“Take off the ring, Elena. You’re not my bride anymore.”

The words hit harder than the slap that followed.

Elena Hart stood frozen at the altar, one hand still wrapped around the bouquet she had spent the morning trying not to crush.

Across from her, Daniel Reed looked completely calm.

He wasn't even ashamed.

He simply reached for the microphone and repeated, loud enough for every guest in the ballroom to hear.

“I’m sorry, Elena. I can’t marry you.”

A murmur swept through the crowd.

Elena slowly lowered the bouquet.

“Why?”

Daniel avoided her eyes.

Then a woman in a white dress stepped out from the crowd.

Elena's breath caught.

The woman walked straight toward Daniel and slipped her hand into his.

“She’s the reason,” Daniel said.

Silence.

Then someone gasped.

Elena stared at the other woman.

Her face was familiar.

Very familiar.

It was Sophia Bennett.

Lucas Bennett’s younger sister.

And she was wearing the diamond necklace Elena had given Daniel for his birthday.

Elena looked at Daniel's hand.

The ring she had placed there that morning was already gone.

“You brought her to my wedding?” Elena asked.

Daniel finally looked at her.

“I didn't want to humiliate you.”

Elena gave a small, broken laugh.

“You waited until I was standing in front of two hundred people to tell me you were leaving me.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always have a choice.”

Her voice shook, but she refused to cry.

Not here.

Not in front of them.

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Your family has nothing left, Elena. You know that.”

Her fingers tightened around the bouquet.

“What does that have to do with us?”

“Everything.”

He took a breath.

“My family has been carrying your father's debts for years. I can't keep pretending this marriage makes financial sense.”

Elena stared at him.

“So you chose her because her family is richer?”

Sophia smiled faintly.

“Don't make this about money.”

Elena looked at her.

“Then what should I make it about?”

Sophia's smile disappeared.

Daniel stepped between them.

“This is over.”

Elena's eyes burned.

“Fine.”

She pulled the engagement ring from her finger.

But before she could hand it to him, Daniel's lawyer approached.

“Miss Hart, there is another matter.”

Elena frowned.

“What matters?"

The lawyer opened a folder.

“Regarding Hartwell Properties.”

Her stomach dropped.

That was the last remaining asset belonging to her family.

“You said my father's property was protected.”

“It was,” the lawyer replied. “Until this morning.”

Elena's face went pale.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked away.

The lawyer continued.

“Ownership has been transferred.”

“To whom?”

He hesitated.

“To Reed Enterprises.”

Elena stared at Daniel.

“You knew?”

He said nothing.

“You knew?”

“I had to protect my family's interests.”

“You stole my family's last property.”

“I bought it legally.”

“You lied to me.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You're making a scene.”

Elena looked around the ballroom.

Everyone was watching her.

Some guests whispered behind their hands.

Others looked away.

Three years ago, Elena's father had been one of the city's most respected businessmen.

Then his company collapsed.

He was accused of fraud.

His accounts were frozen.

His friends disappeared.

And Elena's mother died believing her husband had destroyed their family.

Elena had spent three years trying to rebuild what remained.

She had trusted Daniel.

And now he had taken the last thing she had.

Her eyes filled with tears.

She blinked them back.

“No.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“No?”

Elena straightened her shoulders.

“You don't get to take everything from me and then tell me how I should feel.”

She placed the bouquet on the altar.

“Keep your ring.”

Then she walked away.

The ballroom erupted behind her.

“Elena!”

Daniel called after her.

She didn't turn.

She made it three steps toward the exit before a man's voice stopped the room.

“Wait.”

It wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Every conversation died instantly.

Elena stopped.

A man stood near the entrance.

Black suit.

White shirt.

No tie.

His dark hair was neatly pushed back, and his expression was so cold that the room seemed to become quieter around him.

Adrian Blackwood.

Thirty-one years old.

Billionaire.

CEO of Blackwood Holdings.

The most powerful man in the city.

And, according to every business magazine, the last man anyone should ever cross.

He walked toward Elena.

People moved out of his way without being asked.

Elena had seen him before in newspapers and on television.

But she had never stood this close to him.

He stopped in front of her.

His eyes moved briefly to the empty ring finger on her left hand.

Then to Daniel.

Then back to Elena.

“Are you finished?”

Elena frowned.

“With what?”

“Being humiliated.”

Her heart skipped.

She didn't know whether to slap him or walk away.

“Who are you to ask me that?”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“Adrian Blackwood.”

“I know who you are.”

“Good.”

He glanced toward the ballroom.

“Then you know what I can do.”

Elena folded her arms.

“I don't need another rich man telling me what he can do.”

“This isn't about telling you.”

