The rest of the night was gloomy. The morning was even worse. So far, our family has never been selected but what if we were unlucky today.

Nevaeh was quiet. Mama chewed on her fingers. It was a nervous habit. Papa was his normal self but I could tell he was worried. Coulter on the other hand was indifferent. I know he cared about us but right now he wasn't thinking about it.

I took my shower quickly and wore a yellow dress. The hand straps were thin. The sun was already shining brightly.

I was the last to join them in the living room. It was a bad habit I had. Coming late. Papa scolded me often but today he didn't spare me a glance.

We started our trek to the town hall. Mama walked beside Papa and they talked in hushed tones. Coulter walked far ahead while Nevaeh and I walked together. The hall was full and our family took the vacant space by the window.

Our leader Silas and his beautiful wife Harriet were not here yet. They had three daughters. They were below the age of twenty so they would not be chosen.

Nevaeh and I just turned twenty-one and so our chances of being picked were very high.

I looked around and took in the gloomy faces of the others who has daughters as old as us. The other whose daughters had not come of age had a lighter mood and whispered.

The nature of humans. They were not concerned as long as they would not be chosen. They typically cared for only themselves.

"Do you think it'll be our family?" Nevaeh asked in a small voice. I didn't know how to reply to the question. I didn't like to sugarcoat things. And honestly, we had a very high chance.

One, the loud family had two daughters that were of age. Secondly, our family has never been selected. I didn't want to lie and tell her we won't be chosen when we very well could be.

"I don't know Nevaeh" this was the most honest answer I could give her. She heaved a sigh and looked away. I wished I could make her smile but she was going to be like this until we left the hall without being chosen.

After two long hours, Silas decided to make an appearance with his family. I could see the solemn look on their face. It saddened him to send the girl but an agreement was an agreement. We've never heard the full story just snippets but from what I know, one of our past leaders agreed with them to stop the beasts from killing us.

"Sorry to keep you waiting," Silas said once he climbed the podium. A true gentleman. He was never late and always made apologies for his mistake.

A few grumbles from the people but the hall went silent. At that moment, I saw Edel enter the hall. His hair was ruffled and the sunlight caught the golden strands making him stand out.

His eyes traveled around the room and rested on mine. I gave him a wide smile and waved before he took his seat. He waved back and Silas cleared his throat.

I realized a lot of eyes were ok me and I blushed. Edel had made some noise when he entered and eyes were on him so when he waved at me, they looked in my direction.

"Let us proceed," Silas said and all attention went back to him.

"All the parents, to the left. The men at the center and the girls to the right" there was shuffling of feet and noise as we rearranged ourselves. Nevaeh and I moved to the right with the other girls.

"Now. The girls below twenty move to the left and let those that are of age remain on the right" there were loud footsteps and the younger girls moved. When I looked back, I paled. The girls of age at the gathering were significantly smaller than the previous year. Some people had moved to other cities. And since they were gone, they couldn't be part of the choosing.

I knew a lot of people who were ripe for the choice but their parents had removed them. Probably when they heard there'll be a choice soon.

"I'm scared" Nevaeh whispered. This time, I didn't say a word. I was scared too.

Silas's eyes moved from one face to another while his assistant stood beside him.

"As usual, five families will be called, and we'll keep eliminating until we get to the last family. So once you hear your last name, please stand"

"Hinsen. Pegany. Stawarski. Beischel." The girls were already standing. Everyone remained silent as we waited for the last name. His eyes landed on mine and I quickly looked away.

Don't call us. Don't call us.

"Dolivo" Time froze. I couldn't believe it. He called our name.

"Dolivo. Please stand" I was standing while trying to process the information. Nevaeh also stood up. I felt her eyes on me but I couldn't look at her. I won't be able to handle her watery eyes.

"Pegany and Stawarski you may seat" audible signs of relief could be heard across the room. I shuffled on my feet and said a prayer under my breath.

"Beischel. Take your seat"

I was nervous now. My family had never gotten to this stage ever. From mother's stories, our family name has never been called.

My heart thumped wildly in my chest and I was sure it was the same for Nevaeh. One look at her and I could see her shaking.

Please don't let us be chosen. I prayed. I'll be more obedient and respectful. I'll take my responsibilities seriously but please let us seat.

I didn't care that I sounded selfish at this moment. I'll be happy if they picked her over us and there was no denying it.

Silas and his advisor were in a corner talking in hushed tones. Their eyes moved over us every few minutes. I shrugged off the dreadful feeling that was threatening to consume me.

Silas and his advisor finished their discussion and we waited for them to address us.

"It hurts me to do this. It hurts all of us but it is necessary because it's the only way we can be safe"

He took a deep breath.

"The choosing is not malicious or personal. To the family that gets chosen, you have a week to prepare your daughter. Say your last goodbyes and when the men come to take her, do not struggle with them. Simply hand her over to the guards"

The hall was tense as everyone waited for his final decision. And he just remained silent. At one point I wanted to scream at him.

"Hinsley." He called their name and hesitated. He had a solemn look on his face and I was convinced that family had been chosen. I visibly relaxed and waited for him to complete it.

"You may take your seat" my head jerked up. His eyes were on the Hinsley girl. Was he? Was he telling her to take her seat?

