LOGINThe words followed Elena all the way back to the Blackwood estate.
Victoria is not the one holding Amelia.
Then who was?
The mansion stood ahead of them, enormous and silent beneath the darkening sky.
Adrian stopped at the entrance.
“This is where she is?”
Richard nodded.
“If she is still alive.”
Adrian turned sharply.
“You said she was here.”
“I said someone was holding her here.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
Richard looked away.
Elena watched Adrian carefully.
He had spent his entire life believing Victoria was his mother. Now he had learned that Amelia Vale had given birth to him, Jonathan Vale was his biological father, and his entire identity had been shaped by a secret created before he was old enough to understand it.
Now he had been told his real mother might be somewhere inside the house where he grew up.
Adrian opened the door.
“Then we're going inside.”
Richard grabbed his arm.
“You can't.”
Adrian pulled free.
“Why?”
“Because the person guarding Amelia knows we're coming.”
A voice answered from behind them.
“Of course I do.”
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood at the end of the driveway.
She wasn't alone.
Two security men stood behind her.
Elena felt Lily move closer.
Adrian stared at Victoria.
“Where is she?”
Victoria's face was unreadable.
“Who?”
“Don't do this.”
Victoria looked at Richard.
“You told him.”
Richard said nothing.
Adrian stepped toward her.
“My mother.”
Victoria's expression changed.
For the first time, Elena saw something that looked like fear.
“Amelia is alive.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
The confirmation hit harder than any accusation.
“Where?”
Victoria looked toward the mansion.
“Inside.”
Adrian immediately moved toward the entrance.
Victoria raised her hand.
“Wait.”
He turned.
“She isn't alone.”
“Who is with her?”
Victoria hesitated.
Then she said:
“Alexander.”
Silence.
Elena's heart raced.
“Alexander Blackwood?”
Victoria nodded.
“But that's impossible.”
“Everyone thought he was dead,” Richard said.
Victoria looked at him.
“Everyone thought many things.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“You're saying my grandfather is alive?”
“He survived.”
“Where is he?”
Victoria pointed toward the mansion.
“Underground.”
Elena remembered the hidden archive beneath the old chapel.
The Blackwoods had built secrets beneath everything.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was protecting you.”
“You lied to me my entire life.”
“I kept you alive.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“That's not protection.”
Victoria looked at Elena.
“You think I'm the villain.”
Elena said nothing.
Victoria continued.
“I made terrible choices. But every choice was made because Alexander threatened to destroy anyone who tried to expose him.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Then why is Amelia still here?”
Victoria looked down.
“Because Alexander believes she knows where Jonathan hid the final proof.”
Catherine stepped forward.
“What proof?”
Victoria looked at her.
“The original inheritance record.”
Catherine's face changed.
“The document proving Jonathan was the rightful heir.”
Victoria nodded.
“And the person who possesses it controls the agreement.”
Elena understood.
“That is why everyone wants me.”
Victoria looked directly at her.
“Yes.”
“And Lily?”
Victoria's expression softened.
“Lily is the bloodline Alexander fears most.”
Adrian looked toward the mansion.
“Take me to Amelia.”
Victoria shook her head.
“If you go in there, Alexander will know the agreement has been activated.”
“Then let him know.”
“Adrian—”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“I spent thirty years believing a lie. I'm not going to spend another minute waiting for permission to meet my own mother.”
Victoria looked at him for a long moment.
Then she moved aside.
“Go.”
Adrian entered.
Elena followed.
Catherine, Richard, and Lily came behind them.
The mansion felt different now.
Every corridor seemed darker.
Every portrait looked like it was hiding something.
Victoria led them toward a staircase Elena had never seen before.
At the bottom was a steel door.
She entered a code.
The door opened.
A narrow corridor stretched beneath the mansion.
Elena heard Lily whisper.
“Mom, I don't like this place.”
“Stay close.”
They reached another door.
Victoria stopped.
“She is behind this.”
Adrian stared at it.
His hand trembled as he reached for the handle.
Then a voice came from inside.
“Adrian?”
He froze.
The voice was soft.
Weak.
But unmistakably familiar.
Not because he remembered it.
Because something inside him recognized it.
“Mom?”
The door opened.
A woman sat beside a small table.
Her hair was longer than Elena remembered from the photographs.
Her face was older.
But her eyes were the same.
Adrian stood motionless.
The woman looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“My son.”
Adrian couldn't move.
Amelia slowly stood.
“You came.”
He finally stepped forward.
“You're really my mother?”
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian's voice broke.
“Why did you leave me?”
Amelia looked at Victoria.
Then at Richard.
“I didn't.”
Adrian stopped.
“What?”
“I never left you.”
She pointed toward the door behind him.
“Someone took you from me.”
Adrian turned toward Victoria.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Amelia continued.
“Alexander ordered it.”
Richard lowered his head.
Adrian stared at him.
“You knew.”
Richard whispered:
“I was there.”
Adrian's expression shattered.
“You watched them take me?”
Richard couldn't answer.
Amelia walked toward Adrian.
“I fought.”
She touched his face.
“I begged them not to take you.”
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
“Then why didn't you find me?”
“I tried.”
Amelia's voice trembled.
“But every time I got close, someone moved you.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Who?”
Amelia looked at her.
“Alexander.”
Elena felt a chill.
“But Alexander was supposed to be dead.”
Amelia shook her head.
“He wasn't.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
A lock clicked.
The door behind them slammed shut.
Victoria turned.
“No.”
A voice came through the darkness.
