The alarm continued screaming through the Blackwood estate.

Elena could barely hear her own thoughts.

The child in the photograph… may be you.

Catherine's words repeated in her mind.

Adrian stared at the photograph.

“That's impossible.”

Catherine shook her head.

“I said it may be true. We need proof.”

Elena looked at Amelia.

“Did Jonathan ever tell you about another child?”

Amelia looked devastated.

“No.”

“Think.”

“I would remember.”

Elena turned the photograph over again.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

ELENA ROSE VALE.

Her name.

Her exact name.

Daniel had always told her she was Elena Rose Bennett because he had given her the Bennett surname.

But what if the name Rose Vale had existed before Daniel?

What if someone had deliberately erased her real identity?

Richard suddenly spoke.

“There is something you don't know.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“When you were born, Daniel didn't receive you from your mother.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“What are you saying?”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Alexander took you.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“That's not possible.”

Richard shook his head.

“It happened.”

Catherine stared at him.

“You knew?”

“I discovered it years later.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“Then where was my mother?”

Richard looked at Amelia.

“She was looking for you.”

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

“I searched for years.”

Elena couldn't speak.

All her life, she had believed her parents had simply raised her.

Now she was discovering that her childhood had been built around a disappearance.

A stolen identity.

A hidden bloodline.

And possibly another heir.

Adrian gently touched Elena's shoulder.

“We'll find the truth.”

She looked at him.

“How many truths are there left?”

Before Adrian could answer, footsteps echoed above them.

Victoria rushed down the stairs.

“We have to leave.”

Catherine turned.

“What happened?”

“The security system has been breached.”

Richard frowned.

“By whom?”

Victoria looked toward the ceiling.

“Alexander's people.”

Adrian immediately moved toward Lily.

“Stay with Elena.”

Lily nodded.

They hurried through the underground corridor.

When they reached the main hall, the mansion was already in chaos.

Security alarms flashed.

Doors were locking and unlocking.

Several rooms had been emptied.

Victoria looked at Richard.

“Where is the archive?”

Richard hesitated.

“Destroyed.”

Victoria's face changed.

“You're lying.”

“I moved it.”

“Where?”

Richard looked at Elena.

“Somewhere Alexander can never find it.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Where?”

Richard pulled a small key from his pocket.

“The old chapel.”

Catherine immediately understood.

“The archive beneath the chapel.”

Richard nodded.

“But we can't go there.”

“Why?”

“Because Alexander knows about it now.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Then where do we go?”

Richard answered:

“The Vale estate.”

Everyone went silent.

The location Alexander had shown them.

The trap.

The place where the final inheritance record was hidden.

Elena looked at Lily.

Then at Adrian.

“We go.”

Catherine shook her head.

“It's dangerous.”

“So is staying here.”

Amelia took Elena's hand.

“You don't have to do this.”

Elena looked at her.

“I've spent my entire life being protected from the truth.”

She glanced at the photograph.

“I'm done running from it.”

Adrian nodded.

“We go together.”

They left the mansion through a hidden passage.

The old road toward the Vale estate was nearly empty.

Rain began falling as they approached the property.

The estate appeared abandoned.

Broken windows.

Overgrown gardens.

A rusted gate hanging from one hinge.

Catherine stopped outside.

“This place hasn't been occupied for decades.”

Elena looked at the house.

“Then why would Alexander send us here?”

Richard answered.

“Because something inside still belongs to Jonathan.”

They entered.

The air smelled of dust and old wood.

Lily stayed close to Elena.

Adrian searched the rooms.

“Nothing.”

Catherine walked toward the fireplace.

She stopped.

“Wait.”

There was a symbol carved into the stone.

The crown.

She pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

Elena stepped closer.

“That's it?”

Catherine picked it up.

“No.”

She turned it over.

There was another inscription.

ONLY THE TRUE BLOODLINE CAN OPEN THIS.

Adrian tried.

Nothing happened.

Catherine tried.

Nothing.

Richard tried.

Nothing.

Then Elena touched the box.

A click sounded.

Everyone froze.

The lid opened.

Inside was a single document.

And beneath it was another photograph.

Elena picked up the photograph.

Her hands began shaking.

It showed Jonathan.

Amelia.

A baby.

And another woman.

Elena recognized her.

“Margaret.”

Amelia stared.

“No.”

Catherine stepped closer.

“Who is that beside her?”

Elena turned the photograph.

A name was written underneath.

MARGARET VALE — GUARDIAN OF THE SECOND HEIR.

Elena's heart raced.

“The second heir was me.”

Catherine nodded slowly.

“But if you were the second heir…”

Adrian looked at her.

“Who was the first?”

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Someone was walking through the house.

Slowly.

Coming toward them.

Then a man's voice echoed through the hallway.

“You finally found it.”

Elena looked toward the doorway.

A shadow appeared.

The man stepped into view.

It was Alexander Vale.

Jonathan's son.

He looked at Elena.

Then smiled.

“You have no idea what that document means.”

He held out his hand.

“Give it to me.”

Elena tightened her grip.

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“Then you will learn why your family spent twenty-eight years hiding you.”

Chapter 36

:::writing{variant="document" id="84165" title="Chapter 36 — The Second Heir"} Alexander Vale stood in the doorway.

Nobody moved.

Elena held the document tightly against her chest.

Adrian stepped in front of her.

“Stay away from her.”

Alexander smiled.

