The divorce papers were waiting for her.

They sat in the middle of the dining table.

Neat.

White.

Perfectly arranged.

Almost as if they were just another business document waiting for Adrian Blackwood’s signature.

Elena stared at them.

She didn’t touch them.

She couldn’t.

Not yet.

Her eyes slowly moved across the first page.

Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.

Her heart sank.

For a moment…

She forgot how to breathe.

Then she heard footsteps.

Slow.

Steady.

Familiar.

Adrian walked into the dining room.

He looked exactly the way he always did.

Tall.

Perfectly dressed.

His black suit fitted his broad shoulders, and his dark hair was carefully styled. His expression was cold and unreadable.

The kind of face that had appeared on magazine covers for years.

The kind of man women dreamed about.

The kind of man Elena had once believed she would spend the rest of her life with.

He pulled out the chair opposite her.

Then he sat.

No greeting.

No explanation.

He simply looked at the papers.

“Sign them.”

Elena’s fingers tightened against her lap.

That was it?

After three years of marriage…

That was all he had to say?

She slowly lifted her eyes.

“You’re divorcing me?”

Adrian didn’t look away.

“Yes.”

One word.

Cold.

Final.

Elena gave a small laugh.

It sounded strange even to her.

“Why?”

“Because this marriage is over.”

Her smile disappeared.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It doesn’t need to be.”

He pushed the papers closer to her.

“Sign them, Elena.”

She stared at him.

This man had once held her hand beneath the moonlight and promised that she would never have to face anything alone.

She had believed him.

She had believed every word.

Apparently…

She had been the only one who did.

Elena looked down at the papers again.

Her name was already printed there.

Elena Hart Blackwood.

Soon…

It would no longer be her name.

She swallowed.

“Is there another woman?”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Elena noticed.

She always noticed.

She had spent three years studying every little change in his face.

Every sigh.

Every silence.

Every time his eyes moved away from hers.

She knew him better than anyone.

Or at least…

She had thought she did.

Adrian leaned back.

“That isn’t important.”

Elena’s heart cracked a little more.

“So there is.”

“Elena.”

“Who is she?”

He said nothing.

She waited.

The silence became unbearable.

Then Adrian finally spoke.

“Clara.”

Her eyes closed.

Just for a second.

Of course.

Clara Whitmore.

The beautiful woman from the Whitmore family.

Elegant.

Rich.

Educated.

Perfect.

The woman his mother had once called “the perfect match for Adrian.”

Elena opened her eyes.

“So you’ve already chosen her.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“This isn’t about Clara.”

She smiled sadly.

“Then why did you hesitate when I asked?”

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

He looked away.

Elena nodded.

She understood.

She understood everything now.

For three years, she had been fighting for a marriage that had already been dead in Adrian’s heart.

She had simply been too blind to see it.

Or perhaps…

She had seen it.

She just hadn’t wanted to accept it.

Three years earlier…

Elena had walked into the Blackwood mansion as a bride.

She had been nervous.

Happy.

Hopeful.

She remembered the white dress.

The flowers.

The cameras.

The way everyone had looked at Adrian.

He was the heir to one of the most powerful business families in the country.

And somehow…

He had chosen her.

At least, that’s what she had believed.

She had spent the first year trying to make him happy.

She learned his favorite meals.

She remembered his meetings.

She waited for him when he worked late.

She stayed awake when he traveled.

She defended him whenever his family criticized him.

When Adrian came home exhausted, she was there.

When he was angry, she gave him space.

When he was silent, she stayed beside him.

She had given him everything she knew how to give.

Her time.

Her patience.

Her heart.

And what had she received?

A husband who barely looked at her.

A mansion that never felt like home.

And a family that constantly reminded her that she was not good enough for Adrian Blackwood.

Still…

She stayed.

Because she loved him.

Or maybe…

Because she had been foolish enough to believe love could fix anything.

Elena looked at the divorce papers again.

“Did you ever love me?”

The question escaped before she could stop it.

Adrian became still.

For the first time that evening…

He didn’t have an immediate answer.

Elena waited.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Nothing.

That silence hurt more than a thousand cruel words.

She lowered her eyes.

“That’s enough.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“You don’t have to answer.”

She reached for the pen.

His eyes followed the movement.

Perhaps he expected her hand to shake.

Perhaps he expected tears.

Perhaps he expected her to throw the papers at him.

Elena herself wasn’t sure what she would do.

But when her fingers closed around the pen…

They were steady.

She signed.

One page.

Then another.

Then another.

Each signature felt like cutting a thread.

A thread connecting her to every memory she had tried so hard to protect.

Their wedding.

Their first dinner.

Their first Christmas together.

The night she waited for him until two in the morning because she had prepared his favorite meal.

The birthday when he forgot her entirely.

The night she cried alone in their bedroom while he slept beside her.

Everything disappeared beneath the ink.

Finally…

She reached the last page.

She signed her name.

Then she put the pen down.

Adrian picked up the papers.

He checked every page.

