(James)

I slide out of bed quietly and head into the nursery.

He’s blinking up at the ceiling. I don’t pick him up. I just say good morning, and his eyes move to me.

It’s really something to have this helpless life completely dependent on you to survive.

“Hey there, buddy,” I whisper. “You getting hungry yet?”

A few minutes later, Serena’s up too. I hear her head to the bathroom.

She smiles when she sees me. We fall into the routine we’ve established. She heats the bottle and I set out his diaper and clothing ready for his change.

I pick him up and take him to the rocking armchair.

Serena hands me his bottle. “I’ll turn the heating up a little. It’s chilly this morning.”

“Thanks. You can feed him if you want?”

“It’s okay. I’m going to shower and then we’ll have breakfast once the baby is changed.”

“Sounds great. You okay?”

“I am. I’m feeling more positive.”

We don’t mention what we’re talking about but we both know.

It’s peaceful feeding the baby and I imagine doing this with my own

(Serena)Meanwhile….“I wish you could’ve seen them,” I say, dropping a plate of Mom’s cookies in the middle of the coffee table and flopping onto the couch.“James looked like he’d been mugged by a bottle of tequila. Theo had his hoodie pulled over his face like he was in mourning. Ezra was sipping flat Coke like it was intravenous hydration.”“Wait, wait—Ezra?” Erin asks from the armchair. “Who’s Ezra?”“Oh yeah,” I say. “Ezra is the intern. He is hilarious and he does not have any filter when it comes to calling James out. I almost felt bad for his hangover status. Almost.”“I hope you yelled?” Haylee asks, eyes glittering with glee as she passes me a mug coffee she absolutely spiked with butterscotch schnapps.“I was a loud as I could be. Which wasn’t hard because I was so pissed. I mean, getting so drunk he had no clue what he was saying to anyone… But I still say it was Savannah.”However, true to their word, the media was gone when I got back here and Mom and Dad went off to th

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   136 Close Enough to Burn

(Savannah)The fire crackles low in the old Whitaker hearth, a faint wind moaning through the broken panes above us.The shadows stretch long across the stone floor, dancing across the soot-streaked walls.James lies back beside me on the old plaid blanket that was still shoved in the cupboard where we left it.He’s quieter than I expected. His head is turned toward the fire, one arm slung across his middle, hoodie sleeves pushed to his elbows. He looks wrecked. I think the running might have almost done us both in. We sure don’t have the fitness we did as kids.Leg day does not equate to running. But he’s here, with me.He likes this version of me. This old friend, young girl version of me. I don’t mind. The baby didn’t work so I pivot. But I’ll never be her again. I’ve learned my lesson. You can’t trust anyone. Not even those you love. Especially not those you love.My eyes are on the prize. Mrs. Hale. It’s who I was born to be and who I will be.I don’t fill the silence. Not yetTh

(James)The headache still hasn’t gone.I’m dressed and drinking water, can’t stomach food yet.The dull ache persists, but deep, like a bruise under my skull.I’ve had water, coffee, aspirin. I even tried sleep but Serena’s words are on repeat in my head. Did I say anything when I was out. I wish I could remember. Did Savannah leak it to the media? The AI system tells me Savannah is at the front door. Maybe I’m about to find out. I tell the system to let her in.Savannah comes into the sitting room where I’m spread across the sofa. She’s dressed simply. Hoodie, boots, tied-back hair. She looks like herself, or the version of herself I remember before everything broke apart. It’s actually nice to see her without makeup, fake lashes, and hair that doesn’t budge.“That was hectic,” she says. Her voice is calm. Unshaken.“Yeah,” I say. My voice is hoarse. “Tell me about it.”She walks in further and sits in the armchair. “Serena came to see me.”“I know,” I say. “What happened? She wa

(Serena)I step out of the west wing, the door slamming behind me.Not like we need to wave each other goodbye.I move toward my car with purpose, heels tapping softly on the stone path, my heart is still pounding. But I’m pleased I came here today.I don’t even make it to the driver’s door before I hear voices.Laughter. Then footsteps.Theo and Ezra exit the main wing. Theo’s suit jacket is on, he’s fixing his tie, as he slides back into the polished, press-ready version of himself.Ezra, on the other hand, looks like he’s ready to go to another bar. I like him a lot. He really razzes up the steadfast attitudes in Hale Tower. They both freeze when they see me.Ezra gives a low whistle. “Did you just stir the hornet’s nest? You go, girl!”Theo glares at him. “Ezra. This is not time for jokes. Shut up.”Theo steps forward before I can speak, expression hardening. “Serena.”I raise an eyebrow. “Theo.”“You threw words like ‘lawsuit’ and ‘exposé’ around.”I lean against the car, arms fo

(Serena)I walk right up to the private west wing entrance door and push the bell.Like she hasn’t already seen me arrive at the mansion. After a few seconds, the door opens.Savannah’s in one of her designer lounge sets, looking soft and deliberately maternal. She’s trying to sell the idea of a woman changed by motherhood. Her hair’s loose and glossy, makeup light, barefoot on polished floors like some curated version of domestic ease. She blinks fast when she sees me. “Serena…”“Don’t pretend you’re surprised,” I say. “You knew I was here.”Her smile twitches, tight. “I wasn’t expecting you on my doorstep.”“Technically, it isn’t your doorstep. Did you think I’d be too busy dealing with paparazzi to call you out?”She doesn’t respond. I step past her, into her little bubble of claimed space in the Hale mansion. She’s made it her own in here. She really thinks she belongs.I turn and face her, arms crossed. “I’m not here to pretend we’re friends.” I also have my phone recording the a

(Serena)I don’t wait for James. I walk straight into his office, still shaking with rage, and drop into the leather chair behind his desk.He stands beside me and brings up the security system on his desktop and clicks through until he finds the file directory. The first video is from what feels like a lifetime ago, the main courtyard. The camera feed is grainy and is slightly off-center, but parts of the audio is crystal clear. Other parts are muffled and scratchy.Margot’s voice crackles from the speakers: “Don’t get it in your head that getting knocked up again is a good idea.”My throat tightens. The tone in her voice still makes my skin crawl. Every word… measured, quiet, like a snake preparing to strike. There is nothing I like about that woman. Nothing.“Anything can happen to threaten early pregnancy… a fall. Ingesting the wrong medication. A car accident.”I grip the edge of the desk, knuckles whitening. James wasn’t even in the house that day. He never heard the way she thr
