Elara's POV

The hall was full.

Panel table at the front. Five chairs, Elder Mara at the center. The gallery packed — pack representatives, journalists, people who had traveled from territories I'd never heard of. The Interpack Chronicle had run four pieces in three days. The wolf world had decided this was worth watching.

I walked in.

The room tracked me with their eyes, I went to the respondent's table, sat down, put my folder in front of me and looked at Elder Mara.

She looked back.

I held he

Elara's POVCaden called at two in the afternoon on Friday."It's happening," he said. "Now. Damian's enforcement team is at the Voss house."I put down the inter-pack council document I'd been reading."Yvonne?" I said."Formal pack charges. Forgery, falsification of death records, abuse of administrative authority." A pause. "Murder, Elara. They filed murder."I sat very still."She's being taken into pack custody," he said. "Roland is at the house. He's watching from the courtyard. He's not — he's just watching.""And Selene?""Her office called her this morning. She was informed before it happened." A pause. "She said alright."I looked at the window. The ordinary street. The bookshop. A man walking a dog."Alright," I said."Are you?"I thought about it honestly. "I don't know yet. Ask me in an hour."I ended the call.Renn was on the floor with his wooden puzzle, working a piece with focused determination. He had been at it for twenty minutes. The puzzle had six pieces. He had s

Damian's POVBret was in my office at six, seated, with a coffee and a stack of correspondence that had apparently arrived before dawn. He looked up when I came through the door with the expression he reserved for situations that required him to deliver a significant amount of information without editorial comment."How bad?" I said.He handed me the stack.I sat down and read.Three statements of council support — Councilmen Reth, Aldana, and Prue, all measured, all carefully worded to affirm the Alpha's authority without specifically endorsing the bloodright claim. One statement of silence from two others who had clearly decided that waiting was safer than speaking. And one formal request, from Councilman Dray, for a review of my endorsement on grounds of acting without council consultation.I set the stack down. "Dray.""He filed it at four this morning," Bret said. "Which means he drafted it before the tribunal ended.""He knew what I was going to do.""He knew what you were likel

Elara's POVI slept for ten hours. No alarm, no documents and no invocation language to review. I put Renn down at seven and got into bed and didn't move until five the next morning when he announced himself from the next room and I got up and fed him and sat at the kitchen table in the dark and listened to the building breathe around me.The Interpack Chronicle had published at midnight. Caden had sent the link with no comment. I read it on my phone over tea.ASHFORD BLOODRIGHT INVOKED: First Successful Conversion in Over a Century.Below it, the subheadings. Wolfe Pack Alpha Endorses Claim. Founding Family Representative Implicated in Historical Coup. Elder Mara Suspended Pending Full Review.tI read the article. Then two more from different outlets — one from Packwatch that was measured and accurate, one from a territory publication that had clearly been written in a hurry and got two details wrong, which Petra had already flagged with a correction request. I sent her a message say

Walked past Elder Mara's table without acknowledging it. Sat in the witness section. His eyes found mine — steady, ready — and moved forward. The charges were read. The misconduct framing. The Alpha's bed elevated into deliberate manipulation. The commercial identity is framed as deception. The bond was framed as exploitation.I listened as I kept my hands still.Damian was called first. He gave his testimony without notes —

Elara's POVThe knock came at eleven.I was at the kitchen table with the invocation language in front of me, going through it for the fourth time, when I heard it — three quiet knocks, the careful kind, the kind of knock that knows it's late and is asking permission rather than announcing itself.I opened the door.Selene.She was alone. No coat — she'd driven here without one, which meant she'd left in a hurry or hadn't planned to come at all until she was already going. She looked at me with the specific expression of someone who has rehearsed something and arrived to find that the rehearsal is useless."I know it's late," she said.I stepped back. She came in. Looked at the kitchen table — the documents, the old law volume, the invocation notes. Then at the cot in the corner where Renn was asleep, because I'd moved it to the kitchen tonight so I could work and still hear him.She looked at Renn for a long time.Something moved through her face. Not performance — I knew her perform

Elara's POVDamian came at nine. The flat was quieter than it had been in days — Aldric and Dessa had gone to the hotel where the Silverpeak delegation was staying, Caden was doing a final sweep of the building's security, Mara Fenn was at the kitchen table with the old law volume and a cup of tea, preparing to be invisible when I needed her to be and present when I didn't.I opened the door before he knocked. He looked at me. Then past me at Mara Fenn. "Am I interrupting?""No," I said. "Come in."He entered the house. Mara Fenn looked at him over her glasses, assessed him in approximately three seconds, and went back to her book. Damian sat at the table. I put tea in front of him and sat across."The bloodright conversion," I said.He looked up."I'm invoking it tomorrow."He was very still. "Tell me what that means."I told him. All of it — the conversion mechanism, the shift of burden, the Voice as legal evidence of the claim, what happens to Elder Mara's position when the hearing
