I froze on the stage, fiddling with my fingernails. Now, the world would find out the truth that something was wrong with me. Cage would also be discovered, and only I would pay for it.

The gasps rose. I feared them. My feet fell back a step, and just when I was about to crumble, broad shoulders stepped in the gap and pulled me in.

It was him. Cage. My face was currently buried in his chest, but if I didn't hate him so much for making me give up my life's legacy, I would have snuggled closer to inhale all of him. The enemy smelled good. Too good.

"What are you doing here?" I croaked.

"A bodyguard must protect his owner at all costs."

His hand patted down my hair. The other one slipped around my waist, pulling me close. If we weren't faking this to save ourselves, I would have been convinced.

The reporters would forget the past minute and the sudden colour of my eyes. They had seen a bigger dirt to gossip about. Blue Meyer and a man who's not Noah.

It was the news of the decade, but too bad the headlines about my death would replace that soon.

I tried pushing away from him. We had done enough damage, but his reply shocked me.

"One more minute, Blue. Stay still." He whispered.

"No, I've done what you asked. Let's get this over with." The hostility in my voice could not be missed or ignored.

Cage finally got the memo and started moving. He helped me avoid the cameras, keeping his hand on my waist to make a statement.

I expected a car, but were approaching a motorcycle parked at the curb. He got in and handed me a helmet. I paused for a beat, thinking hard. Motorcycles are dangerous. Men like him are dangerous.

Blue always played it safe.

That is, until I heard the sound of the reporters looking to draw blood. I crossed my leg over it and settled with my hand tightly gripping his waist.

The streets weren't congested with traffic. Cage drove us back to my house and was kind enough to serve me a glass of water while I slipped into the island seat.

"We must get going, Blue. The city isn't safe for you anymore."

"Get going? I'm not your witch, remember? I just resigned from my company because you asked me to clean my life up before you take it."

Cage sat across from me tentatively. He swiped a document to my front on the marble tiled top. I was hesitant to open it, so I didn't.

"Khal and his astronomer weren't wrong. You are my witch." He clasped his hands on the table, watching me with piercing hazel eyes. "I did something thinking. You couldn't open the sword because you don't have access to your powers, but very soon, you will be able to do that."

"So, I'm not dying?"

He maintained the cold look on his face as he said, "You will die if we don't leave this city now."

I shot to my feet as tense as a live wire. The thought that those shadow demons would return again scared the shit out of me. I was willing to take my chances with Cage, even though he promised to kill me, and I still hate his guts.

"Okay! Do I need my passport? Obviously, I do, but if I may ask, which city do you intend we run to until the attacks stop?"

Cage was right in front of me, distracting my already frazzled train of thoughts. He grabbed my trembling hands that clutched at my roots and dislodged them before I could harm myself. All I could smell was him again.

"No city on the world map is safe, Blue. Those demons will find you wherever you go. The only person who can keep you safe is Khal."

I could have died from a heart attack, but my body was so healthy that the chances of that happening were zero to none. There was no place on earth I would be safe in. How did my perfect life come down to this? What sort of joke was this?

Fear paralysed me. I couldn't breathe, but death was shy of me now.

"Who is this Khal? How much do I need to sway his sentiments? I would give anything, Cage."

Cage stepped back. He pulled off his shirt and stepped into the sunlight, pouring into the room through the living room window. His skin glittered like diamonds. He was in pain because the sun burned him.

He brought out his talons next. His eyes glowed amber like mine. Furs coated the skin of his face and neck. His fangs gleamed under sunlight. He had only shown me a glimpse of it the first time we met. Now, I witnessed things from a vantage point.

"What are you?"

"I'm what they call a hybrid." His voice had changed. It was much deeper and butter-like. "I'm part werewolf and part vampire. I have lived for a thousand years in Kandare and the human world, Blue."

"A thousand?" I gasped, incapable of hiding my shock. "Kandare? I'm so confused. I—I..."

I also noticed the way his eyes were drawn to me now that he had partly shifted. There was hunger in his gaze, and I couldn't tell what kind. Cage was acting differently. It was almost like he was struggling with control.

"Kandare is where you belong, Blue. The land of supernaturals will welcome you."

"What about my life here?! I have friends and fans to return to. I can't just leave forever. How do I stop the demons instead?"

Cage's bare chest heaved as he stood before me again. I could still see that hunger blazing like a wild fire in his eyes. It was passionate instead of feral, and it threw me off guard. I found myself drawn to it, too.

"You can't stop them. The Alpha of Kandare sent me here to find the Ember Blood Witch and make her his bride."

