Elara's POV

The knock came at eleven.

I was at the kitchen table with the invocation language in front of me, going through it for the fourth time, when I heard it — three quiet knocks, the careful kind, the kind of knock that knows it's late and is asking permission rather than announcing itself.

I opened the door.

Selene.

She was alone. No coat — she'd driven here without one, which meant she'd left in a hurry or hadn't planned to come at all until she was already going. She looked at me with

Elara's POVThe knock came at eleven.I was at the kitchen table with the invocation language in front of me, going through it for the fourth time, when I heard it — three quiet knocks, the careful kind, the kind of knock that knows it's late and is asking permission rather than announcing itself.I opened the door.Selene.She was alone. No coat — she'd driven here without one, which meant she'd left in a hurry or hadn't planned to come at all until she was already going. She looked at me with the specific expression of someone who has rehearsed something and arrived to find that the rehearsal is useless."I know it's late," she said.I stepped back. She came in. Looked at the kitchen table — the documents, the old law volume, the invocation notes. Then at the cot in the corner where Renn was asleep, because I'd moved it to the kitchen tonight so I could work and still hear him.She looked at Renn for a long time.Something moved through her face. Not performance — I knew her perform

Elara's POVDamian came at nine. The flat was quieter than it had been in days — Aldric and Dessa had gone to the hotel where the Silverpeak delegation was staying, Caden was doing a final sweep of the building's security, Mara Fenn was at the kitchen table with the old law volume and a cup of tea, preparing to be invisible when I needed her to be and present when I didn't.I opened the door before he knocked. He looked at me. Then past me at Mara Fenn. "Am I interrupting?""No," I said. "Come in."He entered the house. Mara Fenn looked at him over her glasses, assessed him in approximately three seconds, and went back to her book. Damian sat at the table. I put tea in front of him and sat across."The bloodright conversion," I said.He looked up."I'm invoking it tomorrow."He was very still. "Tell me what that means."I told him. All of it — the conversion mechanism, the shift of burden, the Voice as legal evidence of the claim, what happens to Elder Mara's position when the hearing

Elara's POVThe session was supposed to be about control. We had been doing this for months — Mara Fenn's sitting room, the particular chair she kept for me, the exercises that had gone from exhausting to instinctive. I could hold the Voice back now without effort. I could let it forward in measured amounts. The stairwell panic was a long time ago. This session, forty-eight hours before the tribunal, was supposed to be the last calibration.Instead Mara Fenn sat across from me with her hands folded and her tea untouched and said: "There's something I've been deciding whether to tell you."I looked at her."That phrasing," I said, "from you, is alarming.""It should be, slightly." She looked at her hands. "When I said you could challenge the tribunal on bloodright grounds — I was imprecise. I allowed you to understand it as a defensive argument. A way to contest the charges." She paused. "It's more than that.""Tell me.""Under ancient wolf law — old law, pre-pack-system law, the law t

Chapter 46Elara's POVSix days before the tribunal, my kitchen table disappeared under paper.Aldric on one side with the Silverpeak archive documents, organized by date and cross-referenced with pack law citations I hadn't known existed. Caden opposite him with his intelligence files, adding to a timeline we'd been building on the wall behind us — a physical map of eighteen years of decisions and cover-ups and small crimes that had compounded into something enormous.Mara Fenn sat at the end of the table with Roland's signed testimony and Nessa's copies and the forged death record, reading through all of it with the systematic attention of someone who had spent forty years knowing this day was coming and intended to ensure it went right.Dessa was on the phone in the hallway. I could hear fragments — *confirmed, yes, four representatives, travel arranged.*Renn was at Dr. Maeve's. I had kissed his head that morning and he had grabbed my ear and I had held on for an extra moment befo

Damian's POVShe called at six in the evening."I need the Voss household authorization logs from eighteen years ago sent to Aldric tonight," she said. "Bret has them. Can you arrange it?""Yes. I'll call him now.""And—" A pause. "Renn is asking for you."I went very still."He doesn't have language yet," she said, before I could respond. "He doesn't ask for anything in words. But he's been—" Another pause. "He knows. I don't know how to explain it more than that. He knows and he keeps looking at the door." A breath. "If you want to come this evening, come. If you're not ready—""I'll be there in an hour," I said.---Caden opened the door. Looked at me. Said nothing and stepped back, which was the most civil thing he had done in my direction in the weeks since I'd known he existed. The flat was lit warmly. Something cooking — the smell of it domestic and ordinary, the specific normalcy of an evening in a place where someone lived rather than worked. I had been in the office and in t

Elara's POVHe called the next morning at eight."Can we meet?" he said. "Properly. Somewhere we can talk without—" A pause. "Without me leaving before it's finished."I looked at Renn in his chair, examining his breakfast with deep suspicion."Two hours," I said. "My office at noon."---He arrived at noon exactly.Petra showed him in and closed the door and I heard her outer office chair scrape in the particular way it scraped when she was positioning herself to be useful if required. I made a note to give her a raise.Damian sat across the desk. Looked around the office — the files, the east-facing window, the map of cross-territory supply routes pinned to the wall. He didn't comment on any of it but he looked at all of it."You built this," he said."Yes.""From nothing.""From forty-seven dollars and a routing problem." I opened the folder in front of me. "I have terms."He looked at the folder. Then at me. "Alright.""Not relationship terms," I said. "Not forgiveness terms. Not
