The lights in the ballroom were shining blindingly. Too bright, too white. Each imperfection on my skin seemed enhanced. I re-tightened the strap on my dress for what had to be the third time, attempting to carry on as if I didn't have it twisted again. The room was packed with people: fake laughter, clinking glasses, the sound of heels hitting marble. I hated these parties, but tonight was different. Something was off.

And then I saw him.

Thane Orion Nightangle.

Tall, pointed, all black as always. My heart jumped without my permission. I attempted to look away, but I couldn't. And before I could finish staring, I spotted her.

Magnolia.

She rushed over to his side and grabbed his hand, clutching it like a snake that'd caught its prey. My stomach dropped. Of course she was going to be there. Out of all people, naturally it would have to be Magnolia Verlice.

My throat tightened. Memories hit me sharply—her jeering laughter outside the school hallway, the adhesive notes plastered on my locker with "fat cow" scribbled across it, the snickers that followed me wherever I went. She never left me alone. And now she stood beside Thane as if she was entitled to be there.

"Oh," Magnolia replied, her eyes locking onto mine. "Look what we have here. Nadira Evahart."

Her voice was saccharine, but I could sense the poison in her tone. She leaned forward, looking shocked. "I didn't know I would run into you at something this. opulent."

I clenched my fists at my side. "It's my family's fundraiser. I think I'm invited."

She laughed, too loudly, too falsely. "Of course, of course. How foolish of me. I simply thought you weren't the type for… public affairs. You know." Her eyes ran over me like I was an old dress she wouldn't buy.

I smiled once more, though it hurt. "Well, here I am. So I suppose you were wrong."

Her lips trembled. For a moment, she looked troubled, and I knew why. Her eyes had already scanned me from top to bottom. I was no longer the same. My dress fitted better, waist smaller, jawpoint clearer.

Thane's voice cut her short before she could utter another word.

"Nadira."

The sound of my name on his lips turned my stomach. His voice remained the same. Low and even and commanding. He wasn't glancing at Magnolia. Only me.

"You've changed," he stated flatly.

I took a breath. I wished I hadn't waited—for hoped—for something pleasant. Naturally, Thane didn't do pleasant.

He tilted his head, his eyes scanning me. "I thought you would be my rabbit. Now you're just my doll."

His words left a wound. The shame burned across my chest. A doll? Did he honestly believe this was a compliment?

I stood tall. "I'm not your anything, Thane. Not then, not now, not ever."

Magnolia's hold on his arm grew tighter. I saw it, and so did he. He didn't step back, though. His eyes never left mine.

He smiled. Not the nice one, but the one that revealed he wasn't being serious. "We'll see."

My throat ached, but I wouldn't allow him to see me weakening.

Magnolia gulped hard. "Thane, sweetheart, we have to go and greet the chairman. Don't delay."

He didn't move. His impassiveness destabilized Magnolia's smile.

Why are you even here, Nadira?" Magnolia insisted, taking one step forward. "You've always hated parties like this. Don't tell me you're trying to. fit in now?"

I shot her a flat look. "I don't have to try. I'm invited.".

Her laughter was sharp. "Belong? You?" She crouched closer, her odor acrid and suffocating. "Please. You'll always be the girl who dined by herself in the cafeteria, two lunches because one wasn't sufficient."

She struck me where I was vulnerable, memories flashing like blades. For a moment, I had shrunk. Almost. But not tonight.

"You could try improving your retorts, Magnolia," I said softly. "This one's stale."

Magnolia stiffened, the grin stuck on her face. I could tell she hadn't been anticipating me responding. She glanced upward at Thane, maybe seeking support, but his eyes never left mine.

Aunt Celestine interrupted before she could strike back once more.

"Good grief, isn't this. energetic," she said, sipping her wine. Her dress glimmered under the light, her face tranquil but alert. She looked at me just like she always did—like a jagged rock she was eager to throw away.

"Ah, dear Nadira," Aunt Celestine continued. "You have managed to surprise us. Who would ever have imagined you able to look so. respectable?"

I swallowed hard. Her tone was syrupy, but her purpose was not hidden.

"Thank you," I said tightly. "Change is possible, even when no one is expecting it."

She laughed. "Be careful, child. Sometimes change rouses shadows best left forgotten."

I glared, confused. "What are you saying?"

She simply smiled, taking a sip from her cup. "You'll see."

Magnolia rolled closer to her, muttering under her breath, and they laughed together. I wanted to scream.

I was turning away, my ribcage constricted, when a man pushed past. He had a server's jacket on, an empty tray held against his body. For a moment I didn't think anything of it—until he leaned ever so slightly and whispered in a voice only I could hear.

"Be careful. You don't know who you really are."

My heart ceased beating.

I turned back, but he was nowhere to be found, swallowed up in the crowd. I hastily scanned the room, peering into faces, but no one looked my way.

Thane's voice spoke once more, too close. "Is everything all right?"

I stepped away quickly, shaking my head. "Stay away from me.".

His gaze followed me out, calm but fuming. Magnolia gripped his arm, smiling for all the others, but she glared that he wasn't even paying attention to her. Aunt Celestine watched, her cold smirk on her face, sipping her wine as if she knew something I did not.

And the words circled in my head, over and over again—

You don't know who you really are.