Blue"You're free to go."I stood outside the police station, and considered my next move. I climbed down the stairs of the precinct and saw Ever's car out front.I rushed to hide behind a pillar, backing into the corner because I didn't think I could handle a run in with Ever. She hated my guts apparently.I peered around the pillar and saw Ever's beautiful beast of a car zoom off. I relaxed s little more. That meant Ever was gone. And I could now leave the precinct without her even seeing me. She still believed me to be involved in this somehow.I came out of the pillar when the car drove off, letting out a sigh of relief. Now I don't have to say anything to Ever.I turned to start walking, when I saw her. Ever, she watched me with eyes that were like daggers. My heart started racing again. Ever still thought I had something to do with Blue going missing. I could almost feel her staring at me as though trying to see into my soul through my skin. She looked so pissed at me. The last

Blue"No, no, it's not what you think." I rattled out, as my hands gripped the edge of the table in a grip that made my knuckles white.Ever continued to speak into her phone, telling them to be fast.My mouth dropped open in astonishment, wondering what the fuck I'd said, to make her call her bulldogs on me. "Ever, I'm not threatening you, or anything like that." I told her with an urgency, holding my hands palm out in an open show of honesty. "I swear, it's really me. I'm Blue. I told you it's a difficult to explain situation."Her stony look could have shot me right in between my eyes for all the hate and mistrust in them. "What have you done with Blue? You wicked bitch! I've been looking for her for the last two weeks! What the fuck have you done? Where is she?"Fuck! Fuck!To them, I was missing, hadn't been seen or heard from for more than a week. And Hank! My eyes flew to hers. They must think something happened to both of us.They thought I was missing, and that I, Monica, had

BlueI dozed on the chair, my body trying to catch up on the hours of lost sleep from yesterday night on the hard bed.I sat in a chair facing the reception area in the center of the lobby. There was a row of long benches facing the reception area and I had picked one, several other people had since joined me on the bench.I yawned again, staring at the clock behind the receptionists as I wondered why Ever wasn't out yet. It was already four in the evening and I had to be back at the shelter by six at least.No. No matter what, I wouldn't go back to that place.I had to convince Ever. All of this was mine anyway, so why was I suffering? In a different body, or in my body, it was still all the same. I was Blue Meyer. The elevator doors opened with a ping and Ever walked out, her long legs moving away from me so fast. She looked gorgeous in a knee length halter dress that had no place in the workplace. Her hair hung down in curly braids and she was absorbed in her phone.I snapped to an

BlueI swiped at my face to make sure I was seeing right. He was standing in front of the door, just inside the doorway while I faced him, trying to get out."You." I breathed, my brain trying to figure out what the hell was going on.I'd seen this jacket before, I realized. He was wearing a brown jacket, with frayed arms. He'd been the one in front of me on the line last night. I gasped. "How long have you been following me?"He looked at me, and I finally saw his face in the bright light of day.Brown hair was dark now. Perhaps the glow of the lantern in that din of a dungeon had made me think it brown, when it was black. His eyes were brown though, and the thick eyebrows rose up and down as his lips tipped in frown. He sidestepped me, walking past me to one of the bathrooms. He entered a stall and slammed the door in my face, all the while staring stonily at everything else but me, and saying nothing. The door banged against the frame and slid open a fraction, but he made no furthe

Blue"Hey redhead! You're cutting!"It took a beat before I remembered I was a redhead now.I turned to glare at the voice, not sure what to say to the woman when I eventually saw the two kids she held in front of her.She dropped their hands and came to me, moving into my personal space. She smelled of sweat and a bone deep tiredness."Some of us got here before you, and you think you can just cut and get in like that? Think you're smart?"she barked, her words landing directly in my face.I stretched out a hand and pushed her back as she stumbled back two paces. "You're spitting in my face." I mumbled, wiping my face with the back of my hand.I didn't want her to get louder than she already was.She turned to the rest of the people on the line, waving her hands frantically at me. "She cut in. I saw her before, I was definitely before her on the line, how come she's now in front of me?"I refused to speak to her. This was ridiculous enough as it is. I'd simply come here because I didn

BlueFuck. As if the mess I was in wasn't enough, I was back in New York and..A horn blared in my ears, and I turned so fast, my ankle twinged with the pain. The car whistled to a stop, just inches before my quivering knees. The driver behind the wheel glaring at me.He jumped out of his car, his face red with anger and approached me with the thinly veiled dislike New Yorkers always had on their face.I came to, and stared around, the hazy blanket draped over my awareness dropping away.I was standing in the middle of the road. And the man had almost hit me."Are you crazy? You want to die?!" He yelled, his hands balled into fists.I walked away from him, afraid and in shock. How had I returned here so fast? I'd blinked and all of a sudden, was out of Kandare. My eyes struggled to get used to the busy road brimming with people. This was the evening rush hour.People walked past me in streams, knocking into me and hurrying past without stopping to apologise.Everyone was always in a h