“Then what is it about?”

“An offer.”

Elena almost laughed.

“I'm not interested.”

“You haven't heard it.”

“I don't care.”

Adrian leaned slightly closer.

“Your family's property can be recovered.”

Elena froze.

Her heart began pounding.

“What did you say?”

“Your family's property.”

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“Mr. Blackwood, this is a private family matter.”

Adrian didn't even look at him.

“I wasn't speaking to you.”

Daniel's face reddened.

Elena stared at Adrian.

“You can recover Hartwell Properties?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“That depends on whether you're willing to accept my terms.”

Elena narrowed her eyes.

“What terms?”

Adrian reached into his jacket and removed a black folder.

He held it out to her.

“Marry me.”

For three seconds, Elena couldn't breathe.

Then she laughed.

It wasn't because the proposal was funny.

It was because her day had become so absurd that laughter was the only thing keeping her from falling apart.

“You're insane.”

“Possibly.”

“You don't know me.”

“I know enough.”

“You just watched a man leave me at the altar.”

“Yes.”

“And your solution is to marry me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian's expression didn't change.

“I need a wife.”

Elena stared at him.

“That is the worst proposal I've ever heard.”

“It's not a proposal.”

He opened the folder.

“It's a contract.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Adrian, don't do this.”

This time, Adrian looked at him.

“Why?”

Daniel went silent.

Elena noticed.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Adrian turned back to her.

“You marry me for one year.”

“And then?”

“The marriage ends.”

“What do I get?”

“Your family's property.”

Elena's heart hammered.

“You're serious.”

“Completely.”

“Why would a billionaire need a fake wife?”

“My reasons are none of your concern.”

“Then why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn't.”

The answer shocked her.

Adrian's gaze remained steady.

“You don't need to trust me, Elena. You only need to decide whether you want revenge badly enough.”

Her breath caught.

He knew her name.

He knew about the property.

He knew exactly what she had lost.

“How do you know so much about me?”

Adrian said nothing.

Elena looked at the contract.

A one-year marriage.

Her family's property in exchange.

It sounded impossible.

It sounded dangerous.

It also sounded like the only chance she had left.

She looked over Adrian's shoulder.

Daniel was staring at the contract.

Not Elena.

The contract.

And for the first time that day, Elena saw fear in his eyes.

That made her decision.

She snatched the folder from Adrian.

“Where do I sign?”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Elena, don't.”

She turned toward him.

“Why?”

He stopped.

“Because you don't know what you're getting yourself into.”

Elena smiled bitterly.

“Neither did I when I agreed to marry you.”

Daniel's face went pale.

Elena turned back to Adrian.

“Give me a pen.”

Adrian handed her one.

Her fingers trembled as she signed.

Elena Hart.

The ballroom was silent.

Adrian took the contract.

He glanced at her signature.

Then he signed beneath it.

Adrian Blackwood.

He closed the folder.

“It's done.”

Elena exhaled slowly.

She had just married a stranger.

A billionaire.

A man she couldn't understand.

A man who had appeared at exactly the moment her entire life collapsed.

She looked at him.

“One year.”

“One year.”

“No interference in my personal life.”

“Agreed.”

“No controlling my decisions.”

Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

“That's negotiable.”

Elena frowned.

“I don't negotiate my freedom.”

Something flickered in his eyes.

Respect.

Or amusement.

She couldn't tell.

“Fine,” he said.

“Then we have a deal.”

Elena turned toward the exit.

“Where are you going?”

She looked back.

“Home.”

Adrian's voice was calm.

“You don't have a home anymore.”

Her expression tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“Your apartment lease was terminated this morning.”

Elena stared at him.

“How do you know that?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he walked past her toward the waiting car outside.

“Pack your things.”

“What?”

“You're moving into my house tonight.”

Elena followed him.

“I never agreed to that.”

Adrian stopped beside the car.

He looked down at her.

“You agreed to the contract.”

“I didn't agree to become your prisoner.”

“You're not my prisoner.”

“Then where am I supposed to live?”

His gaze held hers.

“With your husband.”

The word sent an unexpected shiver through her.

Husband.

This was real.

She had actually married Adrian Blackwood.

But before Elena could respond, Adrian's phone rang.

He answered.

“Speak.”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Elena noticed.

His jaw tightened.

His eyes turned cold.

“What do you mean the file is missing?”

A pause.

Then Adrian looked directly at Elena.

For the first time since they met, the billionaire looked genuinely alarmed.

“Who took it?”

Another pause.

His face went completely still.

“Elena.”

She swallowed.

“Yes?”

Adrian lowered the phone.

“The person who stole the file…”

He stared at her.

“…left your name behind.”
