The ballroom glittered beneath a canopy of crystal chandeliers.

Soft music drifted through the air while guests in tailored tuxedos and flowing designer gowns moved gracefully across the polished marble floor.

It was the annual Valmont Foundation Charity Gala, attended by Europe's wealthiest business moguls, politicians, philanthropists, and celebrities.

No one carried weapons inside.

At least, none that could be seen.

Sofia stepped out of the black sedan and adjusted the emerald-green gown hugging her figure.

Rosa let out a low whistle.

"If I didn't know you, I'd think you were about to steal every man's heartbeat in that ballroom."

Sofia chuckled.

"I'm here to represent the foundation."

"Mhm."

"And secure donations."

"Mhm."

Rosa folded her arms.

"You've said that three times already."

"Because it's true."

"It's because you're nervous."

"I'm not."

"You are."

Sofia sighed dramatically.

"I hate these events."

"You hate crowds."

"I hate pretending."

"You'll survive."

Rosa linked their arms.

"Now smile."

"I am smiling."

"No."

"Yes."

"That looks like you're planning someone's funeral."

Despite herself, Sofia laughed.

"There it is."

"What?"

"A real smile."

Across town...

A convoy of black luxury vehicles pulled into the underground parking lot of the Valmont Hotel.

Several bodyguards exited first.

Then Alessandro Romano stepped out.

His tailored midnight-blue tuxedo fit him perfectly, yet his expression suggested he'd rather be anywhere else.

Dante caught up beside him.

"You know you can leave after the speech."

"I'm counting on it."

"You hate charity events."

"I hate people pretending they're charitable."

Dante laughed.

"They're donating millions tonight."

"They're buying headlines."

A woman approached them carrying a clipboard.

"Mr. Romano?"

"Yes."

"The board would like you seated beside the Valmont family."

"Fine."

"And after your speech—"

"I'm not giving one."

She blinked.

"It was confirmed weeks ago."

"It was canceled just now."

Before she could protest, Alessandro walked past her.

Dante grinned apologetically.

"He wasn't asking."

Inside the ballroom...

Guests mingled beneath golden lights.

Servers moved through the crowd carrying champagne.

A string quartet played softly near the stage.

Sofia wandered toward one of the large paintings displayed for auction.

She tilted her head.

"It's beautiful."

A deep voice answered behind her.

"I think it's upside down."

She turned.

A tall man stood beside her, one hand tucked into his pocket.

Dark hair.

Sharp jawline.

Eyes the color of winter skies.

He looked at the painting again.

"Actually..."

He frowned.

"It might just be modern art."

Sofia laughed.

"I was trying to sound sophisticated."

"So was I."

They stood in comfortable silence.

Finally, Alessandro extended his hand.

"Alessandro."

She accepted it.

"Sofia."

Neither offered a surname.

Neither asked.

He looked back at the painting.

"What do you see?"

She studied the canvas.

"A storm."

"I see chaos."

"They're almost the same."

"Not quite."

She glanced sideways.

"What's the difference?"

"A storm ends."

His answer lingered between them.

"And chaos?" she asked.

"It stays."

She looked at him more carefully.

"You speak like someone who's lived through both."

"And you?"

"I've survived enough storms."

For a brief moment, neither of them looked away.

Across the ballroom...

Bianca Romano nearly dropped her champagne.

She nudged Eva.

"Aunt Eva."

"Hm?"

"Look."

Eva followed her gaze.

"Who's the woman talking to Alessandro?"

Bianca smiled.

"I have absolutely no idea."

Eva blinked.

"He's smiling."

"He is."

"I haven't seen that expression since..."

She stopped herself.

"Since before his mother passed," Bianca finished quietly.

Eva's eyes softened.

"Maybe tonight won't be so terrible after all."

Near the entrance...

Rosa spotted Sofia talking to the stranger.

She smiled to herself.

"About time."

One of the volunteers beside her looked confused.

"What?"

"I've known Sofia for twenty-two years."

"So?"

"I've never seen her stand still for five minutes talking to a man."

"Should we interrupt?"

Rosa looked across the room.

Sofia laughed again.

"No."

She smiled knowingly.

"Let her enjoy it."

Back at the painting...

"I've never seen you before," Alessandro said.

"I could say the same."

"You don't attend these events often?"

"I avoid them."

He chuckled.

"So do I."

"Then why are you here?"

"My company donated."

"So did my foundation."

"Ah."

He raised an eyebrow.

"So you're the charitable one."

"I try."

"What does your foundation do?"

"We help women and children."

His expression changed almost imperceptibly.

"What kind of help?"

"Whatever they need."

Shelter.

Education.

Medical care.

Safety."

He nodded slowly.

"That's... important."

She noticed the sincerity in his voice.

"You sound like you mean that."

"I do."

"Most people just say it because they're supposed to."

"I've met enough people who needed saving."

She tilted her head.

"Business?"

"You could call it that."

He offered nothing more.

Surprisingly...

She didn't press.

The auction began.

Guests took their seats.

Sofia found herself beside Alessandro purely by coincidence.

Or so they believed.

The auctioneer smiled brightly.

"Our first item..."

The evening passed between quiet conversations and playful remarks.

When one guest bid an absurd amount for a sculpture neither of them understood, Sofia leaned closer.

"Do you think he actually likes it?"

Alessandro whispered back,

"I think he likes people knowing he can afford it."

She covered her mouth to hide another laugh.

From the upper balcony...

Lorenzo De Santis watched everything unfold.

A bodyguard approached quietly.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"They've been talking for almost an hour."

"I can see that."

"Should we separate them?"

Lorenzo took a slow sip of his whiskey.

"No."

"They're from rival families."

"I know."

"Then why—"

Lorenzo smiled.

"Because hatred is powerful."

He glanced toward the couple below.

"But love..."

His smile widened.

"...is far easier to destroy."

Near the end of the evening...

Guests began leaving.

Outside the hotel entrance, rain had started falling.

Sofia stood beneath the canopy waiting for Rosa to bring the car around.

Alessandro walked out moments later.

He noticed she was watching the rain.

"You don't have an umbrella?"

"I forgot one."

He looked at the steady downpour.

"So did I."

She laughed.

"That's unfortunate."

A comfortable silence settled between them.

Then Alessandro removed his suit jacket and held it over both their heads.

"It'll have to do."

She looked up at him, surprised.

"You'll get soaked."

"So will you."

Together they walked through the rain toward the waiting cars.

For a brief stretch of time...

The world felt ordinary.

No enemies.

No expectations.

No family names.

Only two strangers sharing the same shelter from the rain.

Neither noticed the photographer hidden across the street.

The camera flashed once.

Then again.

And a third time.

Each photograph captured another moment of quiet happiness.

By morning, those images would be resting on the desk of a man who had spent twenty-five years ensuring that Romanos and Morettis could never know peace.
