Nobody moved.

Jonathan Vale stood between Alexander's men, looking older than the man in the photographs but unmistakably alive.

Elena's breath caught.

For years, she had searched for answers about the father she had never known. Now he was standing only a few metres away.

“Jonathan?” she whispered.

His eyes found hers.

“Elena.”

One word was enough to bring tears to her eyes.

She took a step forward, but Adrian gently held her arm.

“Wait. We don't know what Alexander wants.”

Jonathan looked at Adrian.

“You've grown into a man I barely recognise.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You know who my father is?”

Jonathan didn't answer immediately.

Alexander gave a quiet laugh.

“Isn't this touching? The family finally reunited.”

Victoria turned towards him.

“You said you would let him go.”

Alexander looked at her coldly.

“I said many things, Victoria. You should have learned by now not to believe all of them.”

Richard moved closer to Jonathan.

“Let him go.”

One of Alexander's men tightened his grip on Jonathan's arm.

Alexander raised a hand.

“Not so quickly. We still have unfinished business.”

---

Elena stepped forward.

“You've kept him hidden all these years. Why?”

Alexander looked at her.

“Because Jonathan made a decision that threatened everything I had built.”

“What decision?”

Jonathan answered before Alexander could.

“I refused to hand over the inheritance.”

Alexander's expression darkened.

“You refused to obey the agreement.”

“I refused to let you decide who deserved their own birthright.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“Then why did you disappear?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Because I discovered that the original declaration had been altered. The names of the heirs were changed, and the guardian's authority was transferred without my permission.”

Evelyn's words returned to Elena's mind.

The guardian's seal.

She opened the silver box and held up the ring.

Jonathan's eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?”

“Grandmother Evelyn kept it.”

Jonathan closed his eyes briefly.

“She kept her promise.”

Alexander immediately stepped forward.

“Give me that ring.”

Elena held it closer to herself.

“No.”

Alexander's voice became sharper.

“You have no idea what you're holding.”

“Then explain it.”

Jonathan looked directly at Elena.

“Your grandfather's entire plan depends on keeping the original declaration hidden. That ring can reveal where it is stored.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then why hasn't he taken it from Evelyn?”

“Because the seal responds to the person Jonathan appointed as its guardian.”

Samuel looked at Elena.

“You mean Elena?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.”

Alexander's expression changed.

---

Richard suddenly moved towards Alexander.

“You've used me long enough.”

Alexander looked at him.

“Have I?”

“You told me Jonathan was dead. You told me my entire life depended on protecting the family name. You made me believe I was doing something honourable.”

Richard's voice trembled.

“Was any of it true?”

Alexander studied him for a moment.

“Some of it.”

Richard shook his head.

“That's not an answer.”

Jonathan looked at Richard with sadness.

“You were never supposed to carry this burden.”

Richard turned towards him.

“Then why did you leave me with it?”

“Because I wanted to keep you alive.”

“By allowing me to believe you were my father?”

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

“I was trying to protect you from the man who knew your real father's identity.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Enough. We're talking about my father now.”

Victoria looked at Jonathan.

“Tell him.”

Jonathan's face became serious.

“Adrian, your biological father is not Richard.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“I already know that.”

“And he is not Alexander either.”

Alexander's expression remained unreadable.

Jonathan continued.

“Your father was the man who helped me uncover the first altered declaration. He was supposed to protect the heirs, but he made a different choice.”

“Who?” Adrian demanded.

Jonathan looked towards Alexander.

“Your father is Charles Vale.”

Silence.

Samuel stared at Jonathan.

“Charles? My grandfather's brother?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Charles Vale was the man who helped Alexander hide the truth. He was also the man who arranged for Adrian to be raised as a Blackwood.”

Adrian looked stunned.

“So I was never Alexander's biological grandson?”

“No. But Alexander knew the truth.”

Alexander finally spoke.

“I raised you. I gave you my name. I made you heir to everything I owned.”

Adrian turned towards him.

“You made me believe I belonged to a family that wasn't mine.”

“I gave you a future.”

“You gave me a lie.”

---

Victoria moved closer to Richard.

“There's something else you need to know.”

Richard looked at her.

“What?”

“Your connection to Jonathan was never about blood. You were entrusted with the declaration because you were the only person Alexander believed he could control.”

Richard frowned.

“Why me?”

Jonathan answered.

“Because you were the child I rescued after Charles betrayed your mother.”

Richard went still.

“My mother?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Your mother was Amelia's closest friend. She knew Charles had another family, and she threatened to expose him. After she disappeared, I took responsibility for you.”

Richard's eyes filled with confusion.

“So Charles is Adrian's father, but he also has something to do with my birth?”

“Yes,” Jonathan replied. “But your stories are not the same. The original records will explain everything.”

Before anyone could speak again, Alexander reached for the document in Adrian's hand.

Adrian pulled it away.

“Don't touch it.”

Alexander's patience finally broke.

“You are all making a terrible mistake.”

Jonathan stepped forward.

“No, Alexander. The mistake was believing you could bury the truth forever.”

---

A phone vibrated inside Elena's handbag.

She looked down.

An unknown number.

The message contained a photograph of Lily sleeping peacefully in her room.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Beneath it were six words:

THE CHILD IS SAFE. FOR NOW.

She immediately called Margaret.

No answer.

She tried again.

Still nothing.

“What's wrong?” Adrian asked.

Elena showed him the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“Where is Lily?”

“I don't know. Mum was supposed to be with her.”

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“Did you do this?”

Alexander appeared genuinely surprised.

“I didn't send that message.”

Jonathan's face darkened.

“Then we're dealing with someone else.”

Samuel checked his phone.

“I'm calling the residence.”

Elena could barely breathe.

Then another message arrived.

This time, it contained a short video.

A child's familiar voice spoke from somewhere off-camera.

“Mummy?”

Elena covered her mouth.

It was Lily.

The video ended.

A final message appeared:

BRING THE ORIGINAL DECLARATION TO THE VALE ESTATE BEFORE MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE.

Adrian took Elena's phone.

“No. You're not going anywhere alone.”

Elena looked at him, her eyes filled with fear.

“That's our daughter.”

Jonathan turned towards the warehouse entrance.

“Then we have very little time.”

He looked at Alexander.

“Tell me where the original declaration is.”

Alexander slowly smiled.

“You still don't understand, Jonathan.”

He pointed towards Elena's silver box.

“The declaration isn't hidden anymore.”

Everyone looked at the ring.

Alexander's voice dropped.

“It's been inside that seal all along.”

Victoria Blackwood told me it was an acknowledgement of the original agreement. She said the trustees needed my signature before they could preserve the family's records.”Robert looked furious.“And you trusted her?”“She was my daughter-in-law. I had no reason to believe she would use my signature against me.”Adrian picked up the photograph.“Can we prove the document was altered?”Jonathan nodded.“Yes.