I looked at him and his eyes caught mine.

"Dolivo. Your family has been chosen"

  • The Beasts Substitute Bride   Epilogue

I splashed some water on my face and washed the putrid taste from my mouth. I had been throwing up non stop and I had a feeling I was with child.I had the feeling since we ended our honeymoon over a month ago but with the stress of the ball and everything I laid it no mind plus I wasn't having symptoms.I had not mentioned it to anyone. Not Brayan or Elowen or Winry or even Nevaeh.Yes. We had been working on our relationship and even though things would never be like they used to, we were still close."Paisley" someone shouted my name from the back and I jumped in fright.“What the fuck Winry. You scared me”“Sorry” she giggled.“What’s up?”“I want to tell you something. But away from prying ears”“What’s that” she didn’t reply and pulled me along until we entered her room and she closed the door behind her.“What’s up” I asked again.“Remember when you kept asking me if I had a boyfriend?” She looked at the door again.“Yes. You said you don’t have any”“I lied”“Yes. I knew it” I

Brayan successfully made us some pasta and I was lounging in his arms when we heard a car outside.“Have they come to pick up the work?”“No. They aren’t supposed to until I call for them and I haven’t” he climbed out of bed and looked through the window blinds.“Stay here. I’ll check who it is”I obviously wasn’t going to stay. The moment he was out of sight, I climbed down too and followed him outside. From the distance, i could see him talking to Gannon and he kept looking over his shoulder.I moved closer and I heard a deep sigh.“I thought I told you to stay indoors” He already knew I was here. No need for hiding. I came out and stood by his side while Gannon smiled widely.“Is something wrong?” He shifted his gaze to Brayan before answering me.“There is a small issue back at the house that needs your attention and aunt Elowen asked me to get you”I frowned. What issue could possibly need my attention.“It’s not important and Gannon will return and tell them you are available s

My body writhed in pleasure as I opened my eyes. The pleasant feeling between my legs causing me to moan loudly. My fingers moved instantly to his hair and I clenched it tightly. My orgasm wasn’t far away and I was going to explode soon. His tongue worked harder and I kept his head in place with a strong grip.Just when I was about to cross through to explode, he pulled away and grinned at me. I stared at him confused.“Why did you stop?” I asked breathlessly.“The only time you’ll be coming will be around my dick”With that he sunk deeply into me and I gasped. He pushed my legs up and grabbed them tightly as he thrust roughly into me with an urgency. I could barely hold on as he fucked me and soon enough, I was tightening around him and bursting into a toe curling orgasm. He continued with a few hard thrusts until he exploded too his seed shooting deep into me and triggering another orgasm from me. He collapsed onto me, his weight slightly crushing me as we both tried to catch our br

We removed each other's clothes as he carried me through the door and i clung onto him tightly his bare chest against my breasts. He carried me to the bedroom and dropped me gently on the bed, climbing over me. His kisses left my mouth and moved downwards to my neck and to my breast. He continued his adoration of my body planting several kisses on each of my breasts, taking a moment to admire my body. His tongue moved to my mark and I moaned loudly. The mark intensified my emotions and made me even hornier than I already was.He moved slowly down my body, leaving kisses on my stomach and my hip bone. I spread my legs wider to grant him access to ravishing me. He didn't disappoint, his tongue already working it's magic.I played with myself while he pleasures me and it didn't take long for me to come on his face. He licked me until my orgasm ended and I became sensitive. He climbed over me again and kissed me. I could taste myself on his lips and I kissed him even harder. I rolled h

Like we both wanted, the final ritual was held early. Not as early as both of us would like but two days later. I was dressed in a new blue dress. It wasn’t as simple as the first one I had chosen but it was equally as beautiful. I was seating in the room waiting for Elowen to come and get me like the last time. I wasn’t nervous just excited and eager to get this over with. The door opened and I looked up. Brayan hurriedly enters the room and shut the door behind him.“What are you doing here?” I shouted.“I had to see you before we started”“It’s not allowed. It’s bad luck” he rolled his eyes.“No bad luck. You look very beautiful”I blushed. “Thank you”“I wish we didn’t have to go through this first. I want to snatch you away and ravish you”“But you can’t” I heard voices.“You have to go now”“Give me a kiss first”“Brayan” I complained looking at the door and fearing someone would come in.“I’ll just make myself comfortable until you kiss me”“Fine” I grabbed his face and kisse

The flight back was very long and tiresome since we were a good distance away from our town. I was anxious but excited to see him.He didn't know that his mum and sister had come for me. Winry had admitted a few times that she heard him cry in his office though I doubted it. Brayan didn't look like one who would cry.I wasn't moving on like I had thought. Brayan was my whole world and if the only thing holding him back has been taken care of, there was nothing keeping us apart. Our plane landed and Garret picked us up at the airport. He had a wide smile on his face and sent me a wink through the rear view mirror. He finally parked in the driveway and we got down. Dakarai was waiting outside and he had a blank look on his face. The jitters returned. What if he hasn't forgiven me."Welcome child" he smiled widely and spread his arms. I rant to him and hugged him tightly. I missed them so much and I was glad to be back."Where is he?" Elowen asked."In his study" Dakarai said and slipp
