Drew steps aside a smile spreading across his face as he shows me the apartment. I look around the cozy space taking everything in. It’s smaller than I imagined but at this point I would live in a shoe box if it meant being reunited with my brother again. I look at the worn hardwood floors, and the compact kitchenette opening to the living room where faded curtains hang and I smile to myself. I turn to Drew, my face lighting up with excitement. "It's perfect, D!" I launch myself into his arms for a tight hug and he chuckles as he wraps his own around me. "I know it's small, but it's what I can afford right now.” He says and I can hear the apology in his voice. I know the sacrifices Drew has already made just so that I could move in with him. He’s only twenty, juggling two jobs all while attending college and now he has taken on the responsibility of taking care of me. It’s more than I can ask for and I can’t even begin to let him know how much I appreciate him. “I love it, Drew. Really.” I tell him squeezing his hand so that he knows I’m being sincere. Just then, we hear a groan echo from the back of the room. “Mia! This box is freaking heavy! Where do you want it?" Hayden asks as he comes in stumbling slightly, struggling to manage a bulky box filled with my books. I quickly let go of Drew and rush over to help Hayden, my hands grasping for the box. “Hey, careful with those!" I warn as I help him set it down gently on the floor. “These are my babies!” Hayden let’s out a breath and shakes his head at me. “Could you be any more of a nerd?” I grin at him and hit him playfully. “Mia seriously, how much stuff do you own!” Scott groans dramatically as he walks in with my pink purse slung awkwardly across his shoulder, dragging my suitcase behind him. I fight the urge to laugh at the sight of him wearing one of my pink hats, dangling a pair of my heels in his other hand. Hayden, never one to miss an opportunity, strolls over and adjusts the hat on Scott's head, teasing, "Aw, don't you look like a pretty little princess?" Drew takes out his phone and snaps a quick photo while Hayden makes a peace sign. Tom just dead pans as the flash goes off. "Screw all of you.” I chuckle and hurry over to help Scott. "Thanks, Scotty, I think that's about it," I say placing a kiss on his cheek. “Gosh, I can’t believe you’re gonna be our new housemate.” Hayden says brushing his blonde hair out of his face as he pushes another of my boxed up stuff towards my new room. To be honest, I can’t believe it either. I never imagined I’d get this taste of freedom before I turned eighteen but here I am. "Alright, listen up!" Drew announces going to stand on the couch, his eyes narrow as he stares down Hayden and Scott. “I have some rules." Scott and Hayden groaned in unison and I can tell Drew is about to go into overprotective big brother mode. "Mia's officially living here and taking over my room, so all you idiots need to learn how to act with a girl living in the house now!" Drew yells. I know me being here will be quite the adjustment considering how it’s been an all boys house until my arrival. “Y’all need to learn how to keep it down. It’s Mia’s senior year and she needs to focus. Number two, Mia’s only seventeen so let’s keep it PG. I’m talking to you Hayden.“ “What’s that supposed to mean?” Hayden protests. “It means no more one night stands,” Scott hits him and chuckles. “At least not here.” Hayden looks dejected but before he can protest Drew continues; “and number 3, no leaving your drawers all over the freaking place!” “I second that!” I speak raising my hands earnestly. Scott attacks me in a hug, playfully messing up my hair. “Don’t worry, M, we’ll be the perfect gentlemen for our little princess.” He said with a smile as I pushed him away. "Yeah, you'll totally love it here, M. And I promise to leave the toilet seat down." Hayden chimed in holding up a hand in a scout’s honour gesture I can’t help but smile. Only days ago, I was living in my own personal hell with my dad but now my older brother had custody of me and I’m going to be living with him and his best friends who have known me long enough to be like brothers to me as well. It feels good, like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I know I’ll be safe here. Way safer than I was at home anyway. “Thank you guys.” I say, “really, it means a lot that you’re all taking me in.” Drew gives me a sad smile. He knows what I’ve been through. How hard it was for me back home. He walks over and gives me a hug, kissing my forehead. “Don’t worry, M, you’re safe here.” He reassures me, his voice gentle and protective. Scott, places a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Yeah, no one's touching you with us around.” I feel tears prick at my eyes touched by their words. Before I can process the emotions swirling inside me, Hayden's booming voice cuts through the air. "Group hug!" he yells, and in an instant, his large frame envelops us in a massive bear hug. "Hayden, can't breathe!" Drew groans, his voice muffled by Hayden's grip. But