The mother behind the lie

Elena stared at the woman standing across the room.

Her face was almost identical to Amelia's.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

Even the same small mark beneath her left eyebrow.

But the woman's words had changed everything.

“Amelia isn't my biological mother?” Elena repeated.

The woman nodded.

“That's correct.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The stranger looked at her.

“Your older sister.”

Amelia shook her head.

“No. My mother had only one daughter before me.”

“She was told that.”

Robert moved toward the woman.

“Eleanor?”

The woman smiled.

“So you remember me.”

Robert looked shaken.

“I thought you had disappeared.”

“I did. Because you helped them erase my identity.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You know her?”

Robert nodded reluctantly.

“Her name is Eleanor Rose Hayes.”

Michael's face went pale.

“Eleanor Hayes?”

The woman looked at him.

“Yes, Michael. Your family has been searching for me without knowing it.”

Michael approached her.

“Are you saying you're my aunt?”

“I'm your mother's older sister.”

He stared at her.

“But my grandmother told me you died.”

Eleanor gave a sad smile.

“That was the first lie.”

Amelia looked devastated.

“Why didn't you come back?”

Eleanor's expression softened.

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Years ago. But every time I came close, Alexander made sure I disappeared again.”

Elena looked between them.

“Why would Alexander want to separate sisters?”

Eleanor turned toward the black book on the desk.

“Because our family carried something the inheritance agreement couldn't control.”

“What?”

“The original authority.”

Robert shook his head.

“That's not what the agreement says.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because you helped rewrite it.”

Robert lowered his eyes.

Elena was becoming impatient.

“Can someone explain what this has to do with me?”

Eleanor approached her.

“Your grandmother gave birth to two daughters. One was Amelia. The other was me. But there was a third child.”

Amelia frowned.

“Three?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor looked at the photograph on the desk.

“The third child was born after us. She was the one our grandmother intended to make the keeper of the original agreement.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“Who was she?”

Eleanor paused.

Then she answered.

“Your biological mother.”

The room became completely silent.

Amelia covered her mouth.

Michael stared at Eleanor.

“No. Amelia gave birth to Elena.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“Amelia raised her. She protected her. But the original birth record says something different.”

Elena looked at Amelia.

“Is it true?”

Amelia couldn't answer.

Her silence was enough to frighten Elena.

“Tell me.”

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know the truth when you were born.”

“What does that mean?”

“I was told you were my daughter. I loved you as my daughter. I never questioned the records until Alexander began changing everything.”

Elena stepped away.

“So you might not be my mother?”

Amelia reached for her.

“Nothing can change what you mean to me.”

Elena didn't reject her hand, but she couldn't bring herself to take it either.

Adrian moved closer.

“Let's find the original record before we accept anything.”

Eleanor nodded.

“That's why I came.”

She walked toward the desk and pressed a hidden button beneath it.

A compartment opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

She removed a document wrapped in cloth.

“This is the original maternity record from St. Catherine's Hospital.”

Michael examined it.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then he stopped.

“There's a problem.”

“What?” Elena asked.

Michael pointed to the date.

“The record was signed twenty years before the inheritance agreement was officially created.”

Robert frowned.

“That cannot be right.”

Michael looked up.

“It means the agreement was built around this birth, not the other way around.”

Elena felt a chill.

“Read the names.”

Michael swallowed.

“Mother: Rose Eleanor Hayes.”

“Child?”

He hesitated.

Then read aloud.

“Child: Elena Rose.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

Elena looked at the document.

“Father?”

Michael moved his finger down the page.

“Samuel Rose.”

Adrian froze.

“Samuel?”

Michael nodded.

“The same Samuel Rose who is your biological father.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrian stepped forward.

“That means Elena and I…”

Michael interrupted.

“No. Don't jump to conclusions. There were several people named Samuel Rose in the original family records. We need to establish which one signed this document.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Exactly.”

She turned the paper over.

A second signature appeared.

WITNESS: JONATHAN ROSE.

Elena stared.

“Jonathan knew?”

Robert answered quietly.

“He was present when the record was created.”

“Then why did he tell us Michael was my father?”

“Because he believed that was the safest identity for you.”

Elena looked furious.

“Everyone has been deciding who I am without asking me.”

Eleanor touched her shoulder.

“I know.”

A sudden noise came from outside the vault.

Adrian turned toward the door.

“Someone's coming.”

Robert checked the security panel.

His expression changed.

“It's Alexander.”

Michael moved toward the entrance.

“Lock it.”

Robert shook his head.

“He has the master key.”

A voice came through the speakers.

“Open the door, Robert.”

Alexander.

Robert pressed the emergency lock.

The screen displayed a warning.

ACCESS DENIED.

Alexander laughed from the other side.

“You still think you can keep me out?”

Elena looked at Eleanor.

“Is there another exit?”

“Yes. Behind the bookshelves.”

Adrian immediately moved toward them.

But before they could leave, the lights went out.

A second later, the door opened.

Alexander entered.

He looked at Eleanor.

Then Amelia.

Finally, his eyes settled on Elena.

“So,” he said, “you've finally met the woman who knows your real identity.”

Elena stood her ground.

“Who is my mother?”

Alexander smiled.

“Ask the woman who gave you away.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“I never gave her away!”

Alexander looked at her.

“Perhaps not willingly.”

He removed a folded document from his pocket.

Then he placed it on the desk.

Elena opened it.

It was an adoption agreement.

The names were clearly written.

BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: ELEANOR ROSE HAYES.

ADOPTIVE MOTHER: AMELIA ROSE VALE.

Elena's hands trembled.

She looked at Eleanor.

“Is this real?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

Amelia began crying.

“I didn't know. I swear I didn't know.”

Elena looked at her for a long moment.

Then she turned toward Alexander.

“Why show me this now?”

His smile widened.

“Because there is one more name you haven't read.”

Elena looked down.

At the bottom of the document was another signature.

ADOPTIVE FATHER: MICHAEL HAYES.

Michael stared at the page.

“No.”

Alexander laughed.

“You wanted to know why everyone lied to you?”

He leaned closer.

“Because Michael and Amelia didn't just raise you.”

His eyes moved between them.

“They signed an agreement to make you forget your real family.”

Elena looked at Michael.

He appeared completely devastated.

“Is that true?”

Michael opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, Eleanor suddenly grabbed the document.

She turned it over.

Her eyes widened.

“Alexander, you fool.”

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

“This isn't the original agreement.”

She pointed to a tiny mark in the corner.

“It's a copy.”

Then she looked directly at Elena.

“And the original was never signed by Michael or Amelia.”

Elena frowned.

“Who signed it?”

Eleanor's voice dropped.

“Your real parents.”

She turned the page toward Elena.

Two signatures appeared.

ELEANOR ROSE HAYES.

And beneath it:

SAMUEL ROSE.

Elena stared.

Then Adrian looked at the document.

His face changed.

Because the Samuel Rose who had signed Elena's birth record was not his father.

It was another man.

A man whose name had been deliberately erased from every family record.

And Alexander knew exactly who he was.
