TWO HOURS PASSED and after another shower, now I’m settled on a chair in Callan’s home office. After having dinner with him—without meaning to but it just happened. He told me about his parent’s plans to talk to me and then led me to the stairs. Still barefoot on the ground. I feel like a homeless girl way out of place inside this mansion. He opened the first door on the right and then motioned me to get in first. Didn’t think he’d have a few gentleman traits in him despite his lack of compassion. It looked like an entire room without a bed on it. Just a large sofa and a desk. The interior had minimal designs; I could say it was organized to Callan’s liking because when he stepped inside the room he was whistling. Then there was a wall that was made of entire glass from the ceiling to the floor which made anybody take a good look at the surroundings outside. As it was tinted no one could see us inside. White and black were the dominant colors inside this room. It was cold as the a
“DID I TELL you that it’s your turn to talk?” there was a tone of anger in the old man’s voice. With that glare, he did not look like he was just Callan’s father. There was something in him that roared more than the care of a father. An authority that demands silence when he commands.“No, father. But I’d like to differ on this matter of marriage between us two. I did not plan on getting married at 26. It’s like signing off my freedom into a—wench…”I gritted my teeth after he said that. Callan’s eyes met mine and we shared a glare of anger towards each other. This is not what I also want! If not for my father’s will and my mother’s request I would have long gone. But not.Slowly, my palms balled into firsts. This is not the first time that he insulted me but surely, this is the first time that I saw disgust in his face. As serious as he is right now, he looks like a kid demanding justice from his parents.I bit my lip to pretend from saying anything worse than what had already been s
SILENCE AND GRIEF filled my heart as I stayed up the whole night just to be there at my parent’s funeral. The maids served food to the guests that I didn’t even have the chance to talk to nor dared to ask questions which the answers I might not be able to prepare for. Some people looked at my direction from time to time. Men attempted to start walking to my side but when they saw Callan standing beside me, they hesitated to continue. No one could ever prepare for this. Not even myself. The ones that showed up looked like well-off people but moved in secrecy as they immediately left the place without any traces.“Those were businessmen that your father knew back when he was still alive,” Callan mumbled beside me while his eyes were looking far ahead.I nodded, even if I didn’t understand how my father managed to befriend businessmen in his line of work.Looking at Callan, having the urge to ask him that same question. I decided to back out. There’s no way he’d give me a decent correct
THE VIBRANT SUNRAYS adorned the sky as we gathered at the cemetery. I didn’t know who are the people that came along with us. Only I saw Callan’s parents stepping out of their car and the others followed. More than 10 bodyguards positioned themselves behind us while Callan stood beside me waiting for the couple to approach the small tent that was set up for a short ceremony.“We are with you in grieving this loss, dear.”“Thank you, Ma’am,” I mumbled as I got up to my seat. The gentle elderly woman leaned in to kiss my cheek. There were a few people that came with them and they all greeted Callan and shook hands. Four men also walked towards the tent. The two were hiding an unlit cigarette between their lips.“You are the daughter…” A sweet lady around the same age as my mother went near me and hugged me. “I’m your mother’s friend from the southern town, Yna.”I didn’t know what to say. My mother’s friend in the southern part of town? My parents didn’t mention anything. My parents di
A WEEK to make up my mind seemed not long enough. Three days already passed since the burial of my parents. I was staying at the ravij family’s mansion but I was stuck inside my room. I didn’t even bother seeing the other parts of the luxury mansion they had.I just sat with myself, contemplating the life I once had before it came to this. The kitchen island in our house… was my favorite spot. That’s where I can showcase affection to my family by baking cakes and cooking for my parents. I have always loved cooking. The same reason why I chose it as a career. I was about to apply for a cruise ship job as a chef next month, with the death of my parents… I don’t know what to do next. Would I still be able to do that? What now? Really… I grappled with my thoughts as I walked around the room.I could see from the window what had been happening outside. Callan was in and out of the mansion most of the time. Today was no different. With Callan’s father hearing about the explosion near the vi
CALLAN AND HIS MEN managed to fire several bullets at the white car before it disappeared from our sight. His other hand was pulling me close to his body, my weight on him as I hid my face onto his chest. I could feel his ragged breathing. After firing his gun, I felt his hand caressed towards my shoulders. But I did move. I couldn’t move from fear and shock. “Holy fuck, you’re bleeding, Esmé!” My eyes widened in shock. “Huh? Where?” I raised my hand to check my body—shoulders, stomach, thighs… until Callan removed his coat and used it to cover the side of my head. “Right there,” Callan said. Then he reached for my hand and covered his with mine before he lifted my feet off the ground as he started walking. I looked around as Callan carried me in his arms, some of his men followed us and the others kept looking at the gates and at a far distance checking if the vicinity was clear. “It was a miracle you made it here on time,” he muttered just focusing in front. He kept walking tow
CALLAN’S JAW tightened after hearing the words that came out from my lips. Our gazes locked at each other, not saying a word. Not knowing what to do with the tension rising between us.As silence engulfed the surroundings, I could almost hear my heartbeats in my ears—banging like a drum. What should I do next? Should I add to what I have already said? I wasn’t lying when I said that.Marry me, Callan. Never I have imagined that I would be the one saying that to a man. All my life, I have admired the idea of love from what I see in my parents. Love then leads to marriage that lasts for a lifetime, if not an eternity.Back when I was still in college, several guys had shown interest in me. It didn’t lead to long-term relationships, however, I managed to get to know love in its genuine form. I remember when I was in my third year of college, I flirted with a senior. That was the first time I had known how could light a fire inside a woman—how it pushes you to do things you wouldn’t thin
EYES WIDENED with shock; it wasn’t easy for me to take in the realization I just had. I inhaled a deep breath, feeling the urge to open the door and get inside but that would be a stupid idea. Instead of prying further on the meeting, I slowly closed the door and walked away faster than I ever could. One thing that I realized after hearing the things mentioned in that meeting was, there’s something serious going on and it’s causing too much trouble. They mentioned another family, is that their enemy? Because they were connecting the attack to them. Back when my parents were still alive, did they also participate in that meeting? I kept walking in the long hallways. Looking behind me and checking if anybody had noticed my presence earlier. Gladly, there was none. It didn’t take long for me to arrive in a hallway, which was new to my sight. I couldn’t probably be walking in the right direction back to the kitchen because on a corner there was another door. Would that lead to an exit
