LOGIN. Chapter 2
Fafane The restaurant was just as elegant as I remembered, with Crystal chandeliers shimmering overhead, soft music drifting through the room, and the scent of grilled steak and fresh herbs lingering in the air. Last time, I never made it past the parking lot. I had called Henry, apologized for agreeing to a blind date, and driven straight into the life that would eventually destroy me, not this time. “Good evening. Reservation?” the hostess asked with a warm smile. “Fafane Louis,” I told her my name. She glanced at her tablet before nodding. “Your date isn’t here just yet, but he’ll be arriving shortly. Would you like to wait at the table?” “Yes, thank you.” She led me toward a quiet corner near the windows. I wrapped both hands around the glass of ice water she placed in front of me, more to steady my nerves than because I was thirsty. This wasn’t really about a date; it was about proving to myself that I could make different choices. That my future wasn’t already written. The entrance doors opened for some reason, and I looked up to see a tall man step inside, rubbing the back of his neck. He was wearing dark jeans, brown work boots, and a fitted black button-down with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. His skin was a rich caramel brown, and his shoulders were broad enough to make the shirt strain across his back. He paused beside the hostess, offering an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry I’m late. Work ran longer than expected.” His voice carried easily across the room. The hostess smiled knowingly before pointing in my direction. His gaze followed for a second; neither of us moved. He wasn’t breathtaking in the polished, magazine-cover way Henry always tried to be. There was something better, something real about him. His clothes were clean, but not perfect. A faint smudge of oil marked the cuff of one sleeve, and despite clearly scrubbing his hands, there was still the slightest trace of grease near one fingernail. I almost smiled. He really had come straight from the mechanic’s shop. Instead of looking embarrassed, he walked toward me with quiet confidence. “I’m Quashawn.” His smile was easy, warm. “And you must be Fafane.” I stood. “It’s nice to meet you finally.” He hesitated for a fraction of a second before extending his hand. “I should probably apologize before we start.” “For being late?” I asked. He nodded. “A customer showed up five minutes before closing. I couldn’t leave him stranded.” Something about that answer made me blink. Henry would have left without a second thought, business first, and everyone else later “No apology needed,” I said, taking his hand. The moment our palms touched, a strange warmth spread through my fingers. It wasn't sparks or butterflies, just comfort. As though I’d met someone my soul had been searching for without realizing it. He seemed to notice it too because his eyebrows lifted ever so slightly. “You okay?” he asked. I quickly pulled my hand back. “Sorry.” He chuckled. “I’ve never had a handshake leave someone speechless before.” Heat crept into my cheeks. “There’s a first time for everything.” His laughter was deep and genuine; it made the tightness in my chest ease just a little. After we sat down, a waiter appeared with menus. “What can I get you two to drink?” “Lemon water is fine,” I said. Quashawn nodded. The same for me.” The waiter walked away, leaving us alone again. “So,” I began, “I heard you work as a mechanic.” One corner of his mouth lifted. “You could say that.” “You like it?” I asked him. “I love it.”There wasn’t a second of hesitation. “I like fixing things,” he continued. “Cars. Engines. Anything that people think is beyond saving.” For reasons I couldn’t explain, those words settled somewhere deep inside me, maybe because I wondered if broken people could be repaired too. Before I could stop myself, I smiled for the first time since waking up in my second life. It felt real. Across the table, Quashawn smiled back. Neither of us knew it yet, but one simple blind date was about to change both of our lives forever.Chapter 38 Quashawn This was the part of the month I hated being in a suit, sitting behind a desk. Listening to a room full of people tell me how I should run my own damn company. Worse, listening to some of them lie straight to my face about the monthly reports like I was some fool who didn’t know any better simply because I wasn’t here every day. That was the mistake people made with me: they saw the garage, my hands covered in grease, and the cars, and assumed I wasn’t paying attention to anything else. I knew exactly what happened inside Baker Enterprises whether I was sitting behind this desk or underneath a car. I wasn’t listening to a word my assistant, Norman, was saying as I scrolled through the rest of my schedule. It was full of meeting after meeting, then lunch, and my finger stopped. Henry Wilson. Well, well, I looked up. “Why do I have a meeting with Henry Wilson?” Norman immediately checked his tablet. “He has a business proposal that he believes would be benefi