Hayden just chuckles, his deep voice rumbling. "Just embrace it and feel the love, brother!" I laugh, feeling a sense of belonging wash over me. In this moment, surrounded by by my brother and his friends, I realize I might have just found the family I've always wanted.I looked around Shark's house. I don't know what I had been expecting. Weapons all around. Heavy metal posters on the wall? A lot of black. But it was actually painfully normal and plain. Like the house of a typical college aged single guy I guess. It was quite small. Or maybe I was just comparing it to Kaden's mansion. It was a studio apartment set up. A hastily made bed sat in the corner with a simple bedside table and a lamp by the side. I spotted a journal there and couldn't exactly picture Shark sitting down and jotting down his thoughts. There was an open concept kitchen with grey counter tops and a few dishes in the sink. A lone grey couch sat in front of a TV and there were three more doors. One I assumed must have led to a bathroom. I hesitated by the door as Shark casually walked in like I wasn't even there. "You gonna stand there all day?" He asked as he plopped down on his bed. I closed the door behind me wondering what Drew would say about me being in
I really should write a book on how I get myself into such situations. I wanted to slam my head onto the dashboard and maybe wake up when this disturbing and scary dream ended. But alas, I was stuck in this reality where I had just run away from my boyfriend's house which just got shot up with his mortal enemy. And did I mention my hand hurt like hell? I looked down seeing three tiny glass pieces lodged in there. Probably from my broken phone screen. Oh yeah, on top of all that, I broke my phone! I looked to the side and Shark was looking ahead focusing on the road. I sighed. He drove a black Jeep that admittedly smelled really good. "Can we go back now?" I asked with a sigh. Shark didn't even turn to look at me. "Do you want to get arrested?" I huffed. The police had started heading in the direction of Kaden's house just as we were going down the road. Kaden... I can't believe I just left him. What if he had gotten arrested? "I need to make sure Kaden's okay." Shark scof
I tried to keep my tears from falling out as I pushed through groups of people trying to make my way out of the house. Suddenly everything was too loud, too overstimulating and I felt like I was going to shatter. When the hell was I going to stop with all this back and forth when it came to Kaden? All I wanted was for him to let me in and he just constantly did the opposite. Everytime I thought we were making progress, like him letting me come to this party, it all turned into something else. Something completely different and then we were back to square one all over again. Oomph. I felt myself bump into something hard. Correction, someone. I looked up and saw Shark's blue eyes looking down at me. Great, just great. He studied me, placing his hands on my shoulders to steady me. "Leaving so soon?" He asked sounding smug. I rolled my eyes and stepped away from his hold. "Yes, so if you don't mind." I spoke impatiently waiting for him to get out of my way. He smir
Kaden clenched his fists and rose abruptly. Dylan followed soon after along with another guy trying to hold him back. "Whoa, whoa, whoa!" All the while Shark remained seated looking amused by the chaos he had just caused. He looked at me and smirked. "Boys, boys, boys. Let's save the fighting for the ring shall we?" Dylan spoke. He leaned into Kaden's ear and whispered something. Kaden let out a huff and pulled away. I got up to try and talk to him but he just stormed off. Well great. Dylan pinched the bridge of his nose looking frustrated. He then turned his attention to me. His eyes darkening. "Well? Go after him. Fix the problem you created." Dylan turned back to the table. I turned and saw Shark smirking as they handed him some cards. I shot him an open glare before rushing in the direction Kaden had left. Navigating this huge house was difficult enough when it wasn't this packed during the day. But pushing through all these people with the loud music a
“Ssh… we’re witnessing history in the making.” “What?” I was filled with utter confusion as I walked into the apartment and found Hayden camped out on the couch with his face basically pressed against the window, his eyes fixed intently on something outside. I exchanged a bewildered glance with
What in the world was I thinking? I had no idea what Silver had meant when she said we should, ‘go have some fun’. And quite frankly, I hadn’t known what to expect yet I had gotten into a car with essentially, a stranger without a clue on where he would take me. Kaden’s car slowed down before
“Once again, Drew’s gonna kill you for bringing me here.” I spoke in a small voice as I followed behind Scott into the now familiar dingy and loud basement.Scott was holding my hand, his eyes set ahead of him.“Drew can kiss my ass. You’re my little sister too and there’s no way I was gonna leave
