Elena stared at the message on her phone.

COME TO THE ORIGINAL VAULT. ALONE.

She read the second message again.

YOUR MOTHER'S REAL BIRTH RECORD IS WAITING.

Then she looked at Amelia.

“There's something you haven't told me.”

Amelia wiped her tears.

“I know.”

“Who were you before you became Amelia Rose Vale?”

Amelia looked toward Michael.

He lowered his head.

Elena's heart tightened.

“You both know something.”

Michael finally spoke.

“Your mother was not born with the name Amelia.”

Elena stared at him.

“What?”

Amelia sat down.

“My birth name was Eleanor Catherine Rose.”

Evelyn immediately looked up.

“Amelia…”

“No, Mother. I'm done hiding.”

Amelia turned toward Elena.

“I was adopted into the Vale family when I was very young. My biological parents disappeared, and I was raised believing the Rose family had died.”

Elena frowned.

“Then why did you become Amelia?”

“Because the woman who adopted me wanted me to have a different identity.”

“Who?”

Amelia looked at Robert.

He said nothing.

Elena turned toward him.

“Did you arrange that too?”

Robert nodded.

“I helped protect your mother.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Everyone keeps saying protection. Yet every decision has destroyed another family.”

Robert accepted the accusation.

“I know.”

Elena looked at Amelia.

“Who were your biological parents?”

Amelia hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Victor Rose and Eleanor Hayes.”

Michael's expression changed.

“That means…”

Amelia nodded.

“I'm your father's cousin.”

Elena stared at Michael.

“Your cousin?”

Michael nodded slowly.

“We discovered it years ago, but by then, Alexander had already altered the family records.”

Elena took a step backward.

“So my parents knew each other before I was born?”

“Yes,” Amelia whispered.

“And you still allowed me to grow up believing a completely different story?”

“I wanted you to have a normal life.”

Elena shook her head.

“I never had a normal life. I just had unanswered questions.”

Nobody responded.

Then Robert opened the door.

“The original vault is ready.”

Adrian immediately objected.

“She isn't going alone.”

The message had specifically demanded that Elena come alone.

But Adrian wasn't willing to let another family secret put her in danger.

Michael agreed.

“We go together.”

Robert shook his head.

“The vault will only open for the person whose original birth record is inside.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“I need to see it.”

He held her hand.

“Then we go together until the door. You don't have to face this alone.”

She nodded.

---

The original vault was beneath the oldest section of Blackwood Tower.

Unlike the modern chambers, this one had no electronic locks.

There was only a wooden door with seven names carved into it.

Elena recognized six.

Blackwood.

Vale.

Hayes.

Bennett.

Rose.

And another name that had been partially scratched away.

She ran her fingers over the damaged letters.

“What's this?”

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“The seventh family.”

“What was its name?”

Before he could answer, the door opened.

A voice came from inside.

“Eleanor Rose.”

Elena froze.

The voice continued.

“Your identity has finally returned.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Are you ready?”

Elena nodded.

She entered.

The room was small.

A desk stood in the middle, covered with old documents.

On the wall was a photograph of a young woman holding a baby.

Elena approached.

The woman looked exactly like Amelia.

But something was different.

She wore a necklace Elena had seen before.

The same necklace in the old photograph from the hospital.

Elena turned the picture over.

A handwritten note appeared.

TO MY DAUGHTER, WHO WILL ONE DAY RETURN TO HER NAME.

Beneath it was another sentence.

YOU WERE NEVER AMELIA ROSE VALE.

Elena turned toward Robert.

“Who was she?”

Robert looked at the photograph.

“Your grandmother.”

“My grandmother?”

“Your mother's biological mother.”

Amelia's voice came from behind them.

“That's impossible.”

Everyone turned.

She had entered the vault despite the warning.

Robert looked surprised.

“You weren't supposed to come in.”

Amelia ignored him.

She stared at the photograph.

Then she whispered,

“Mother.”

Elena looked at her.

“You recognize her?”

Amelia nodded.

“I saw her once when I was very young.”

Michael stepped closer.

“Who was she?”

Amelia swallowed.

“Her name was Rose Eleanor Hayes.”

The room fell silent.

Elena looked at the birth record on the desk.

It contained three names.

BIRTH NAME: ELEANOR ROSE.

REGISTERED NAME: AMELIA ROSE VALE.

ORIGINAL FAMILY: HAYES.

She looked at Amelia.

“So you were born into the Hayes family?”

Amelia nodded.

“Yes.”

Michael slowly sat down.

“That means the original inheritance wasn't created by seven unrelated families.”

Robert looked at him.

“No.”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“They were all connected through one family.”

Elena's mind raced.

“Then why create separate bloodlines?”

“To make sure no single person could control the entire inheritance.”

A small drawer suddenly opened beneath the desk.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Elena picked it up.

Her name was written across the front.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

My dearest Elena,

If you are reading this, then the family has finally discovered what I tried to hide. You were not born to inherit our fortune. You were born to end the arrangement.

Elena continued reading.

But there is one truth you must understand. Your mother was not the only child I gave birth to. I had another daughter. She was taken before you were born, and I was told she had died.

Elena's hands trembled.

She looked at Amelia.

“Did your mother have another daughter?”

Amelia shook her head.

“I never knew.”

Robert took the letter.

He read the final paragraph.

Then his expression changed.

“What?” Adrian asked.

Robert looked toward the door.

“Someone has entered the vault.”

A shadow appeared behind the glass.

Then a woman stepped inside.

She looked like Amelia.

But older.

Her eyes moved toward Elena.

And she spoke softly.

“Hello, granddaughter.”

Amelia staggered backward.

“Mother?”

The woman smiled.

“No, Amelia.”

She looked at Elena.

“I'm the daughter your grandmother lost.”

Elena's heart pounded.

“Who are you?”

The woman placed a photograph on the desk.

It showed two babies.

One was Amelia.

The other had Elena's face.

Underneath the photograph were three words:

THE ORIGINAL TWINS.

Elena stared at it.

Then the woman whispered,

“Your mother isn't the only person in this family whose identity was stolen.”

She pointed toward Amelia.

“And she isn't your biological mother.”

Amelia gasped.

Elena felt the world collapse around her.

Then the vault door slammed shut.

On the wall, a new message appeared.

MATERNAL IDENTITY — REVOKED.

Victoria Blackwood told me it was an acknowledgement of the original agreement.
