LOGINElena stared at the silver ring in her hand.
“The declaration is inside this?”
Alexander nodded.
“Jonathan was clever enough to hide it where nobody would think to look.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Don't believe him. The ring contains the location of the declaration, not the document itself.”
Alexander laughed.
“Still protecting your secrets, Jonathan?”
“I'm protecting the people you keep trying to destroy.”
Adrian took Elena's hand.
“We need to find Lily first. Whatever is inside that ring can wait.”
Alexander shook his head.
“You don't have much time. Whoever sent that message knows about the declaration. If you hand it over, your daughter will be returned safely.”
Elena turned towards him.
“You expect me to trust you after everything you've done?”
“No,” Alexander replied. “I expect you to understand that you have no other choice.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“She has a choice. And she isn't handing you anything.”
Samuel examined the ring.
“Perhaps there's another way to find the document.”
Jonathan nodded.
“There is. But we need the original guardian's record.”
“Where is it?” Elena asked.
Jonathan looked towards Richard.
“He has it.”
Everyone turned.
Richard frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“Your mother gave it to you before she disappeared. You were too young to understand what it meant.”
Richard shook his head.
“I don't have anything like that.”
Jonathan studied him.
“Look inside the old family photograph you carried for years. The one of you and your mother.”
Richard's expression changed.
He reached into his jacket and removed a small, worn photograph.
He had kept it for decades.
Turning it over, he noticed a thin line along the edge. He carefully opened the backing.
A tiny folded paper slipped out.
Samuel took it.
There were three lines written in faded ink:
THE FIRST NAME OPENS THE GATE.
THE SECOND NAME REVEALS THE TRUTH.
THE THIRD NAME DECIDES THE FUTURE.
Beneath the message were three initials.
A.B.
E.B.
And a third set of initials that had been deliberately scratched out.
Elena looked at Jonathan.
“Who are they?”
Jonathan pointed to the first.
“Alexander Blackwood.”
Then the second.
“Evelyn Bennett.”
He paused before looking at the final initials.
“The third belongs to the person who was supposed to inherit the guardian's authority.”
Adrian frowned.
“Can you tell us who it is?”
Jonathan shook his head.
“Not until we recover the original declaration.”
---
Samuel placed the paper beside the silver ring.
He noticed a small indentation inside the ring's band.
“There's something here.”
Elena handed it to him.
Samuel examined the inscription.
“It's a date.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Which date?”
“November seventeenth, twenty-one years ago.”
Margaret's face immediately changed.
Elena noticed.
“Mum?”
Margaret looked at the date again.
“That was the day I left the Bennett residence with you.”
Elena's heart began to race.
“Why would Jonathan connect the ring to that day?”
Jonathan answered quietly.
“Because that was the day Alexander discovered you were still alive.”
Alexander said nothing.
Elena turned towards him.
“You knew where I was?”
“I knew you existed,” he replied. “I didn't know where your mother had taken you.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“You searched for us.”
Alexander looked at her.
“I was searching for the declaration.”
Evelyn had been right. Alexander's interest in Elena had never been about family affection.
It had always been about control.
---
Adrian checked his phone.
“We're wasting time. We need to locate Lily.”
Samuel nodded.
“I've contacted the residence. Margaret, can you confirm who was supposed to be watching her?”
Margaret shook her head.
“I left her with someone I trusted.”
“Who?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Lydia.”
Elena immediately called her sister.
The phone rang several times before Lydia answered.
“Hello?”
“Lydia, where's Lily?”
There was a brief silence.
“She's with me.”
Elena closed her eyes in relief.
“Why didn't you answer earlier?”
“My phone was switched off. What's happening?”
“Did anyone come looking for her?”
Lydia paused.
“Yes.”
Elena's heart dropped again.
“Who?”
“A woman came here claiming she was sent by Daniel. She knew Lily's name and said she had important documents for you.”
Adrian moved closer to the phone.
“Did you let her take Lily?”
“No. I refused. But she left something behind.”
“What?”
“A small envelope. It has your name on it.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“Don't open it. Stay where you are. We're coming.”
Lydia agreed.