For the first time, I realized that this was not everything about Thane. This was more.

And I was not ready for it.

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Lion’s Den

(Thane POV)I sat in the car across the street, knuckles tight on the steering wheel. Nadira had been walking for nearly forty minutes instead of taking the car. Forty minutes. My chest tightened, but it wasn’t anger at her—well, not entirely. It was frustration at myself.I watched her disappear into the narrow alley leading to that tech shop. That place. She shouldn’t even be there. Not for a second.I pulled my phone out, tracking her GPS. The little icon moved deeper into the district. My stomach churned. She wasn’t going home. She wasn’t going to school. She was going somewhere she shouldn’t.I remembered the conversation with my grandfather last night, sitting across from Archibald in the dining room.“You need to control her,” he had said, voice low but sharp. “If she doesn’t behave, the family fixers will take care of her.”I remembered the cold glint in his eye, the way he said take care. I had nodded like a perfect grandson, but inside, I’d been seething. I didn’t want her

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Ghost in the Machine

I didn’t look back at the black sedan. I knew the driver was probably on his phone right now, reporting to Thane that I was walking away. Let him. My heels clicked against the pavement, a steady, rhythmic sound that felt like a countdown.Every block I put between myself and that car made the air feel a little easier to breathe. But the image of the text message—Thane, Magnolia, and that smug caption—was stuck in my head like a bruise. "Already forgotten," it had said. I gripped my bag tighter. If he wanted to forget me, fine. I would make sure he remembered the day I became his biggest headache instead. The neighborhood changed the further I walked. The shiny glass towers of the business district gave way to older, grimy brick buildings. Neon signs flickered with missing letters, and the smell of expensive coffee was replaced by the heavy scent of grease and old metal. This was the tech district, the place where things went to get fixed or disappear.I found the shop tucked betwe

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Paper Shield

(Nadira POV)The apartment felt too quiet after Grandma V left. The kind of quiet that made every tick of the clock louder than it should be. I stared at the photo on the floor, the one with the red X slashed across it. My hands shook slightly as I picked it up again. It wasn’t just a warning anymore—it was proof that someone wanted me out of the game. That someone thought I was a threat.I hugged the photo to my chest for a moment, feeling the weight of it. In my first life, no one had cared enough to threaten me. I was invisible, weak, powerless. Now? Now, standing up for myself made me a target. That thought made my chest tighten.I grabbed a hollowed-out book from my shelf, slid the photo inside, and closed it quietly. Safe for now. I whispered to myself. Secrets were going to be my armor. If I was going to survive this second chance, I couldn’t let anyone see my weaknesses. Not even my father. Not even Thane.By the time I finished, the apartment felt too empty. I opened my lapt

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Visit

(Nadira POV)I was exhausted, feeling as though I'd been dragged through the mud by the time I reached my apartment door. My head raced from being spoken to all day, and my chest hurt from yet another blowout with Thane. I just wanted to fall across my couch and sleep for a week.I opened the door and stood in shock. There was someone on my couch. Not anyone."Grandma V?" I blinked. My not so secret investor. She was lounging with crossed legs, having a cup of tea as if she were at home. She looked totally at ease, like it was the most normal thing to do in the world to break into my apartment."Took you long enough," she said, setting her cup down. "I was starting to worry you'd skipped out."I allowed my bag to crash to the floor and rushed over. "You—you can't just lie here like that! How did you even get in?"She shrugged. "Keys. Connections. Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to."I chuckled despite myself and hugged her hard. "It's nice to see you.""Of course it is

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Breaking Edge

(Nadira POV)The car ride was silent except for the sound of the tires against the road. I sat with my arms folded, staring out the window.“You’re sulking again,” Thane said, his voice calm but edged with that usual firmness.“I’m not sulking. I just don’t like this arrangement,” I muttered.“You’re safer this way,” he replied without looking at me.I rolled my eyes. “I can take myself to school, you know. I’m not a child who needs escort duty every morning.”His hand tightened slightly on the wheel. “I already told you—until things settle, I’ll be the one dropping you off. The driver will pick you up after.”“I don’t want your driver either,” I snapped. He didn’t respond. That was Thane—once his mind was made up, there was no point arguing. Still, the silence between us felt heavier than usual. When the car stopped in front of the gates, I unbuckled quickly. “Thanks for the ride, boss,” I said dryly, pushing the door open before he could say anything else.I heard him call my name,

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   Fault Lines

(Thane POV)Patience had never been my strong suit, and Nadira was testing me to it in ways no one else ever had. With each moment I shared watching her and Beckett laughing at his stupid jokes, it tore at me. I told myself it was because Beckett couldn't be trusted. That was true—he wasn't innocent. But the jealousy underlying it was eating me alive, and I hated that I couldn't admit it.I put the thought to rest when I walked into the meeting room at Nightingale Tech. My team was already there. The table was covered with papers, photos, and laptops that were showing files I'd been looking forward to reading for days. Marcus was the first one to stand up, holding out a folder. "Boss, we've checked. The tampering of Miss Evahart's brakes was not accidental."I sat at the head of the table, unfolding the folder. Black-and-white pictures showed the bottom of her car, the clean cut of the brake line."Continue," I said to him."It was a pro, not amateur," Marcus continued. "They weren't
