Elena stared at her phone.

Her grandmother was alive.

For twenty-one years, she had believed that her family history began and ended with Daniel and Margaret. Now she was discovering that another generation had been erased from her life.

“Did you hear what he said?” she asked.

Adrian nodded.

“Your grandmother is alive.”

Elena turned towards Margaret.

“Did you know?”

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped backwards.

“You knew my grandmother was alive, and you never told me?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“That's what everyone says! Everyone claims they're protecting me, but nobody thinks I deserve the truth.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“I know I have no excuse. But your grandmother's disappearance was connected to Jonathan's final agreement. If Alexander discovered she was alive, he would have used her to control the family.”

Adrian interrupted.

“What's her name?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Evelyn Rose Bennett.”

Elena repeated the name quietly.

“Evelyn.”

“She was Jonathan's closest confidante,” Margaret continued. “She knew where he hid the original inheritance declaration.”

Samuel suddenly looked interested.

“Evelyn Bennett?”

Margaret nodded.

“You know her?”

Samuel placed his hands on the table.

“I heard Jonathan mention her several times. He said she was the only person who could challenge Alexander without needing the inheritance.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then why did she disappear?”

Margaret looked towards the window.

“Because she discovered something about Alexander that nobody else knew.”

---

They decided to search Daniel's belongings for anything that could reveal Evelyn's location.

Lydia found an old notebook inside his travel bag.

Most of its pages contained names, dates and addresses. Several entries had been crossed out.

One page caught Elena's attention.

EVELYN BENNETT — ST. MARTHA'S RESIDENCE.

Beneath the address was a handwritten instruction:

Do not approach until the guardian's seal is recovered.

Elena looked at Margaret.

“What guardian's seal?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Samuel examined the notebook.

“The seal may be connected to Jonathan's final declaration.”

Adrian closed the notebook.

“Then we're going to St. Martha's Residence.”

Victoria immediately objected.

“You cannot simply walk into a place connected to this family without knowing who is watching.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Do you have a better suggestion?”

Victoria remained silent.

Elena picked up the notebook.

“I'm going.”

Adrian nodded.

“Then we go together.”

---

St. Martha's Residence was an old private care home located outside the city.

When they arrived, the receptionist initially refused to provide information about Evelyn.

Elena showed her a photograph of Margaret and Evelyn standing together many years earlier.

The receptionist studied it.

“You're related to Mrs. Bennett?”

Elena nodded.

“She's my grandmother.”

The woman looked surprised.

“She's been waiting for someone from her family for a very long time.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“Can I see her?”

The receptionist made a phone call before allowing them inside.

They were led through a quiet corridor to a room at the end.

An elderly woman sat beside the window, reading a book.

Her silver hair rested neatly around her shoulders.

When she looked up, her eyes settled on Elena.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Evelyn slowly stood.

“Margaret?”

Margaret stepped forward.

“Mum.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“You finally came back.”

Margaret approached her mother.

“I brought someone.”

Evelyn turned.

Elena stood in the doorway.

The elderly woman studied her face carefully.

Then she whispered:

“Jonathan's eyes.”

Elena felt her throat tighten.

“I'm Elena.”

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“I know, my child.”

---

They sat together for nearly an hour.

Evelyn listened as Elena explained everything that had happened since discovering the hidden family records.

When Elena finished, Evelyn remained silent.

Finally, she looked towards Samuel.

“So Jonathan's firstborn has returned.”

Samuel nodded.

“And the other heirs have been found.”

Evelyn gave a sad smile.

“Then Alexander has lost control of the story.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Can you tell us who the third heir is?”

Evelyn's expression became serious.

“The third heir is not simply someone who carries Jonathan's blood. Jonathan chose that person because they had the power to protect the family from Alexander.”

“Who?” Elena asked.

Evelyn looked at Margaret.

“Did you tell her about the guardian's seal?”

Margaret shook her head.

Evelyn reached towards a small drawer beside her bed.

She removed an old silver box.

Inside was a ring bearing the same crown symbol they had seen on Daniel and the mysterious men following them.

Adrian examined it.

“Where did you get this?”

“Jonathan gave it to me before he disappeared.”

Samuel stepped closer.

“That's the guardian's seal.”

Evelyn nodded.

“It proves who has authority to reveal the final name in the original agreement.”

Elena looked at the ring.

“Then tell us who Jonathan chose.”

Evelyn closed the box.

“Not yet.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the person who carries the third heir's authority must first make a choice. Jonathan wanted to ensure that nobody accepted the position simply because of money or power.”

Elena shook her head.

“We've suffered enough. What choice?”

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“The third heir must decide whether to restore the Blackwood empire or destroy the system that allowed Alexander to steal it.”

Silence followed.

Then Evelyn turned towards Adrian.

“Your grandfather has spent years searching for this ring. He knows what it can reveal.”

Adrian looked at the silver box.

“Then we need to keep it safe.”

Evelyn nodded.

“But there's something else.”

She opened the box again and removed a small folded paper hidden beneath the ring.

It contained an address.

Samuel recognised it immediately.

“The old Blackwood cemetery.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Jonathan left something there. Something that will explain why Alexander has been hiding the third heir.”

Elena took the paper.

“Is Jonathan buried there?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“No, my child. Jonathan was never buried.”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Your family has been searching for a dead man for years.”

She paused.

“Jonathan Vale is alive.”

---

At that exact moment, Evelyn's room phone rang.

Nobody moved.

The receptionist's voice came through.

“Mrs. Bennett, there's a visitor asking for you.”

Evelyn's face immediately changed.

“Who?”

The receptionist hesitated.

“He says his name is Alexander Blackwood.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Lock the door.”

But Evelyn shook her head.

“No. Let him come.”

Elena stared at her.

“Grandmother, are you sure?”

Evelyn nodded.

“I have waited thirty years to look that man in the eyes.”

The door handle slowly turned.

A familiar voice came from the hallway.

“Evelyn, it's time we finished what Jonathan started.”

Evelyn looked at Elena.

“Whatever happens, do not give him the ring.”

The door opened.

And Alexander Blackwood entered the room.

Victoria Blackwood told me it was an acknowledgement of the original agreement.
