“You know you’re like the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen?”

I smile up at my boyfriend, Marshall, as I lean against my locker holding my books to my chest enjoying his low and sweet voice. I know we look like a cliche high couple with our stance but I don’t really care as he tucks some of my dark hair behind my ear and butterflies fill my stomach.

I blush, feeling a flutter in my chest. "You're the sweetest, Marshall," I gush standing on my tip toes as I place a my lips on his his.

He wraps his arm around my waist, pulling me in close and the world around us melts away, feeling like it’s just the two of us in a dreamy reverie.

Just as we we’re getting lost in the moment, Mr. Smith, one of our teachers, snaps at us. "Hey! None of that in the halls!"

Marshall pulls away abruptly and chuckles raising a hand in a wave and Mr Smith.

"My bad, Mr S!” he says with one of his charming boyish grins.

He takes my hand and we start walking down the hallway.

I know our fellow students are staring. They always stare. The attention is nothing new. Marshall is the cute and popular star quarterback, and I’m the shy, awkward girl he'd somehow chosen to date.

Before Marshall, I'd struggled to make friends, largely due to my complicated home life. My father's abusive behavior made it impossible to invite people over, and explaining the situation to potential friends was a another task on its own. But with Marshall by my side, I'd been miraculously welcomed into his friend group.

“Hey, if it isn’t the cutest couple at our school!” Brooke pipes up from the outdoor benches where her and Marshall’s other friends are seated.

The table is full of the popular kids, some cheerleaders and football players. The ones who pretty much run the school.

Brooke is sucking on a lollipop and has her legs casually draped over Chad, Marshall’s best friend.

She’s definitely one of the prettiest girls at school with her long blonde hair and slim out glass figure, all the boys pretty much drool over her and all the girls want to be her friend.

"I know, right," Marshall said proudly, placing a kiss on my cheek before going to greet his friends.

Rachel, another bubbly redheaded cheerleader, caught my eye, her sly smile and gaze lingering on my outfit. "Mia, you look really pretty today.” She says, her tone dripping with insincerity as she shares a look with Brooke.

I immediately feel self conscious in my thrifted outfit. It’s really all I can afford but most of the girls don’t really get that all coming from richer families.

I pull my denim jacket closer trying to hide the slightly faded floral dress underneath, and muttered a quiet "thank you."

Marshall returns to my side, wrapping his arm around my waist, and I felt a sense of relief wash over me at his presence.

“Hey, babe, can I pick you up tonight for my party tonight?” He asks, his words tickling my ear.

I shiver at his words.

“Mia never comes out for parties. She’s so lame.” Brooke speaks with a pout. her voice laced with judgment and mocking.

I feel a surge of defensiveness rise in me but I force myself to remain calm. It’s not like she would understand that my dad would literally lock me in doors every Friday night just so that I couldn’t go anywhere.

I shudder at the memory forcing it away into a little box where it can’t haunt me anymore.

Marshall rubs my arm comfortingly. He has no idea about what I endured all these years but his always been so sweet and understanding about me always bailing on our plans.

“Actually? I’ll be there.” I speak proud for once that I’m not a prisoner in my own home anymore.

The satisfaction I feel when Brooke’s face drops is enough for me to forget her rudeness.

Rachel pipes up in excitement. "So fun! We all totally need to make the most of this year. We'll never be seniors in high school again after all!"

I turned to Marshall, who raised his brows looking pleasantly surprised. "You're actually coming tonight?" he asks.

I’m not offended by his shock considering how many excuses I’ve had to come up with to explain why I bail so much.

I shrug. “I just have to ask Drew but I’m sure he’ll be cool with it.” After all, Drew, Hayden and Scott were always disappearing for parties at night.

Surely they wouldn’t care if I went for one myself. And Brooke was right, I had been miserable and silently suffering for too long. I deserved a good year of just being a normal teen with my boyfriend.

Marshall gave me a dimpled smile and buried his face into my neck. “Can’t wait babe, you know maybe when you get there, we can sneak off and have some… you know? Private time?”

I’m suddenly more aware of Marshall’s body so close to mine and my face heats up.

He’s whispering so I know none of our friends can hear but I’m still flushed and embarrassed.

I swallow hard fighting my nerves. Marshall and I haven’t slept together yet. I know he has been with other girls but I’m still a virgin. And to be honest I’ve always wanted to save myself for someone special.

It took me some time to realise that that person might actually be Marshall. I mean of all the pretty and popular girls he could have chosen to be with he chose me. No matter how much I flaked on him and kept my home life away from him he stuck by me so I kind of owed this much to him.

“I can’t wait, babe.” I tell him even though nerves eat at me.

“Marshall, we gotta get to practice!” Chad calls as him and the other players start to rise.

Marshall turns to me.

“I’ll pick you up at 7.” He tells me before kissing me. Before he can pull away he gives me a wary look. “Drew won’t kick my ass when I show up at his apartment, right?”

I give Marshall a confused look. “Why would he kick your ass?”

Marshall cocks his head to the side.

“Mia, you do know your brother hates me, right?”

I furrow my brows and place my hands on his face. “Don’t be ridiculous, Drew doesn’t hate you.”

