The child they came to claim

Elena stared at the computer screen.

LILY ROSE BENNETT.

Her daughter's name was displayed beneath the words that had threatened to destroy everything.

Adrian immediately moved in front of her.

“No one is taking Lily.”

Alexander's voice came through the speakers.

“You still don't understand, Adrian. Lily belongs to a family whose history began long before you were born.”

“She is my daughter,” Elena replied. “Nothing you say will change that.”

Alexander gave a quiet laugh.

“Then perhaps you should ask why Daniel spent so many years hiding her from me.”

Elena's expression changed.

“Daniel has never hidden Lily from anyone.”

“Are you certain?”

The screen went black.

A moment later, a new document appeared.

It was a photograph of an old hospital record.

The heading contained Lily's date of birth, but the mother's name had been deliberately covered.

Elena stepped closer.

“That isn't her original hospital record.”

Adrian looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“I kept every document from the day Lily was born. This one has details that don't match.”

Alexander's voice returned.

“Your father knew the truth. He changed the records to protect the child.”

Adrian reached for the computer and disconnected the speakers.

“We're not listening to another word.”

They left the study and returned to the sitting room.

Victoria was waiting for them.

“What happened?”

Adrian showed her the photograph.

Victoria's face changed immediately.

“Where did you find this?”

“Alexander sent it to us.”

She examined the record carefully.

“This is not the original document.”

Elena looked at her.

“You recognise it?”

Victoria nodded.

“I saw a similar document years ago. Alexander wanted to establish a connection between Lily and the original Vale inheritance.”

“Why would he do that?”

“Because he believed Lily could become the easiest way to control the remaining heirs.”

Elena felt anger rising inside her.

“She is a child. How could he involve her in something like this?”

Victoria lowered the document.

“Because he has never understood the difference between family and power.”

Adrian looked towards his mother.

“You said Richard was Jonathan's son. Now Alexander claims Lily is the third heir. Which part of this family history is actually true?”

Victoria remained silent.

Then she said something unexpected.

“There's a problem with the family register you found.”

“What problem?” Adrian asked.

“The signatures are genuine, but the entries were altered.”

Adrian frowned.

“Are you saying the register is false?”

“I'm saying someone changed the relationships between the people listed.”

Meanwhile, Daniel sat in the locked room, studying the small photograph hidden beneath the table.

He had managed to retrieve it before his captors searched his belongings.

It showed a younger Victoria holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Richard.

On the back was a handwritten message:

THE CHILD MUST NEVER BE USED AS PAYMENT FOR THE FAMILY'S SINS.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He remembered Jonathan's final instruction.

Protect the children. Keep the original records separate. Never allow Alexander to decide their futures.

A noise came from outside.

The door opened.

Samuel entered.

“It's time.”

Daniel stood immediately.

“Where is Richard?”

“Waiting outside.”

“Have you found the original register?”

Samuel nodded.

“But there's something you need to know.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“Alexander has told Adrian that Lily is the third heir.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Then Alexander has started the final part of his plan.”

Samuel frowned.

“Is Lily really connected to the inheritance?”

Daniel looked down at the photograph.

“She is connected to Jonathan's promise. That doesn't mean she belongs to Alexander.”

Back at the mansion, Adrian received another call.

Richard.

He answered immediately.

“Father, where are you?”

“Listen carefully. You found the register, didn't you?”

“Yes. But Victoria says it was altered.”

Richard sighed.

“She is right.”

Adrian's expression tightened.

“Then tell me the truth. Are you Jonathan's son?”

There was a long silence.

“No.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What?”

“Jonathan protected me when I was young. He gave me a place in his family records, but he was not my biological father.”

“Why did everyone say he was?”

“Because Alexander needed someone to carry the third heir's authority. He used my adoption to create a false connection.”

Adrian struggled to understand.

“Then who is my biological father?”

Richard's voice became quieter.

“That is something you must discover in the original records. But I can tell you this: Jonathan was never your father.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

The implications were enormous.

The family records had connected people who were never meant to share the same bloodline.

“Where is the original register?” Adrian asked.

“Samuel has it. He will bring it to you.”

The call ended.

A few minutes later, someone knocked at the front door.

Lydia opened it.

Samuel stood outside, holding a leather folder.

“I believe this belongs to your family.”

Adrian approached him.

“What's inside?”

“The original birth records and Jonathan's final declaration.”

He placed the folder on the table.

Elena opened it.

There were several documents, including an original hospital record bearing her daughter's name.

She examined it carefully.

The mother's name was correct.

Her own.

The father's name was correct too.

Adrian's.

Lily was their daughter. Nothing in the original record suggested otherwise.

But another page contained a handwritten statement.

Lily Rose Bennett shall remain protected from all inheritance disputes. Her name must never be used to claim authority over the Blackwood or Vale families.

Elena released a breath.

“So Alexander's document was deliberately altered.”

Samuel nodded.

“He wanted you frightened enough to surrender the original records.”

Adrian turned another page.

A final statement was attached.

It read:

The third heir shall not be identified through blood alone. The person must be named by the original guardian, whose identity remains sealed until the final declaration.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Jonathan's guardian.”

Samuel looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Who was it?”

Samuel slowly removed another photograph from the folder.

It showed Jonathan standing beside an elderly man.

Elena recognised him immediately.

Alexander Blackwood.

But the photograph was different from the others.

Jonathan was handing Alexander a sealed envelope.

On the back, Jonathan had written:

YOU WILL KNOW THE THIRD HEIR WHEN THE CHILD RETURNS HOME.

Adrian looked at Samuel.

“Where is the child?”

Samuel's expression darkened.

“That's the problem. The child never disappeared.”

He pointed towards the photograph.

“Alexander has known where the third heir is for years.”

Elena's phone suddenly rang.

It was Daniel.

She answered immediately.

“Dad!”

His voice sounded urgent.

“Elena, listen to me. Don't let Alexander near Lily.”

“Where are you?”

“I'm coming to you. But there's something I need to tell you first.”

“What?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Alexander isn't the only person who knows the third heir's identity.”

A loud sound interrupted him.

Then his voice returned, barely audible.

“Your grandmother is alive.”

The call disconnected.

Elena stared at her phone.

Her grandmother?

She had never known anything about her.

Before she could ask another question, Samuel spoke.

“Then we have to find her before Alexander does.”