Elena ended the call and looked at Adrian.
“Lily is safe with Lydia. We need to go.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Then you should leave the ring.”
Adrian gave him a cold look.
“Keep dreaming.”
---
They left the warehouse with Jonathan and Richard.
Alexander remained behind, but his expression suggested he was already planning his next move.
During the journey, Elena held the ring tightly.
Adrian glanced at her.
“You're quiet.”
“I'm trying to understand why everyone has made decisions about my life without telling me.”
He nodded.
“You deserve answers.”
“What if the declaration says something that changes everything?”
“Then we'll face it together.”
Elena looked at him.
“And if it puts Lily in danger?”
Adrian's expression softened.
“Nothing is more important than our daughter. Not the inheritance. Not the Blackwood name. Nothing.”
For the first time that evening, Elena felt some of the fear leave her chest.
---
When they arrived at Lydia's apartment, she opened the door immediately.
Elena hurried inside.
Lily ran towards her.
“Mummy!”
Elena knelt and held her daughter close.
“Are you alright?”
Lily nodded.
“I was waiting for you.”
Adrian joined them and gently kissed Lily's forehead.
“Everything is alright now.”
Lydia stood nearby, holding a cream-coloured envelope.
“This is what the woman left.”
Elena took it.
Her name was written across the front in familiar handwriting.
She recognised it immediately.
Daniel's.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph of a young woman holding a baby.
On the back, Daniel had written:
ELENA, THE THIRD HEIR WAS NEVER THE PERSON YOU WERE TOLD TO FIND.
Beneath the sentence was another line:
IT WAS THE PERSON WHO WAS BORN TO REPLACE THE FIRST HEIR.
Samuel looked at Jonathan.
“Who was born to replace the first heir?”
Jonathan's face became pale.
Richard slowly stepped backwards.
Adrian took the photograph from Elena.
He studied the baby carefully.
Then he looked at Jonathan.
“Tell me this isn't true.”
Jonathan lowered his head.
“What is it?” Elena asked.
Adrian turned the photograph towards her.
The young woman holding the baby was Amelia Vale.
And the baby in her arms was Adrian.
But someone had written a name beneath the photograph.
Not Adrian's.
Not Blackwood.
It read:
THE ORIGINAL HEIR — ADRIAN VALE.
Elena looked at Jonathan in disbelief.
“Why was his name changed?”
Jonathan's answer came quietly.
“Because Adrian was never supposed to inherit the Blackwood empire.”
He looked towards Adrian.
“He was supposed to inherit something much more important.”
Before anyone could ask another question, Richard's phone rang.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
“Richard, it's Evelyn.”
Richard immediately put the call on speaker.
Her voice sounded frightened.
“Listen carefully. Alexander has found the original declaration.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Where?”
Evelyn paused.
Then she delivered the words that changed everything.
“Inside the Blackwood chapel. And he's already opened it.”
The call ended.
Adrian stared at the message.DON'T TRUST DANIEL. HE KNOWS WHO THE CHILD IS BECAUSE HE HELPED HIDE HIM.Daniel watched him.“What's wrong?”Adrian turned the phone around.“Richard says you helped hide the fourth child.”Daniel's expression barely changed.“Richard doesn't know what he's talking about.”“Then why is he warning me about you?”“Because he wants to turn you against me.”Elena stepped forward.“Enough. We need the truth, not another argument.”Daniel looked at her.“I've spent years protecting you.”“By lying to me?”“By keeping you alive.”The words silenced her.Margaret moved closer to Daniel.“You knew Isabella?”Daniel nodded.“She was my wife's sister.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”“Because Isabella made me promise never to reveal what happened to her child.”Margaret's eyes filled.“You let me believe she disappeared without explanation.”“She had to.”“Why?”Daniel opened his mouth, but Adrian's phone rang again.Richard.This time Adrian answered and put the ca