“You sound exactly like Jonathan.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You knew my father.”

“I knew him better than anyone.”

“You said he was dead.”

“He is.”

“Then why are you here?”

Alexander looked at him.

“Because someone has to finish what he started.”

Catherine stepped forward.

“You're lying.”

Alexander laughed softly.

“You always did hate the truth.”

Catherine's eyes narrowed.

“What truth?”

“That Jonathan wasn't the only person betrayed.”

He looked at Elena.

“She was.”

Elena's voice was steady.

“What happened to me?”

Alexander's expression became serious.

“You were hidden.”

“By whom?”

“Everyone.”

She shook her head.

“Why?”

“Because you were dangerous.”

Elena frowned.

“I'm not dangerous.”

“To Alexander Blackwood, you were.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Explain.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You still protect him after everything?”

Richard said nothing.

Alexander continued.

“Jonathan discovered that Alexander Blackwood had stolen control of the family trust.”

Catherine nodded.

“We know that.”

“No.”

Alexander's voice sharpened.

“You know part of it.”

He pointed toward the document.

“That is the original inheritance record.”

Elena looked down.

“What does it prove?”

“That Elena was named as the second protected heir.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked at Catherine.

“Why would Elena be named?”

Catherine's voice was barely audible.

“Because Jonathan anticipated Alexander's betrayal.”

Alexander nodded.

“Jonathan knew he might not survive.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“He would never have abandoned his children.”

“He didn't.”

Alexander looked at her.

“He tried to protect them.”

Elena's heart pounded.

“My children?”

Alexander looked at her.

“You and Adrian.”

Adrian's face changed.

“Then Elena and I were both protected?”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

“Because Jonathan knew Alexander would come after his bloodline.”

Elena looked at the photograph.

“So Margaret protected me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“Because she was threatened.”

“By Alexander?”

Alexander nodded.

“He threatened everyone.”

Richard lowered his head.

Elena looked at him.

“And you?”

Richard swallowed.

“I helped hide you.”

“Why?”

“To keep you alive.”

Elena's eyes filled with anger.

“You stole my life.”

Richard didn't defend himself.

“I know.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“You want to know why Daniel raised you?”

Elena turned toward him.

“Yes.”

“Because Daniel was the only man Alexander trusted.”

Elena shook her head.

“Daniel loved me.”

“I never said he didn't.”

Alexander's voice softened.

“He was told that if he ever revealed your true identity, you would disappear permanently.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

Elena finally understood.

Her childhood had been protected by lies.

Not because nobody loved her.

But because everyone believed the truth would kill her.

A sudden sound came from outside.

Alexander looked toward the window.

“We don't have much time.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Why are you helping us?”

Alexander looked at him.

“I'm not.”

He pointed at Elena.

“I'm protecting what belongs to Jonathan.”

Elena held the document.

“What do you want?”

“The inheritance restored.”

“And after that?”

“The Blackwood empire collapses.”

Catherine stared at him.

“You want to destroy everything.”

Alexander nodded.

“It was built on theft.”

Adrian's voice became quiet.

“What about the people who have nothing to do with it?”

Alexander looked at him.

“That is why Jonathan never carried out his plan.”

Silence.

“He wanted justice,” Alexander continued.

“Not revenge.”

Elena looked at the document.

“What does it say?”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Read the final paragraph.”

She unfolded the paper.

Her eyes moved across the faded writing.

Then she stopped.

The rightful heirs shall not claim the inheritance unless they choose to restore the families harmed by the original theft.

Elena looked up.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the money cannot simply become yours.”

Alexander pointed at the document.

“The trust must be used to compensate the people harmed by Alexander Blackwood's actions.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

“That sounds like Jonathan.”

Elena looked at him.

“You knew him.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Alexander smiled sadly.

“You knew him without knowing his name.”

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Jonathan watched over you.”

Adrian froze.

“Where?”

“From a distance.”

“You're lying.”

“He saw you graduate.”

Adrian's face changed.

“He was alive?”

“Until the end.”

Amelia covered her mouth.

“Where did he die?”

Alexander looked away.

“Not where you think.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Tell us.”

“He died protecting the location of the final archive.”

Catherine whispered:

“The chapel.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone stared at him.

“The chapel was a decoy.”

Richard's face went pale.

“Then where is the real archive?”

Alexander looked directly at Elena.

“You already have it.”

She looked down at the document.

“What?”

“The archive is not a room.”

He pointed to the paper.

“It is the inheritance record itself.”

Elena's heart raced.

Alexander continued.

“Everything Alexander Blackwood did is recorded there.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then why hasn't anyone exposed him?”

“Because the record is incomplete.”

Catherine frowned.

“What is missing?”

Alexander's expression changed.

“One final signature.”

Elena looked at the bottom of the document.

There was an empty space.

Beside it were the words:

SECOND HEIR — ELENA ROSE VALE.

Elena stared.

“My signature?”

Alexander nodded.

“You must sign.”

Adrian immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Alexander looked at him.

“If she doesn't, the evidence remains sealed.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“If I sign, we expose everything.”

“And put yourself at risk.”

“I've been at risk my whole life.”

She picked up the pen lying beside the document.

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot sounded somewhere outside.

Everyone froze.

Alexander's expression changed.

“That wasn't my people.”

Adrian grabbed Elena's hand.

“Who's here?”

Alexander looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Alexander Blackwood.”

The man everyone believed was dead had finally come for his heirs.
