“No way, I hate your little wimp of a boyfriend.” Drew says definitively with a straight face.

My own drops in disappointment as I follow him around the apartment.

"What? Since when?"

Drew shrugged, finding his sneakers under the coffee table and sitting on the couch to pull them on. "Since always. I only tolerate him because he seems harmless and you like him."

He stood up, his expression unchanged. "But he's still a hormonal crazed teen boy, and there's no way I'm letting you go to a party with him at his house in the middle of the night."

I open my mouth in shock and then shut it again. Dang it. So I guess Marshall was right.

"Drew, you can't do this!" I whined, feeling a surge of frustration.

Drew walked by me. "Actually, I can. I’m your legal guardian, Mia.” He speaks, his words filled with authority.

I let out a loud groan and stomp my foot, but he doesn’t even flinch.

It’s almost comical how the tables have suddenly shifted and now I have to look at my older brother who only has three years on me like a father figure.

He stops by Hayden’s bedroom door and pounds on it. “Stop fixing your hair, Hayde, we gotta go or we’ll be late.”

Seconds later, Hayden walks out and his shoulder length blonde hair is tied in a man bun that actually makes him look kind of cute. Well kind of cute if he didn’t have such a rugged physique. The muscle shirt he adorns put his ripped arms out on display for everyone to see and he definitely looks like the kind of guy who goes to the gym four times a week.

They’re all gym rats; Drew, Scott and Hayden but Hayden is definitely the largest of the three.

"Why are you yelling?" Hayden asks impatiently as he grabs a water bottle from his backpack and gulps some down. His blue eyes land on me, and he raises a curious brow. "Why's our little princess mad?"

I pout, sinking down onto the couch and crossing my arms over my chest. "Drew won't let me go to a party at my boyfriend's house tonight."

Hayden's expression turns thoughtful as he glances at Drew. "You mean Marshall? I've never liked that kid."

I look at him incredulously wondering how they all could hate Marshall when they’ve only met him a handful of times. He’s the perfect and sweetest boy on the planet. How could they not like him?

"Everyone's literally gonna be there, and I'll be the loser girl who's forced to stay home by my lame big brother.” I whine knowing very well how childish I sound.

But I can’t even pretend to mask my frustration and disappointment.

Drew rolls his eyes. “Yeah and your lame big brother isn’t changing his mind.”

I turn to Hayden, my eyes pleading. “Hayden, help, please.” I whine.

Hayden shrugs and gives me a sympathetic look. "Sorry, M. Drew's the boss."

I let out a frustrated groan. "Arg! I hate you!" I yell even though I know Drew won’t really take my outburst seriously.

He smiled unapologetically.

"And I don't care as long as you're safe.” Drew speaks, his tone firm but laced with amusement. He walks over and plants a kiss on my forehead. “See you later kid. We're off to work. Scott will be back from his shift soon to watch you. You two can order pizza and make him watch Barbie a movie or something. Doesn't that sound fun?" His tone is mocking, and I fight the urge to scream that I’m not twelve anymore.

“See you, M!” Hayden calls out as he shuts the door behind him.

I always imagined that after a tornado, it would be silent, still… That you would get to go outside again and examine the damages, see what was left. I turned to Kaden as he drove into the parking lot of my apartment building with one thought; this tornado had completely unravelled everything. He found a parking spot and turned off the engine before turning to look at me. I watched him as well feeling a sense of confusion for what all this was. I knew I should be staying away, admitting kissing him was a mistake and running the other way. But instead I just wanted to be closer to him. To become entangled with him and never escape. That’s how in deep I was. “Dang it.” I spoke. He rose his brows in amusement and I realised I had said that out loud. I shut my eyes tightly for a second before opening them again. “We shouldn’t have done that, should we?” I asked as I unbuckled my seat belt and ran a hand through my hair wondering how messed up it looked after that make out sessi