“You should never have opened that door.”
Elena held Lily tightly.
Adrian moved in front of Amelia.
The voice continued.
“Now the entire family will finally pay for what they did to Jonathan.”
Adrian stared at the message.DON'T TRUST DANIEL. HE KNOWS WHO THE CHILD IS BECAUSE HE HELPED HIDE HIM.Daniel watched him.“What's wrong?”Adrian turned the phone around.“Richard says you helped hide the fourth child.”Daniel's expression barely changed.“Richard doesn't know what he's talking about.”“Then why is he warning me about you?”“Because he wants to turn you against me.”Elena stepped forward.“Enough. We need the truth, not another argument.”Daniel looked at her.“I've spent years protecting you.”“By lying to me?”“By keeping you alive.”The words silenced her.Margaret moved closer to Daniel.“You knew Isabella?”Daniel nodded.“She was my wife's sister.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”“Because Isabella made me promise never to reveal what happened to her child.”Margaret's eyes filled.“You let me believe she disappeared without explanation.”“She had to.”“Why?”Daniel opened his mouth, but Adrian's phone rang again.Richard.This time Adrian answered and put the ca
Margaret stared at Evelyn.“That's not true.”Evelyn didn't look away.“You know exactly who I'm talking about.”“No, I don't.”“Margaret, please. We've hidden enough.”Margaret shook her head.“I have spent years trying to understand what happened in that hospital. I raised Elena believing she was my daughter. I lost Matthew. I watched Daniel build a life around secrets. But I have never knowingly hidden another child.”Elena stepped closer.“Grandma, who is the fourth child?”Evelyn looked at her.“Someone who grew up believing they had no connection to the Vale family.”“Then tell us their name.”“I can't.”Charles gave a frustrated laugh.“Of course you can't. You appear with another mystery, make accusations, and expect everyone to believe you.”Evelyn turned toward him.“You know more than you're admitting.”“And you know less than you pretend.”Jonathan stepped between them.“Enough. We need to establish what happened before another person gets hurt by these lies.”Adrian picke
Elena couldn't move.Evelyn stood at the entrance, holding the photograph against her chest. For years, the family had searched for her. Some believed she was dead. Others believed she had abandoned them. But she was standing there.Alive.And apparently, carrying another secret.“What do you mean?” Elena finally asked. “What other child did you take?”Evelyn looked around the room.“Before I answer, I need everyone to understand something. The hospital records were not changed to protect one child. They were changed to protect several.”Catherine stepped forward.“You took my daughter.”“I saved your daughter.”“You separated me from her!”Evelyn lowered her eyes.“I know.”Catherine's voice broke.“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”“I do. And I have regretted it every day.”Charles moved closer.“You don't get to return after all these years and pretend you were protecting everyone.”Evelyn looked at him.“You're the last person who should question my decisions.”Charles's
Jonathan didn't move. The message remained on Adrian's phone, its words hanging over the room like a threat.ASK JONATHAN WHO HE BURIED TWENTY YEARS AGO.Elena stared at him.“Who did you bury?”Jonathan looked away.“Someone who should have stayed dead.”Catherine's eyes widened.“Jonathan!”He raised a hand.“Not here.”Charles stepped forward.“No. We're done hiding things. Tell us who was buried.”Jonathan's jaw tightened.“Michael Hayes.”Margaret gasped.Catherine staggered backward.“No,” she whispered. “Michael was alive when I was told he died.”Jonathan nodded.“I know.”Elena looked between them.“Then whose funeral did you attend?”Jonathan took a slow breath.“His brother's.”Adrian frowned.“Margaret just said the man she married wasn't Michael. Are you saying she married his brother?”Jonathan nodded.“Yes.”Margaret shook her head.“That's not what he told me.”“What did he tell you?” Elena asked.Margaret looked confused.“He introduced himself as Michael. He had Mich
The room fell silent.Elena stared at Margaret.“Michael Hayes was your husband?”Margaret nodded slowly.“Before I married Daniel, yes.”Catherine took a step forward.“That isn't possible.”Margaret turned toward her.“I wish it weren't.”“You told me Michael died before I discovered I was pregnant.”“I know what you were told.”Catherine's eyes filled with anger.“Then explain why you were married to him.”Margaret looked down at the photograph in Elena's hands.“Because someone needed to give him a reason to disappear.”Jonathan's expression hardened.“Margaret, be careful.”She ignored him.“Michael was already in danger when I met him. He had discovered something about the original inheritance agreement. Something that could have destroyed the Vale family.”Charles folded his arms.“And you expect us to believe you married him to protect him?”“No,” Margaret replied. “I married him because he asked me to.”Catherine shook her head.“Why would he ask you?”“Because he needed a le
Catherine read the message again.HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Then she looked at Jonathan.“Who was my daughter's father?”Jonathan's expression became guarded.“I thought Charles was.”“So did I,” Catherine replied. “But Evelyn wouldn't have written that unless she knew something.”Adrian examined the photograph.“Could the message be referring to another man?”Richard shook his head.“The photograph was taken years after the child was born. Whoever wrote this wanted Catherine to understand that the truth had been hidden deliberately.”Samuel looked towards Catherine.“Did you have another relationship before Charles?”Catherine hesitated.“There was someone. But I was told he died before I discovered I was pregnant.”Jonathan stepped closer.“Who was he?”Catherine looked at him.“His name was Michael.”The name meant nothing to Elena. But Daniel, who had remained silent near the doorway, suddenly raised his head.“Michael what?”Catheri