His expression remained unchanged.

“Thank you.”

Elena looked at him.

She almost laughed.

Thank you.

That was what he had to say?

After destroying her marriage…

Thank you?

She stood slowly.

“Is that all?”

Adrian looked up.

“What else do you want?”

Elena stared at him.

She wanted to say a thousand things.

She wanted to ask why she hadn’t been enough.

Why he had stopped looking at her.

Why he had allowed his family to humiliate her.

Why he had allowed another woman to enter their marriage.

Why he had let her love him alone.

But suddenly…

She didn’t want the answers anymore.

“Nothing.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Your belongings will be packed.”

“I’ll pack them myself.”

“You don’t need to.”

“I said I’ll do it.”

Her voice was quiet.

But firm.

Adrian studied her.

Something seemed different about her.

He couldn’t explain what.

Maybe because she wasn’t crying.

Maybe because she wasn’t begging.

Maybe because she wasn’t asking him to reconsider.

He leaned back.

“Where will you go?”

Elena looked at him.

“Somewhere.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It does.”

She almost smiled.

“Why?”

Adrian didn’t respond.

Elena nodded.

“Exactly.”

She turned and walked upstairs.

Their bedroom was silent.

Elena stood in the doorway.

She looked around.

Their bed.

Their photographs.

Her clothes beside his.

His watch on the nightstand.

Her perfume beside his cologne.

Everything looked normal.

But nothing was normal anymore.

She walked to the closet.

She opened it.

Designer dresses filled one side.

Most of them had been gifts from Adrian.

She touched one.

Then pulled her hand away.

She didn’t want it.

She took a simple suitcase from the top shelf.

Then she began packing.

A few clothes.

Some shoes.

Her documents.

Her mother’s necklace.

A photograph of herself before she had married Adrian.

That was enough.

She left the jewelry behind.

The expensive handbags.

The dresses.

Everything Adrian had bought for her.

She didn’t want anything that belonged to the woman she had been.

When she closed the suitcase…

She felt strangely empty.

But beneath the emptiness…

There was something else.

Relief.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But it was there.

For the first time in years…

She didn’t have to wait for Adrian.

She didn’t have to wonder whether he would come home.

She didn’t have to pretend everything was fine.

She was free.

The thought frightened her.

But it also made her heart beat differently.

When Elena returned downstairs…

Someone was waiting.

She stopped.

Clara Whitmore stood beside Adrian.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Confident.

She wore a cream-colored dress and held a small handbag in one hand.

She looked like she belonged in the mansion.

Like she had always belonged there.

Clara’s eyes moved toward Elena’s suitcase.

Then she smiled.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stared at her.

“For what?”

Clara hesitated.

“For everything.”

Elena almost laughed.

“Everything?”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“Elena, don’t.”

She looked at him.

“Don’t what?”

“Make a scene.”

A scene?

She looked around.

There was no screaming.

No crying.

No broken glass.

She had simply stood there and asked a question.

Apparently…

Even that was too much for him.

Elena looked at Clara again.

“Did you know?”

Clara lowered her eyes.

That was enough.

Elena nodded.

“So you knew.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“Don’t apologize.”

Clara looked surprised.

Elena walked past them.

“He’s yours now.”

Adrian suddenly stood.

“Elena.”

She stopped at the door.

She didn’t turn around.

His voice came again.

“Where are you going?”

She looked at the suitcase in her hand.

Then at the open door ahead.

“I don’t know.”

She finally turned.

Her eyes met his.

“But wherever I go…”

She paused.

“You won’t be there.”

For the first time that night…

Adrian looked unsettled.

Elena opened the door.

Cold air rushed inside.

She stepped out.

The door closed behind her.

The taxi was waiting outside the mansion.

Elena placed her suitcase inside.

Then she sat in the back seat.

“Where to, ma’am?”

She looked through the window.

The Blackwood mansion slowly disappeared behind her.

She wiped away the tear that finally escaped.

“Anywhere.”

The driver looked at her through the mirror.

“Anywhere?”

Elena nodded.

“Just drive.”

The taxi pulled away.

She didn’t look back.

She didn’t know what would happen next.

She didn’t know how she would survive without Adrian.

She didn’t know where she would live.

She didn’t know what kind of woman she would become.

But she knew one thing.

The Elena who had walked into Adrian Blackwood’s life three years ago…

Was gone.

And somewhere beneath the pain…

A new Elena was beginning to wake up.

Behind her…

Adrian stood at the mansion window.

He watched the taxi disappear into the night.

He didn’t understand the strange feeling in his chest.

He had wanted this.

Hadn’t he?

He had wanted his marriage to end.

He had wanted freedom.

He had wanted Clara.

So why…

Why did watching Elena leave feel like something had just been taken from him?

Adrian looked down at the divorce papers in his hand.

His eyes stopped at her signature.

Elena Hart.

He didn’t know it yet.

But one day…

That name would become impossible for him to forget.

And when that day came…

He would wish with everything he had that he had never let her walk away.