“You okay?” Kaden’s voice came from beside me.“Gimmie a sec.” I spoke as I held an icy cold water bottle to me head.I was leaning against Kaden’s car with my eyes shut trying to force my nervous system to come back to earth and convince it that we weren’t in danger anymore.I opened my eyes and lowered the bottle, letting out a breath as I turned to face Kaden.“Remind me never to do that again.” I told him raising an accusatory finger at him.He chuckled as he took the bottle away from me and opened it before handing it back.“Drink some of that.” He instructed.I eyed the bottle cautiously before taking it away from him.“I will. But not because you told me to. Because I want to.” I spoke stubbornly as I took a selfish gulp not knowing how thirsty thinking you were going to die could make you.Kaden let out a quiet laugh as he wiped his hands on his pants and ducked into his car to bring out a jacket.“You look cold.” He commented as he held it out to me.I stared at the clothing

“Mia?” Branson asked in confusion. He then turned to look in the direction I was staring. What I had thought was a ghost was heading right in our direction, determination in his eyes.I swallowed hard.“Mia?” Branson asked again, this time more cautiously with an edge to his voice and I knew he was waiting for my cue on what to do next.“I uhm,” I stumbled back slightly. “I have to -“I didn’t even finish my sentence before I was basically jogging through the crowd immediately fleeing. It was only when I bumped into a clown like man that I stopped for a second to wonder why the hell I was even running.I didn’t have anything to be embarrassed by or ashamed of.In fact, what was Kaden even doing here? How dare he think it was okay to even come here where I would be and - and give me that look. Like I had been cheating. We weren’t anything to each other. That was evident. So why was my heart racing and why did I feel so confused that I could scream.“Mia!” His voice tore through the cro

“Branson better give us a cut of his funds for basically being his groupie fan girls.” Rochelle spoke as she straightened out her Flaming Roses t-shirt.I laughed as I tied my own to the side so that it wouldn’t cover the black tennis skirt I had opted to wear today,Drew had given me one look at asked who I was getting all dressed up for.Because apparently to him, wearing a cute skirt and curling my hair in the morning necessitated a new boy I was giving attention. But I guess he wasn’t entirely wrong this time. Gosh I hated admitting this.Seeing Kaden with that gorgeous blonde last night completely rewired my brain.I had gone from mourning him to being more heart broken to being angry and now, I think I had reached the acceptance stage. So Kaden was with someone new, that shouldn’t have mattered. Him and I were done. But I guess while I had been hang up on him, he had no problem moving on.“‘Mia? You good?” Amy asked as she straightened her glasses.I looked down and realised I h

A few minutes later we were parked outside the club.“We’ll be back in a few.” Scott spoke as he and Hayden got out.He came over to the window where I sat. “You sure you’ll be okay?”I nodded at him even though just being here made me feel tense. But I wasn’t going to go in there and increase the risk of seeing Kaden.Scott nodded not looking convinced but accepting it anyway. “Call me incase of anything.” He spoke firmly before turning to head in with Hayden.I picked up my phone and plugged in my ear buds trying to distract myself. At that moment a message popped up.It was a YouTube link from Branson.Branson: http//www.youtube-flamingroses.comBranson: incase you wanted to brush up on a few of our classics before the carnival.Branson: p.s if you hate it, I’ll cryI smiled to myself as I opened up the video. There were four guys in a garage. Branson was the only one I recognised walking up to the centre microphone with a red guitar in his hands. He smirked at the camera.“This on

“Oh my goodness! This looks freaking amazing!” Branson yelled as he stood back to admire the photo booth. I walked up to join him, paint on my hands and in my hair. My fingers also ached and I was pretty sure I had gotten about fifteen paper cuts alone today. But Branson was right, the set up looked great and was definitely giving old Hollywood glamour with the red curtain back drop and twinkly white lights. Branson straightened out the camera on the tripod stand. “Now all we have to do is make sure no one breaks anything.” He spoke. I started piling the leftover materials in a box. “Well it is a bunch of hormone crazed teenagers, I think that’s asking for too much.” He chuckled as he walked up to me helping me clean up. Everyone else on the committee had bailed on us leaving Branson and I to finish everything up. It wasn’t really a hustle. I liked keeping my mind and hands busy these days. And being around Branson made that easier. He was laid back and not to mention, funny.
