TESSA’S POV

“How was your first day at work?” Angelina asked me as she led me to the kids’ playhouse. According to her, this was one of the few places the human ‘breeders’ were allowed to see their children.

“Fine.” I responded.

“Just…fine? I expected something more… interesting.”

I chuckled. “It really was fine. But I got this feeling like Wraith is taking things easy with me.”

“I’m surprised he even let you work at all.” Angelina said, and I couldn’t help but agree.

We walked into the playhouse, and I didn’t miss how Angelina’s eyes lit up at the sight of the kids. None of them look older than two.

“Aren’t they the cutest?” she questioned, more to herself than to me.

“They are.” I agreed anyway. They all looked like regular human babies.

“I wish I had a child of my own. I’ve always wanted kids.” She said, the light in her eyes dimming. I suddenly realized why she had been so excited to come here; I always forget how rare it is for werewolf females to have children.

“Who knows, you m

The healers had informed me Wraith was under a heavy sedative; they believed it might help quicken the healing and reduce the pain. But even in his sleep, he still looked in pain. His brows were furrowed, sweat trickled down his forehead, and he trembled as if he was cold.I took his hands in mine once again.“Wraith.” I called, but this time he couldn’t hear me. “I don’t know what to do—”Someone walked in.A healer, I’d assumed, till I looked up to see Natasha. She wasn’t looking at me—she was looking at him.“He’s still in pain. The sedative isn’t enough to numb it.” She said, confirming my own thoughts. “No one can help him right now; he will have to fight this all on his own.”I had no idea why Natasha was speaking to me, but now I could clearly see how much she cared for him. She finally looked at me, her sneer returning—blame bright in her eyes. Then she turned around and walked away.Natasha had said no one could help him, but maybe she was wrong; maybe there was a way to help

Wraith had always been that kind of man—throwing himself into danger to protect those he cared about. I only wished he could worry more about his own safety. It might have been a selfish thought, but a part of me wished it wasn’t him lying on that bed. That he hadn’t stepped in the way.It was a surprise that he survived the wolfsbane, but that didn’t mean he came out unscathed. According to the healers, they weren’t sure if his body system would ever function normally again—and even if it somehow did, it would take months.“You should go take some rest; it’s been two days. You can’t stay here forever.” Angelina said, her eyes filled with pity as she looked down at me.“Rest? You really think I could sleep after this?”I did feel like a mess, but I couldn’t bring myself to care about cleaning up or taking a nap.“Tessa. It’s fine.” This time it was Rex who’d spoken up. “I’ll watch over him; go get some rest.”It wasn’t a suggestion; it was a command. A command I wanted so much to dis

I ran into the infirmary, Angelina right behind me.We nearly crashed into Jake, who stared at me with a questioning look.“You were supposed to keep her away,” he said to Angelina.“I tried, okay. But she wouldn’t listen.” I spotted the room Wraith was being taken into, and I hurried towards it, only to be stopped once again, but this time, by Natasha.“Where do you think you’re going?”“Natasha, I don’t have time for your games; get out of my way.”“Haven’t you done enough? He’s in there because of you.”I didn’t bother responding to her; her weak jabs were the least of my worries right now.“Get the fuck out of my way or else—”“Or else what? What can you do, little human?”“Please, just stop. I have to see him; he needs me.”“I’m on orders; no one goes in. The healers are working on him now; no one can be in there.”I took a deep breath. Stepping back, I located the nearest seat, and sank into one of the waiting chairs. Angelina joined me.“I’m so sorry.” She said to me, but I r

We walked past a painting of Falcone Callister seated on a throne-like chair made of gold with a lion at his side.Rex snorted at it.Another picture caught my eye. A smaller one with a girl, no older than five. She had on a hat way bigger than her head and gave a bright smile to the camera. A cousin or friend, I assumed.“So that’s it then? It’s over.” I muttered to myself as we walked to the car waiting for us.Seeing the Callisters so desperate was a picture that would be stuck in my head for a very long time.“No, it’s far from over.” Rex said. “Run a check on everything Falcone owned, make sure it aligns with the records—”It had all happened so fast.A man on a bike drove past us with a weapon that had a resemblance to a gun in his hands. He aimed at Rex and shot.“Get down.” I growled, dragging Rex down and shielding him.The sound of a rifle tore through the air. A sniper’s bullet ripped through the attacker’s skull, sending him crashing to the ground and his bike falling over

WRAITH’S POVI slipped a black suit over the long-sleeved shirt I was already wearing. A knock at the door pulled my attention.I walked to the door, pulling it open, and there she stood, with a tray of food in her hands.“You didn’t join us for dinner, I thought maybe I could bring you some food here.” She said,I wasn’t exactly hungry, but I let her in.She placed the tray on the table.Tessa hadn’t stepped into my room since the… incident. I must’ve scared her off. Even now, she avoided looking around, keeping her eyes fixed on me instead.“It’s time, right?” She questioned, and I nodded. “Do you really think it’s a good idea to meet them at their place? I mean, it just sounds… dangerous. What if they attack?”That had been my earlier concern. But Rex believed they wouldn’t. He believed that meeting with them at their home was safer.“You have nothing to worry about. We will be back in no time.” I assured her, but of course, that wasn’t enough to ease her worry.“I—I just wanted yo

  • The Beta and The Lost Heiress   Chapter Seventy Four

TESSA’S POVI saw it the moment he walked into the office.I knew something was wrong and it didn’t take long to figure out what. That wasn’t him. I could see it—the restraint he was holding back, the war raging in his eyes. For some reason, my thoughts drifted back to the conversation I’d had with Rex when I stumbled into his wing. He’d spoken about the distance he could go for the pack—for what belonged to them. I’d believed, then, that he was referring to the painting we were both admiring. But now, I could clearly see the hidden message. He was telling me exactly how far he’d go to protect his pack. And in his eyes, I was a… complication. It wasn’t Wraith that wanted me gone. It was Alpha Rex.And maybe he was right. After all, those soldiers died because of me, Wraith lost the fight against the Iron-side pack because of me, but I… couldn’t leave. I meant every word I’d said to Wraith—every confession was genuine. It wasn’t the heat of the moment or desperation speaking. It was m
