"Would you care for another ride?"

My heart does an uncomfortable flip, but I didn't say anything. I just stood there holding my melting tub of ice cream, trying to look casual.

Jason approached the operator and smiled. "Hi, can you arrange another ride? I'd like to join this one."

The operator looked uncertain. He glanced at me, probably checking if I was okay with this.

I should say no and tell Jason that I wanted to be alone. But instead, I found myself nodding.

Jason's smile was tight as he gestured for me to enter first. "After you."

I stepped into the cable car again, and Jason climbed in after me, the door closed with a soft click. The cable car lurched forward again, with Jason sitting on the bench seat opposite mine.

I immediately turned to look out the window, clutching the ice cream tub against my chest like a shield, I could feel his eyes in me, but I refused to meet it.

"Your ice cream is melting." Jason said after a moment.

I didn't respond. I just kept staring o

I rushed through the hospital doors, my heels clicking frantically against the linoleum floor. Jason was right behind me, his hand on the small of my back guiding me forward as I scanned desperately for my family. Then I saw them clustered in the waiting area outside the ICU. My mother was crying into my father's shoulder. And Julien was standing apart from them with his arms crossed."Mom!" I called out, hurrying toward them.My mother looked up, her face streaked with tears, and immediately reached for me. I fell into her embrace, feeling her body shake with sobs."What happened?" I asked, my voice breaking. "Please, tell me what happened."My father's voice was steady but strained when he answered. "He had a heart attack. We were having dinner, and he just... clutched his chest and collapsed. The ambulance got there quickly, but-" His voice cracked. "It was bad, Alessa."I felt like I couldn't breathe. My grandfather who was about the strongest person I knew was now lying in a ho

I pulled up to Jason's house, the familiar sight of it bringing a sense of comfort I desperately needed after the tension of the day. He opened the door before I could even knock, his smile warm and welcoming."Hey," he said, stepping aside to let me in. "Perfect timing. I'm just starting dinner.""You're cooking again?" I asked, following him toward the kitchen. "I'm starting to think you missed your calling as a chef.""Please. I can make about five dishes well. Beyond that, it's takeout territory." He handed me a glass of wine. "But tonight's pasta carbonara, and that's one of my five."I settled onto one of the bar stools at his kitchen island, watching as he moved around the kitchen. There was something incredibly attractive about watching him cook. From the way his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, the focused expression on his face as he whisked eggs and grated cheese."Need any help?" I offered."You can keep me company," he said. "That's enough help."I sipped my wine, f

I was walking to the boardroom with Lisa beside me, my heels clicking confidently against the marble floor. People we passed in the hallway stopped what they were doing, nodding respectfully, some even stepping aside to let us pass."Good morning, Ms. James.""Congratulations again, Ms. James."Lisa leaned in close, a smile playing at her lips. "This feels good, doesn't it? The respect?"I snorted softly. "Don't get too used to it. Power is fickle. Today they're bowing, tomorrow they could be plotting.""Ever the optimist," Lisa teased. We reached the boardroom doors, and Lisa pushed them open for me. The moment I stepped inside, everyone in the room stood up simultaneously and started clapping.I froze for just a second, overwhelmed. This was my first official meeting as heir to JR Corps. The weight of that title all crashed over me at once. But I couldn't show uncertainty. Not now.I smiled, and walked past my old director's chair, then I walked past Julien, who was standing at hi

Laura's POVWe were having dinner at one of the most exclusive restaurants in the city. The crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, soft classical music played in the background, and our table had a perfect view of the city skyline. It was a picture of bliss. Me, Jaime, and the children looked like the perfect little family.Except it wasn't perfect at all.Sara was struggling with her bib, the fabric twisted around her neck in a way that was probably uncomfortable. I leaned over, gently untangling it and securing it properly."There you go, sweetheart," I said, smoothing her hair."Thank you, Mommy," Sara said sweetly.Across the table, Jaime was completely absorbed in his phone, clearly not present mentally despite sitting right there. Michael was eating his pasta, his face was blank.I cleared my throat loudly. "Can I have everyone's attention, please?"Jaime barely glanced up. Michael continued eating. Only Sara looked at me with her big eyes."I just want to say something," I co

"Polly," I said gently, still holding her hands, "you need to understand something. Julien isn't just abusive… he's also a criminal."She looked at me, confused. "What do you mean?""Jason and I have been investigating him. We've found evidence that he's been embezzling from the company.” I squeezed her hands before adding. “And I mean hundreds of thousands of dollars funneled through fake vendors and shell companies."Polly's eyes widened. "Are you serious?""Completely serious. We have documentation, transaction records, everything." I leaned closer, letting her see the intention in my eyes. "He's not the man you thought he was, Polly. He's not the man anyone thinks he is. And you deserve so much better than someone who would hit you, threaten you, and steal from his own family."She was quiet for a long moment, processing. Then her expression shifted to something more determined."I'm going to end it," she said suddenly. "Tonight. I'm going to call off the wedding properly.”"Are

I was sitting cross-legged on Jason's living room floor, surrounded by papers, my laptop open on the coffee table, a half-eaten sandwich forgotten beside me. Jason was sprawled on the couch above me, his own laptop balanced on his knees, reading through the screen with intense focus."There," I said, pointing at a line item on one of the documents I had pulled from the company server. "Look at this transfer. Twenty thousand dollars to a shell company called JR Consulting which was disbanded several years ago.” Jason leaned down to look over my shoulder. "And the last transfer date was three months ago. I think the laundering started around a year ago.""Exactly." I pulled up another document. "And here's another one. Fifty thousand to 'marketing consultation' with a company that doesn't seem to exist when you search for it.""He's embezzling," Jason said flatly. "Your brother is literally stealing from your family's company."I felt sick. I had suspected Julien of sabotage and manip
