hayden got out.He came over to the window where I sat. “You sure you’ll be okay?”I nodded at him even though just being here made me feel tense. But I wasn’t going to go in there and increase the risk of seeing Kaden.Scott nodded not looking convinced but accepting it anyway. “Call me incase of anything.” He spoke firmly before turning to head in with Hayden.I picked up my phone and plugged in my ear buds trying to distract myself. At that moment a message popped up.It was a YouTube link from Branson.Branson: http//www.youtube-flamingroses.comBranson: incase you wanted to brush up on a few of our classics before the carnival.Branson: p.s if you hate it, I’ll cryI smiled to myself as I opened up the video. There were four guys in a garage. Branson was the only one I recognised walking up to the centre microphone with a red guitar in his hands. He smirked at the camera.“This on
“Oh my goodness! This looks freaking amazing!” Branson yelled as he stood back to admire the photo booth. I walked up to join him, paint on my hands and in my hair. My fingers also ached and I was pretty sure I had gotten about fifteen paper cuts alone today. But Branson was right, the set up looked great and was definitely giving old Hollywood glamour with the red curtain back drop and twinkly white lights. Branson straightened out the camera on the tripod stand. “Now all we have to do is make sure no one breaks anything.” He spoke. I started piling the leftover materials in a box. “Well it is a bunch of hormone crazed teenagers, I think that’s asking for too much.” He chuckled as he walked up to me helping me clean up. Everyone else on the committee had bailed on us leaving Branson and I to finish everything up. It wasn’t really a hustle. I liked keeping my mind and hands busy these days. And being around Branson made that easier. He was laid back and not to mention, funny.