Chapter 37 Fafane Sleep didn’t come easily. I tossed and turned, trying to shut my mind off with no success. It wasn’t until sometime around one in the morning that exhaustion finally won and I let myself sleep. The next morning, I woke up to the smell of coffee. Pushing myself out of bed, I followed the smell and found Quashawn already sitting at the table, dressed and ready for the day, reading something on his phone. “Good morning.” I sat across from him. He immediately put his phone down and looked at me with a smile. “Good morning. Get any sleep?” I shrugged and reached for the coffee. “I had enough.” He stopped buttering the toast in front of him. “That doesn’t sound promising.” I could see the worry slowly creeping onto his face. Ignoring it, I took a sip before putting the cup down. “It’s enough to keep me alive for the day.” Quashawn sighed. “Is something bothering you?” He went back to buttering the toast, but I knew he was waiting for an answer. How could I tell
Chapter 36 Quashawn Sitting behind the desk in my garage office, I couldn’t help smiling as I remembered having her here. In my space, not some fancy office or expensive restaurant, but the greasy garage where I spent most of my time, she looked comfortable. Now she had me wondering if there would ever come a day when I could convince her to crawl under a car with me. I smiled wider because there was hope. The office door opened without a knock, ruining my daydream. Malik walked in like he owned the place. I stared at the ceiling. “Don’t you have a job like normal people do?” He pulled out the chair across from me and sat down. “I am doing my job.” I frowned. “How?” “Annoying you is one of my favorite jobs.” He tossed a few M&M’s into his mouth. I reached across the desk and snatched the tray away from him. “If you don’t have anything serious to say, leave me alone.” He scoffed. “Your wife hired one of my guys.” That got my attention. “Who? And why?” “Because of the info
Chapter 35 Fafane This morning, I woke up feeling relaxed. Better than I had in a long time. Throwing the covers off, I headed for the shower before getting dressed. It wasn’t until I stood in front of the mirror fixing my hair that I noticed the small note stuck to the corner. I pulled it free. “ Breakfast is there. Early clients. Sorry we couldn’t have breakfast together. “.Quashawn. I sighed softly and looked over my shoulder at the breakfast waiting on the table. Without thinking, I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down to eat, humming quietly as I cut into my eggs. Strangely, the good mood stayed with me when I got into my car. Even when I pulled into the driveway of my family home, knowing exactly what kind of negative energy awaited me inside, my mood never changed. The moment I walked in, I found my parents and Tessa sitting in the living room. Of course they were all home; I don't know what I expected. Maybe an empty house would've been better. I guessed they n
Chapter 34 Quashawn After breakfast, I dropped Fafane off to get her car and watched her drive away before heading to the garage. As soon as I walked in, I knew something was wrong. My employees were gathered around the office, looking everywhere except at me. “What’s going on?” I asked, flipping through the pile of documents on my desk. “Boss, one of your customers is here,” one of them finally said. “What’s wrong with the car?” Silence met my question. I looked up. “Is nobody here able to fix it?” More silence. Jake finally pointed toward the waiting area. “She wants you personally.” The second they said that, I knew who it was. I dropped the papers on my desk and went to change before heading out. “Good morning, Ms. Fatima. What’s going on with the car?” I asked while we walked around her car. She leaned against it, her long nails tracing the hood. “It’s making a weird sound, and there’s a light blinking.” I made a note before checking the dashboard and looking under th
Chapter 33 Fafane Okay. Okay. I took a deep breath once I was inside the car and Quashawn closed the door behind me. I was ready for this part, wasn’t I? I mean, I went after the man. He agreed to marry me on one condition: we would be husband and wife in every sense that mattered. So why did I freak out when he said I would be going home with him? Let’s not forget he’d found us a house before the ceremony. I was the one who hadn’t gone to see it yet. Quashawn climbed into the back seat beside me, and suddenly all the air left my lungs. Was I having a panic attack? No. That couldn’t be it; maybe it was the adrenaline from everything that happened finally wearing off. I turned toward the window and watched the city pass by. I knew we’d said we would talk in the car, but all of a sudden, I didn’t want to. Quashawn didn’t push me; he didn’t ask what was wrong or demand that I explain myself; he sat beside me. Thirty minutes later, the limo pulled up in front of a luxury ho
