Chapter 16: A Witch’s Hope

"You thought the Alpha would set you free, didn't you?" The chains he was pulling from the cell clanked against the bars, startling me from where I dozed in the corner.

He stepped into the space and I saw someone had lit another lantern and it now hung on the wall outside my cell.

The dim glow was barely enough to light up the dungeon.

I realized that they didn't even need the light. I watched him as he picked his way around the shards of glass. He stepped on some, and they snapped beneath his heavy boots.

He bent and dropped a wooden platter, stepping aside he looked down at me with hooded eyes.

"Foiling the alphas carefully set plans means sure death. You should know that."

I peered at the platter and saw a bowl of soup and some sad looking loaf of bread.

I was not some dog. Who would eat off such chipped bowls?

I sniffed and the soup wasn't really smelling bad. I hunched over the plate and turned my face away.

He snorted and then dropped something else. It was a bottle but no