“What do you think about this one?” I asked as I stepped out of the dressing room, doing a little twirl.“That’s definitely the one.” Kaden spoke in a mumble, his eyes fixed on his phone.I frowned and marched up to Kaden snatching his phone from his hands.“You’re not even looking at me!” I whined. He gave me a small smile like he found my childishness cute.He leaned back in the love seat he had been planted in for almost two hours now as I had been searching for the perfect dress.“That’s because you look perfect in everything, babe.” He spoke so casually and easily, like it’s all he had ever called me.His eyes suddenly shifted to roam my body examining my dress and I suddenly felt self concious even though I had just been begging for his attention. He sat up straight. “You do look perfect, Mia.” He spoke genuinely.I felt my face heat up and I fiddled with my fingers as I looked anywhere except at his perfect face. Never in my life did I think a guy like Kaden would find me attra

I furrowed my brows as I sat up straight. “Who?” Drew was clearly fighting his irritation. “Kaden.” My heart skipped a beat and I hated myself for having that reaction. I turned to look at Keri and she gave me a soft smile. “I can gladly tell him to get lost.” Drew spoke. “Drew.” Keri scolded. She looked at me. “It’s entirely up to you.” I let out a breath. Who was I kidding? I already knew what the response would be. I tried to keep a stoic face as I put the pillow aside. “I’m just gonna give him five minutes and hear what he has to say.” I sounded so confident but I felt the complete opposite. I got up and walked past Drew ignoring the judgey look he was giving me. My legs felt weak as I approached the front door. I saw his shoes first. And then the rest of him as I got closer. His head was hung low and one arm resting against the wall with his tattoos on full display. He must have sensed me getting closer because he looked up and a knot formed in between his brows.

“I feel like an idiot. I feel like such a huge idiot.” I spoke with a groan as I buried my face into my pillow.I wanted to scream until I lost my voice but alas, my voice was still intact and my chagrin, greater so.I felt Keri’s hand rub my back trying (but failing) to ease my agony.“Hey, don’t say that, it could have honestly happened to anyone.” She spoke.I looked up at her with a dead pan look.“I told him I loved him.” I spoke feeling something twisting in my gut while I fought the tears of embarrassment and hurt. “And he didn’t even say it back. He didn’t look like he even wanted to.”I let out a huff and buried my head again thinking of the look on Kaden’s face. What if all he had wanted was something causal. To just have fun like we had been. What if I had just ruined everything?“Mia.” Keri spoke soothingly. “It’s okay sweetie. Listen, if you ask me, this might be a good thing. If Kaden wasn’t ready to say it back. Maybe he doesn’t deserve you?”I didn’t even tell her the

I couldn’t believe how relieved I felt when the door opened and Kaden peeked in.I was sitting at Silver’s bedroom desk just finishing up my Algebra homework when I saw that lovable grin on his face.“Hey there.” He spoke. “Can I come in?”I couldn’t control the wide smile that spread across my own face.I pushed back and ran to him jumping into his arms and kissing him simultaneously. He tightened his arms around my waist lifting me off the ground slightly. He chuckled as he set me down. “Someone really missed me.” He commented.I shrugged. If only he knew I would much rather be with him than endure Silver’s cold shoulder any longer.“Where’s Silv?” He asked as if reading my mind.“She said she went to get some snacks downstairs.” I responded hoping the underlying skepticism wasn’t too obvious.“Huh.” Kaden spoke thoughtfully. He moved his jaw to the side as if stretching it. “And how long has she been gone?”I shrugged. “I don’t know, fifteen minutes?”Definitely long enough for me

When we got to the Reyes mansion, Silver didn’t say anything at all. The entire drive had been silent and awkward and I for sure thought she would breech the topic of our estrangement but none of that came up. When Silver took off her seat belt and tried to exit the car, I put on my big girl pants and just decided to address the situation. “Are we cool?” I asked out loud. Silver slowed down and turned to give give me a look that showed she was obviously taken aback by my question. I sighed. “Are we okay, Silv? Ever since Kaden and I got back together, it’s been… awkward between the two of us.” Silver paused. She let go of the car handle and fiddled with her car keys. “I don’t have a problem with you and Kaden being back together, Mia.” It was my turn to be surprised. “Uhm, I didn’t mean it that way… I - wait, do you have a problem with Kaden and I dating?” Silver opened her mouth then closed it. “No. That’s not what I meant.” She spoke quickly. I rubbed my arm feeling uncomfo

“The countdown has officially begun!” Rochelle announced excitedly as she set up the strip away pad that currently had a huge 12 on it.I yelped squeezing Ross’ hand and I jumped up and down.“I can’t believe prom is in 12 days.”Ross straightened his glasses looking at my hand that clutched his in confusion.“What I can’t believe is that we actually managed not to screw up this entire process.” He spoke.Ted walked over grinning at the printed out prom fliers. He picked one up, admiring it. “Tell me about it. I don’t know how you did it, Mia, but you somehow made the entire thing actually not look like crap.”I flushed. “Please, we all did this.” I spoke as I let go of Ross and walked up to straighten some of the left over tickets on the desk Branson was sitting at.Branson smirked at me. “Your modesty amazes me.”“It amazes all of us.” Fridah spoke from where she was monitoring Ted finishing up the playlist making sure he didn’t add any music that the principal would surely call us