Margaret stared at Evelyn.“That's not true.”Evelyn didn't look away.“You know exactly who I'm talking about.”“No, I don't.”“Margaret, please. We've hidden enough.”Margaret shook her head.“I have spent years trying to understand what happened in that hospital. I raised Elena believing she was my daughter. I lost Matthew. I watched Daniel build a life around secrets. But I have never knowingly hidden another child.”Elena stepped closer.“Grandma, who is the fourth child?”Evelyn looked at her.“Someone who grew up believing they had no connection to the Vale family.”“Then tell us their name.”“I can't.”Charles gave a frustrated laugh.“Of course you can't. You appear with another mystery, make accusations, and expect everyone to believe you.”Evelyn turned toward him.“You know more than you're admitting.”“And you know less than you pretend.”Jonathan stepped between them.“Enough. We need to establish what happened before another person gets hurt by these lies.”Adrian picke
Elena couldn't move.Evelyn stood at the entrance, holding the photograph against her chest. For years, the family had searched for her. Some believed she was dead. Others believed she had abandoned them. But she was standing there.Alive.And apparently, carrying another secret.“What do you mean?” Elena finally asked. “What other child did you take?”Evelyn looked around the room.“Before I answer, I need everyone to understand something. The hospital records were not changed to protect one child. They were changed to protect several.”Catherine stepped forward.“You took my daughter.”“I saved your daughter.”“You separated me from her!”Evelyn lowered her eyes.“I know.”Catherine's voice broke.“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”“I do. And I have regretted it every day.”Charles moved closer.“You don't get to return after all these years and pretend you were protecting everyone.”Evelyn looked at him.“You're the last person who should question my decisions.”Charles's
Jonathan didn't move. The message remained on Adrian's phone, its words hanging over the room like a threat.ASK JONATHAN WHO HE BURIED TWENTY YEARS AGO.Elena stared at him.“Who did you bury?”Jonathan looked away.“Someone who should have stayed dead.”Catherine's eyes widened.“Jonathan!”He raised a hand.“Not here.”Charles stepped forward.“No. We're done hiding things. Tell us who was buried.”Jonathan's jaw tightened.“Michael Hayes.”Margaret gasped.Catherine staggered backward.“No,” she whispered. “Michael was alive when I was told he died.”Jonathan nodded.“I know.”Elena looked between them.“Then whose funeral did you attend?”Jonathan took a slow breath.“His brother's.”Adrian frowned.“Margaret just said the man she married wasn't Michael. Are you saying she married his brother?”Jonathan nodded.“Yes.”Margaret shook her head.“That's not what he told me.”“What did he tell you?” Elena asked.Margaret looked confused.“He introduced himself as Michael. He had Mich
The room fell silent.Elena stared at Margaret.“Michael Hayes was your husband?”Margaret nodded slowly.“Before I married Daniel, yes.”Catherine took a step forward.“That isn't possible.”Margaret turned toward her.“I wish it weren't.”“You told me Michael died before I discovered I was pregnant.”“I know what you were told.”Catherine's eyes filled with anger.“Then explain why you were married to him.”Margaret looked down at the photograph in Elena's hands.“Because someone needed to give him a reason to disappear.”Jonathan's expression hardened.“Margaret, be careful.”She ignored him.“Michael was already in danger when I met him. He had discovered something about the original inheritance agreement. Something that could have destroyed the Vale family.”Charles folded his arms.“And you expect us to believe you married him to protect him?”“No,” Margaret replied. “I married him because he asked me to.”Catherine shook her head.“Why would he ask you?”“Because he needed a le
Catherine read the message again.HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Then she looked at Jonathan.“Who was my daughter's father?”Jonathan's expression became guarded.“I thought Charles was.”“So did I,” Catherine replied. “But Evelyn wouldn't have written that unless she knew something.”Adrian examined the photograph.“Could the message be referring to another man?”Richard shook his head.“The photograph was taken years after the child was born. Whoever wrote this wanted Catherine to understand that the truth had been hidden deliberately.”Samuel looked towards Catherine.“Did you have another relationship before Charles?”Catherine hesitated.“There was someone. But I was told he died before I discovered I was pregnant.”Jonathan stepped closer.“Who was he?”Catherine looked at him.“His name was Michael.”The name meant nothing to Elena. But Daniel, who had remained silent near the doorway, suddenly raised his head.“Michael what?”Catheri
